Abstract

The study delves into the Strategy of Online Alert Portal (WOL) in Managing Criminal News. Its objective is to understand the strategies employed by the Waspada Online portal in handling criminal news and to identify the obstacles in processing such news. This qualitative research utilizes both primary and secondary data sources with data collection methods that involve observation, interviews, and documentation. The study involves three key informants: the Managing Editor, Criminal Journalist, and Coverage Coordinator. The study is underpinned by the Agenda Setting Theory. The research findings reveal that Waspada Online uses strategies involving press releases from the police and utilizes the 5W+1H elements in the development of criminal news content. Various challenges faced by journalists include difficulty in obtaining and interviewing informants, remote and inaccessible locations, and network instability. Solutions to address these obstacles include communication with family for information and disguising themselves as the general public to obtain necessary news.

Abstract

This study examines the comparison of communication and public relations in the early digital era, covering the period from 1990 to 2024. Using a literature study approach, this study analyzes the significant changes that have occurred in communication methods and public relations practices along with the development of information technology. In the early 1990s, communication was dominated by conventional media, which limited interaction between organizations and the public. However, with the advent of the internet and social media, organizations are starting to shift to more interactive and responsive methods of communication. The study found that digital transformation is not only changing the way information is delivered but also creating new opportunities to build stronger relationships with audiences. The results of the analysis show that public relations practices have evolved into a more dynamic strategy, with an emphasis on engagement and transparency. In this context, this study offers insights into the comparison of communication and public relations in the transformation of the early digital era to the present. These findings are expected to contribute to the development of more effective communication strategies in the future.

Abstract

Advances in digital technology have changed the way individuals shape and project their self-image on social media, especially through the use of filters on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. This study aims to analyze the impact of the use of filters on women's self-image in psychological and social aspects. With a quantitative approach, data was collected through an online survey of 50 female respondents aged 18-30 years who actively used filters on social media. The results showed that 75% of respondents routinely used beauty filters to improve their visual appearance. As many as 60% of respondents feel more confident after using it. However, 40% of respondents experience dissatisfaction due to the difference between self-image on social media and reality, which leads to social anxiety and dissatisfaction with the body. Regression analysis showed a negative correlation between the intensity of filter use and confidence (coefficient -0.45; p=0.03), which indicates that the more frequent the filter use, the higher the risk of decreased confidence. The study gathered that the use of filters on social media can reinforce social pressure against unrealistic beauty standards, create a gap between online and offline identities, and increase the potential for self-satisfaction. Therefore, it is important to increase digital literacy and critical awareness of the psychological impact of using filters on social media.

Abstract

This study was conducted on followers of the MedanTalk Instagram account with the aim of analyzing the influence of mass communication on fulfilling the information needs of Medan City residents. The background of this research lies in the increasing reliance of urban communities on social media as an alternative source of fast, accessible, and interactive information. The study population consisted of 1.8 million MedanTalk followers, with a sample of 100 respondents selected through purposive sampling to ensure alignment with the research objectives. Data were collected through online questionnaires and analyzed using simple linear regression to examine the relationship between mass communication and the fulfillment of information needs. The findings indicate that mass communication through the MedanTalk account has a positive and significant effect on meeting the information needs of Medan residents, with a regression coefficient value of 0.957. This suggests that the more intensive the use of mass communication via social media, the greater the extent to which public information needs are fulfilled. These results are consistent with the Uses and Gratification Theory, which emphasizes that audiences actively engage with media to satisfy cognitive, social, functional, and entertainment needs. This research contributes significantly to the development of digital communication studies, highlighting that local social media platforms such as MedanTalk play a strategic role in providing relevant, timely, and credible information to the public in the digital era.
