Abstract

Low student interest in learning English remains a challenge in many Islamic senior high schools, particularly in rural areas where teacher-centered instruction is still dominant. One strategy proposed to address this issue is the Jigsaw method, a cooperative learning approach that emphasizes student collaboration, responsibility,p and peer teaching. This classroom action research was conducted at Madrasah Aliyah Al-Khoirot to examine the effectiveness of the Jigsaw method in increasing students’ interest in learning English, specifically in descriptive text material. The participants consisted of 31 eleventh-grade students, and the study was implemented in two cycles following the Kemmis and McTaggart model. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, interviews, and tests. The findings showed that the Jigsaw method significantly improved student engagement and learning outcomes. The percentage of students who achieved the minimum passing grade (KKM) increased from 35.48% in the pre-cycle to 77.42% in the second cycle. Additionally, 86.4% of students responded positively to the use of the Jigsaw method, citing increased motivation, understanding, and cooperation. Observation results also revealed active participation, especially in peer explanation and group discussions. Based on these findings, the Jigsaw method is considered effective in fostering student interest, promoting active learning, and creating a more interactive classroom environment. It is therefore recommended as an alternative strategy to enhance English learning motivation in Islamic senior high school settings.

The subject research was 27 students 7 grade at SMP Ma’wattaibin. The research purpose was to increase the students’ interest in English learning. This research was done in 3 cycles. The first and second cycles consisted of three meetings, and the third cycle consisted of two meetings. A preliminary survey and a survey of each cycle were conducted. These surveys were done to compare the students’ interest before and after taking action. The findings revealed average of students’ interest in the preliminary survey was 12%. This indicated the low students’ interest in English learning. Then, first cycle showed that the average student interest improved, which was shown by 50% of students being interested in learning English using interactive activities. Yet, the second cycle revealed that the average of students’ interest in English learning was 70%. This current research underlines that teaching English should be constructed by interactive activities in which the students are actively involved, not monotonous methods.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using regalia in improving tenth-grade students’ vocabulary mastery in an Indonesian EFL madrasah context and to explore students’ responses to this approach. Vocabulary mastery is essential for EFL proficiency, yet Indonesian madrasah students frequently face challenges due to reliance on rote memorization and textbook-centered instruction, resulting in limited retention and low motivation. While multisensory techniques such as realia have demonstrated success with younger learners, their implementation at the senior high school level has been limited. This classroom action research was conducted over two cycles with 29 female tenth-grade students at MA Al-Khoirot Malang. Data was gathered through tests, observations, field notes, worksheets, and interviews. Findings revealed significant improvement: mean scores increased from 49.0 (with 0% meeting the minimum criterion of ≥75) to 72.8 by Cycle 2, when nearly 80% of students achieved the criterion. Students showed active engagement, spontaneous use of new vocabulary, and high enthusiasm, attributing their positive responses to realia’s tactile, relevant, and collaborative features. The study concludes that realia is a practical, low-cost, and highly effective tool for enhancing vocabulary mastery in Indonesian EFL madrasah settings.
