Abstract

Abstract

Zakat functions as a crucial instrument for achieving developmental goals, including the improvement of individual welfare. This study aims to analyse the effect of zakat, as measured by the National Zakat Index (NZI), on poverty alleviation in Indonesia during the Covid-19 pandemic. This research utilizes panel data from 32 Indonesia provinces covering the period from 2020 to 2022, employing the Fixed Effect Model (FEM) analysis method. The current analysis has not found a statistically significant effect of the National Zakat Index on the decrease of poverty rates in Indonesia. A major element to the enduring poverty in Indonesia is the inadequate collection of national zakat money. The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a significant rise in the number of individuals living in poverty, thereby decreasing zakat payment collections. The NZI is an extensive index that encompasses both macro and micro aspects. The NZI is expected to function as an objective metric for assessing the efficacy of zakat administration in Indonesia. The establishment of efficient zakat management is anticipated to enhance poverty reduction efforts. The policy consequence derived from the findings is to enhance zakat management organizations. This study contributes to the relationship between zakat and poverty reduction from a macro-level perspective, unlike earlier research that focuses on micro-level data.

Abstract

Sharia fintech has become a strategic instrument in the downstream of the Indonesian economy, especially in distributing financing to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that have been experiencing limited access to formal capital. This article aims to analyze the role of sharia authorities, namely the National Sharia Council-Indonesian Ulema Council (DSN-MUI) and the Sharia Supervisory Council (DPS), in facilitating and supervising economic downstream through sharia fintech products using a qualitative approach with a literature study method on sharia economic literature, Financial Services Authority (OJK) regulations, DSN-MUI fatwas, and empirical research for the 2020-2025 period on fintech sharia and MSME financing. The results of the study show that DSN-MUI plays a role as a normative framework through Fatwa No. 117/DSN-MUI/II/2018 concerning Information Technology-Based Financing Services Based on Sharia Principles which is the operational basis of sharia fintech, while DPS functions as a supervisor, advisor, and reviewer which ensures sharia compliance at the operational level of the platform (The Role of DPS, 2022; Implementation of DSN-MUI Fatwa, 2024). Sharia fintech has been proven to expand financial inclusion and increase access to MSME financing through mudharabah, musyarakah, and halal crowdfunding contracts that are effective in improving economic justice, with financing growth of 35% for the 2020-2023 period and more than 50% of beneficiaries coming from MSMEs (Financial Services Authority, 2023; Munawar, 2025). The economic downstream process is facilitated through a feasibility assessment based on digital data, quick access without physical collateral, and Islamic financial literacy assistance that increases the managerial capacity of business actors (The Role of Sharia Fintech MSMEs, 2024; MSME Financial Transformation, 2025). However, implementation faces challenges in the form of limited DPS capacity that understands technology, digital literacy gap for MSME actors, and the need for regulatory harmonization between the OJK, DSN-MUI, and the Ministry of Cooperatives (The Role of DPS Compliance, 2025). This article concludes that strengthening sharia authorities requires three integrative strategies: improving the competence of DPS through financial technology training and sharia maqashid, the development of RegTech and SupTech for automated compliance audits, and strengthening collaboration between DSN-MUI, OJK, and industry players to ensure fintech Sharia plays an optimal role in the downstream of an inclusive, just, and sustainable economy according to the principle of maslahah. Abstract

This study examines the ethical dilemmas experienced by Muslim consumers in using Buy-Now-Pay-Later (BNPL) services in Indonesia. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), this study explores how Muslim consumers perceive, interpret, and negotiate BNPL usage in relation to Islamic financial principles. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with fifteen Muslim BNPL users in Bengkulu, Indonesia. The findings reveal four main themes: ethical-religious awareness, rationalization of BNPL usage, the role of financial and Islamic financial literacy, and regulatory-institutional uncertainty. Participants generally recognized potential Sharia concerns, particularly regarding riba, late-payment penalties, and unclear contractual terms. However, many continued to use BNPL because of financial convenience, economic necessity, limited alternatives, and insufficient Islamic financial literacy. The study highlights that BNPL usage among Muslim consumers is not merely a financial practice but also a moral experience shaped by religious values, consumer vulnerability, and institutional guidance. These findings underline the need for transparent, responsible, and genuinely Sharia-compliant BNPL models supported by stronger consumer education and regulatory supervision.

Abstract

The global halal food industry has experienced rapid expansion, driven by growing Muslim populations and increasing consumer demand for certified halal products. Despite this growth, small-scale food producers continue to face significant challenges in implementing effective halal traceability systems within complex global supply chains. This study investigates the traceability challenges encountered by small-scale food producers in Indonesia, with broader implications for the global halal food sector. Employing a qualitative research design, data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews with fifteen small-scale halal food producers in Bengkulu Province, Indonesia. Thematic analysis was applied to identify key patterns and themes from the data. The findings reveal four major themes: (1) systemic traceability challenges related to documentation and supply chain visibility; (2) difficulties in accessing and maintaining halal certification; (3) limited adoption of digital technologies for traceability management; and (4) trust and integrity issues across the supply chain. This study concludes that targeted policy interventions, technology capacity-building programs, and streamlined certification processes are essential to support small-scale producers in achieving robust halal traceability. The findings contribute to the growing body of halal supply chain literature and offer practical implications for industry stakeholders and policymakers.

Abstract

Mosques hold transformative potential as centers of community economic development in Muslim-majority societies, yet the management of Ziswaf — comprising Zakat, Infaq, Sadaqah, and Waqf — in many mosque institutions remains constrained by manual recording systems, limited transparency, and weak accountability mechanisms. This community service program, conducted in 2025 across two cross-national locations — Songkhla, Southern Thailand, and Kedah, Malaysia — aimed to facilitate the digital transformation of Ziswaf management practices in selected mosque institutions through structured training, system introduction, and ongoing mentoring. A total of 62 mosque administrators, committee members, and community leaders participated across both sites. The program introduced participants to accessible digital tools including spreadsheet-based financial recording systems, WhatsApp-based donor communication channels, and basic social media reporting practices. Post-program assessments demonstrated measurable improvements in administrative efficiency, collection transparency, and community trust in mosque financial management. Several participating mosques successfully transitioned from purely manual to hybrid digital recording systems by the program's conclusion. This article reports on the program methodology, outcomes, implementation challenges, and implications for the sustainability of mosque-based economic empowerment programs in transnational Muslim communities.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the performance of village officials in managing Village Fund Allocations (ADD) from an Islamic economic perspective. The performance of village officials is an important factor in achieving ADD management goals, namely improving community welfare and sustainable village development. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods, where data is obtained through interviews, observation and documentation. The research results show that the management of ADD by village officials has generally been carried out in accordance with the principles of accountability and transparency. However, there are several weaknesses, such as a lack of community participation and low understanding of village officials about the principles of Islamic economics, such as justice, efficiency and collective benefit. From an Islamic economic perspective, ADD management must be carried out by prioritizing the values of trust, justice and responsibility to realize community welfare. This research concludes that optimizing the performance of village officials in managing ADD requires increasing human resource capacity, active involvement of the community, and comprehensive application of Islamic economic principles. Recommendations are given to the village government and related parties to strengthen supervision and training regarding ADD management according to Islamic values.
