Abstract

Alpinia monopleura is an endemic plant which widespread and abundant in Sulawesi. Nevertheless, previous studies have not studied the chemical compound and biological activity. This study describes the chemical compounds and antibacterial and antioxidant properties of the essential oils isolated from A. monopleura. The essential oil was obtained by the hydro distillation method and interpreted by GCMS. Antibacterial properties were determined by the agar diffusion method, while DPPH and ABTS determined antioxidant activity. The most important components are α-caryophyllene, β-pinene, limonene, α-pinene, β-caryophyllene and caryophyllene oxide. Essential oils of leaves and fruit showed excellent antibacterial properties with a MIC strength of 31.3 μg/mL against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25023 and Escherichia coli ATCC 35218. The highest antioxidant effect was also shown by inhibiting ABTS and DPPH radicals, with IC50 strength of essential oil obtained from the leaf being 15.60 and 19.42 μg/mL, respectively, while from the fruit were 10.44 and 11.93 μg/mL. These antibacterial and antioxidant properties indicate that essential oils have advantages in their use in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The Jeruju plant is one of the true mangrove species that typically grows in coastal areas, rivers, swamps, and brackish water regions, and is used for medicinal purposes. Scientific data on Jeruju leaf (Achantus ilicifolious) extract indicate the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, steroids, and saponins, all of which can be utilized for their antibacterial properties, particularly against the acne-causing bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcus aureus is known to cause skin blockages, which in turn trigger inflammation and the appearance of acne. The aim of this research was to determine whether an ethanol leaf extract emulgel of Jeruju (Achantus ilicifolious) could inhibit Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The results of the study indicated that at a concentration of 10%, a inhibition zone of 3.8 mm was obtained, at 15% concentration it was 4.7 mm, and at 20% concentration it was 4.8 mm, categorizing the inhibition zones as weak (<5 mm).

Abstract

The galing plant (Cayratia trifolia L.Domin), one of the endemic plants in Southeast Sulawesi, is proven to contain bioactive flavonoid, alkaloid, and tannin compounds that have various pharmacological effects such as anti-diabetes and strong antioxidants, especially the stem, so it has the potential to be developed as an alternative to diabetes treatment. However, scientific information about the effects of pancreatic organ repair in diabetes still needs to be scientifically proven. The purpose of this study was to reveal the role of purified extract of galing stem on the repair of pancreatic organs of streptozotocin-induced diabetic model white rats. This study is an experimental study, with a post-test design with a control group design using 18 male white rats divided into normal control groups (non-DM), negative control (DM + Na.CMC), positive control (DM + glibenclamide 0.018 mg/kg BW) and treatment samples (DM + purified extract of galing stem 400 mg/kg BW). The results of this study indicate that the administration of purified extract of galing stem is proven to be able to repair damage to the pancreas organs in diabetic model rats shown by the improvement of the morphology of the pancreatic beta cell structure and an increase in the number of endocrine cells in the islets of Langerhans compared to the negative control that was not treated with the extract so that these findings as new scientific data for the development of potential anti-diabetic drugs from galing plants.
