Abstract

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are becoming increasingly important in today's society as they drive innovation and shape the future of the global economy. However, there is a persistent gender gap in STEM education and careers, with women significantly underrepresented in these fields. This gender gap can be attributed to various factors, including societal stereotypes, a lack of role models, and inadequate support systems for girls and women interested in pursuing STEM careers. This study aims to understand why women tend to avoid STEM careers and how to encourage women to be more involved in STEM fields. This study uses qualitative methods with interview collection techniques. The results of the study show that there are several aspects for women to be involved in STEM (1) initial exposure to the STEM field, (2) providing positive role models for women, (3) creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment, and (4) working actively to eliminate gender bias and stereotypes. Encouraging girls and young women to pursue STEM fields is critical as it not only helps create a more diverse and inclusive workforce but also opens up opportunities for innovation and advancement. Studies have shown that exposing girls to STEM fields at an early age can significantly impact their interest and confidence. In addition, they have access to positive female role models. They are creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for girls in STEM fields. In conclusion, addressing the STEM gender gap and encouraging girls to pursue STEM careers is critical to creating a diverse and inclusive workforce, driving innovation and progress.

Abstract

The integration of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in higher education has gained increasing attention as a strategy to foster essential 21st-century competencies. In mathematics learning, the use of Virtual Reality (VR) offers immersive and interactive experiences that may enhance higher-order thinking skills. However, empirical evidence examining the impact of a STEAM-SDGs-based VR learning model on students’ critical thinking and creativity remains limited. This study aims to investigate the effect of a STEAM-SDGs-based VR mathematics learning model on students’ critical thinking and creativity. A quantitative research design was employed. The study collected data through structured questionnaires administered to 100 students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang. The proposed research model was analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) with SmartPLS version 3 to evaluate both measurement and structural models. The findings indicate that the STEAM-SDGs-based VR learning model has a significant positive effect on students' critical thinking and creativity. The immersive VR environment, combined with interdisciplinary STEAM integration and SDGs-oriented problem contexts, contributes to improved analytical reasoning, idea generation, and innovative problem-solving skills. This research provides empirical support for integrating STEAM, the SDGs, and Virtual Reality into mathematics education at the higher education level. The study contributes to the development of innovative, technology-enhanced learning models that promote critical thinking and creativity, offering practical implications for educators and policymakers seeking to strengthen 21st-century competencies in university settings.

Abstract

Social support is an essential protective factor against the risk of talent development failure, especially in the catastrophic situation. This study aimed to test the validity and reliability of social support instruments specifically for talented sports students in Malaysia. Content validity index (CVI), exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and internal consistency are the methods used to ensure that measurement instruments are appropriate for use in local contexts and cultures. A total of 268 form four talented sports students aged 16 years were selected by proportionate stratified random sampling in this study. The study found that the instrument had good content validity, with the items reaching the minimum level of CVI value and exceeding the recommended cut-off point of 0.78. Factor analysis found that the final measurement model has three factors, namely i) family support, ii) friends support, and iii) coach support, with factor loading ranging between 0.49 and 0.89. Correlation matrix was also measured through the KMO and Bartlett test of sphericity. All three factors had internal consistency values of 0.83 for coach support and 0.85 for family and friend support, which was defined good. Future research is warranted to explore the instrument with different samples and measurement in various scenarios.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of STEM integration on student performance in the Madrasah (school) Science Competition (KSM), focusing on how STEM-based learning enhances academic achievement. The growing importance of STEM education globally emphasizes its potential to improve students' scientific knowledge and critical thinking. Integrating STEM in Madrasah education, mainly through science competitions like the Madrasah Science Competition (KSM), challenges students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical, real-world contexts. Despite the increasing interest in STEM education, researchers have yet to fully understand its specific impact on student performance in KSM, particularly within the context of Islamic schools. Here, we examine how STEM integration affects student achievement in KSM. The research employs a qualitative approach, using thematic analysis to analyze open-ended questioning with students who participated in KSM. The results reveal that STEM integration on student achievement in KSM resulted in (a) scientific inquiry and problem-solving, hands-on experimentation, theoretical knowledge application, (b) use of technology and tools, and resource disparities, (c) increased engagement through STEM, and confidence in problem-solving, (d) limited access to resources, (e) collaborative learning in STEM projects, and team dynamics and support, (f) enhanced scientific understanding, and development of critical thinking skills, (g) improved KSM outcomes, and increased interest in science careers. The implications suggest incorporating STEM into Madrasah curricula can enhance academic achievement and foster critical thinking skills. Future research could explore the long-term impact of STEM integration on broader educational outcomes and investigate ways to scale STEM practices across Madrasah institutions.

Abstract

Media convergence has transformed communication patterns and intensified social media engagement among Generation Z (born 1997–2012). This group’s constant connectivity increases their vulnerability to psychological pressure, particularly the fear of missing out (FOMO). This study aims to analyze how TikTok, as a dominant product of media convergence, contributes to the emergence and intensification of FOMO among adolescents. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method, involving semi-structured interviews with 12 Generation Z participants and non-participant observation of TikTok usage patterns over a four-week period. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring behavioral and psychological indicators of FOMO. The findings show that TikTok’s algorithmic content flow, rapid trend cycles, and participatory culture significantly trigger FOMO, compelling individuals to frequently check updates, follow trends, and compare themselves with peers. Participants experiencing high FOMO also reported lower life satisfaction, increased anxiety, and difficulties maintaining emotional stability. These conditions were found to hinder aspects of adolescent development, particularly identity formation and autonomy. The study concludes that FOMO represents a critical psychosocial impact of media convergence and underscores the need for digital literacy and mental-health-oriented interventions to help Generation Z navigate online environments more healthily.

Abstract

Family food resilience remains a major challenge in urban areas with limited land availability, causing communities to rely heavily on imported food rather than optimizing household yards through urban farming. Limited technical knowledge further hinders the effective use of small spaces despite the economic and ecological benefits of urban farming. This study examines the role of urban farming in strengthening family food resilience by integrating Islamic values. Using a qualitative approach through a literature review of 24 scientific journals, the analysis was guided by Islamic principles and previous empirical findings. The results show that incorporating Islamic values into urban farming enhances fresh food availability, reduces household expenses, and promotes environmental awareness. These practices align with key Islamic concepts such as khalifah fil ard (stewardship), ishlah (improvement), and tawazun (balance). Overall, Islamic-based urban farming emerges as a promising strategy to promote sustainability, strengthen family food security, and support the welfare of urban communities.
