Abstract

The people of Cireundeu Village are known as a community group that still maintains the tradition of ancestral heritage of consuming rasi (cassava rice) as a staple food since 1918. This consumption process imbues rasi with the meaning that it is part of their culture. This study employed a qualitative approach with a semiotic method in decoding the meaning of rasi among the people of Cireundeu indigenous village. The purpose of this study was to find out 1) what meaning is constructed from rasi as their staple food 2) and what identity is built among the Cireundeu indigenous people. The results of this study show that 1) rasi is a form of struggle for religious identity that has been discriminated against, namely the struggle for belief in Sunda Wiwitan as their religious identity and 2) rasi as a group identity is a pseudo-identity of the Cireundeu indigenous people who primarily exist to maintain group beliefs in their beliefs.

Abstract

This Article discusses on Pierre Rosanvallon’s conceptual history of democracy both as a method to understand the antinomy and the pathology of democracy and as a reflection of the generality of moral politics. Using a philosophical analysis, it answers the philosophical problem of man’s desire to be recognized as a human being with dignity in democracy into three parts: the first one deals with Rosanvallon’s conceptual history of democracy, the second part delves into the problem of antinomy and pathology of democracy, and the third part focuses of the search for the empirical normativity which is based on the moral generality. The article arrives at the idea that behind the political contradictions in democracy Rosanvallon puts the empirical normativity which is based on social relationship into his conceptual history of democracy as a condition of possibility of political recognition. Keywords: Conceptual History, Democracy, Empirical Normativity, Epikeia, Pathologies, Piere Rosanvallon.

Abstract

Photography can be used as a means to convey a narrative or a message behind the presented visuals. In the context of political communication, narrative has the power to influence and win opinions. In regard to this, one particular political narrative at which it is interesting to take a closer look among the political moments in Indonesia is the victory declaration in the 2019 Presidential Election contest. Victory declaration is a political phenomenon that occurred in the 2014 and 2019 Presidential Elections. In both occasions this event led to riots. Based on the description above, the research questions are: (1) How is visual photography produced as a medium to convey narratives within political message? and (2) How does the public as viewers or recipients of political messages perceive political messages in the visual form? This study aimed to identify the meaning of political narratives and the interrelationships of photography in the political context in Indonesia. The method employed in this study was Paul Ricœur’s Hermeneutics, with reference to semantic understanding, reflective understanding and existential understanding. An interpretive paradigm with data sources in the form of declaration photos, interviews with photographers and viewers. Our results showed that political success depends on individual aspects in carrying out their roles. In this context these roles of the individuals refer to political figures, agents and supporters. Interrelationships between roles in such group of individuals mainly revolve around cooperation in realizing common prosperity in political goals. This study concludes that cooperation between politicians, agents and supporters must be guided by political ethics as the main guideline for behaving and acting for the sake of achieving common prosperity. In addition, the use of technology in politics must be guided by ethics as an effort to realize a political system that is just, responsible, trustworthy, and meets the moral standards expected by society. Together, individuals, including politicians, agents and society, broadly play the role of moral agents to achieve politics with integrity, honesty and trustworthiness.

A harmonious social life and the flourishing of the human soul will be regarded as fundamental arguments of self-formation ethics in digital communication. Then, the third part of the article will trace out some of the implications of Capurro’s assessment of self-formation ethics as a basic argument for freedom of speech. In this final section, a discussion concerning the contribution of Capurro’s thoughts on criticizing pragmatic and intoxicant digital communication will be considered.
