Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a health issue increasingly found among adolescents and is associated with lifestyle changes, including the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and unhealthy eating habits. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and eating habits with the occurrence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus among adolescents at SMK Jaya Buana. Methods: This study employed a quantitative method with a descriptive-correlational design and a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 326 students from grades 10 and 11, selected using stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and a Semi-FFQ. Data analysis was conducted using univariate and bivariate methods, specifically the Chi-Square test. Results: The results showed that the majority of respondents frequently consumed sweet beverages (190 respondents or 58.3%), while 136 respondents (41.7%) fell into the infrequent consumption category. A significant relationship was found between SSB consumption and the occurrence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (p<0.001). Additionally, significant relationships were observed between eating habits—specifically the intake of energy (p=0.043), carbohydrates (p=0.038), protein (p=0.028), and fat (p=0.045)—and blood glucose levels. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and eating habits (including energy, carbohydrate, protein, and fat intake) and blood glucose levels among adolescents at SMK Jaya Buana.

Abstract

Maternal knowledge regarding complementary foods (MPASI) plays a crucial role in meeting the nutritional needs of infants aged 6–12 months. Demonstration methods can serve as a strategy to enhance maternal knowledge through hands-on practice in preparing complementary foods. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of complementary food preparation demonstrations on the knowledge of mothers with infants aged 6–12 months in Karang Sari Urban Village. Methods: A quantitative study using a pre-experimental, one-group pre-test post-test design. The sample consisted of 88 mothers with infants aged 6–12 months, selected via stratified random sampling. Knowledge measurement data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test (α = 0.05). Results: An increase in knowledge was observed following the demonstration, with a mean rank of 44.50. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test yielded a p-value of <0.001, indicating a significant difference in knowledge levels before and after the demonstration. Conclusion: Demonstrations on preparing complementary foods are effective in improving maternal knowledge regarding ingredient selection and food preparation for infants aged 6–12 months. Recommendations: Mothers with infants aged 6 to 12 months are encouraged to apply the understanding gained from the demonstration sessions to their daily caregiving practices. Concrete application includes selecting ingredients, following preparation steps, adjusting food texture according to developmental age, and creating varied, nutritionally balanced meals. Furthermore, continuous knowledge enhancement should be pursued through consultations with healthcare professionals and the use of validated literature.
