Abstract

As one of the demanding discourses of Indonesian Islam, Islam Nusantara has made a further round of Indonesian Muslim polarisation among the proponents on the one side and the opponents on another, let alone in the digital era nowadays. For the Muslim communities, new media are not only used for communication activities but also to assist the da'wa (proselytisation) and its contestation. This paper, thus, aims to portray activities of social media users, particularly Instagram, using the #IslamNusantara hashtag to convey their ideas. This paper seeks to explore the motives of how the Instagram users do involve in the contestation of #IslamNusantara and to what extent they publish their argument to support, criticise, or even refuse the concept of Islam Nusantara. The method used in this article is netnography, analysing a total of 344,000 hashtags #IslamNusantara on Instagram. Finally, this paper anticipates a yet-to-end online contestation among the Muslim communities within a new interest pool: #IslamNusantara.

Abstract

Research on Artificial Intelligence in journalism is rapidly expanding, but studies on adoption in Islamic higher education remain limited. In practice, students actively utilize various generative AI tools, but often without sufficient ethical understanding. This condition creates potential risks such as misinformation, cultural insensitivity, and weakened professional accountability. This study examines the integration of generative AI in the Islamic Communication and Broadcasting (KPI) program at UIN Ponorogo through a qualitative case study approach. The analysis using Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation theory alongside the framework of Islamic communication ethics, encompassing the principles of ṣidq (truthfulness), amānah (responsibility), maṣlaḥah (public benefit), ʿadl (justice), tabayyun (verification), wasatiyya (moderation), and tablīgh (ethical communication). Findings reveal distinct adoption patterns: students adopt AI rapidly with minimal ethical filtering, lecturers adopt selectively with oversight, while practitioners prioritize authenticity. These differences highlight gaps in digital ethics, institutional readiness, and curriculum design. The study proposes a conceptual framework to align AI adoption with Islamic communication ethics, thereby fostering more responsible journalism practices.

Abstract

The emergence of Islamic AI applications represents a pivotal transformation in the mediation of daʿwah. Yet, it raises pressing concerns about bias, epistemic validity, and the absence of recognized religious authority. This study examines ChatMu GPT and MuslimAI.ai, two prominent platforms with distinct theological orientations, to evaluate how they address religious questions framed within Indonesia's four indicators of religious moderation across the domains of message of da'wah, such asʿaqīdah (creed), ʿibādah (worship), and muʿāmalah (social ethics). Using qualitative content analysis and drawing on Algorithmic Bias Theory, six prompts were designed to test inclusivity, doctrinal balance, and ethical framing. Findings reveal that ChatMu GPT consistently grounds responses in Muhammadiyah doctrinal sources, producing structured but institutionally aligned guidance, while MuslimAI.ai prioritizes emotional inclusivity and accessibility at the expense of jurisprudential depth. Both exhibit limited transparency of sources and potential algorithmic bias. These results suggest that while Islamic AI can enhance accessibility to religious knowledge, its unsupervised use risks narrowing interpretive diversity. The study recommends hybrid AI models supervised by qualified ʿulamāʾ, trained on pluralistic datasets, and aligned with Islamic ethical principles of ṣidq (truthfulness), amānah (trustworthiness), and maṣlaḥah (public good) to preserve the integrity of digital daʿwah.
