Abstract

Abstract

This study addresses the problem of how hidden emotional patterns operate within literary characters shaped by collective trauma, particularly in Ghassan Kanafani’s ʿĀʾid ilā Ḥayfā. It aims to analyze the forms and dynamics of these latent emotions in the characters of Said and Safiyya through Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic framework. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, using intensive reading and systematic note-taking to interpret narrative elements and psychological expressions within the text. The findings reveal that trauma is manifested through the structural interaction of the Id, Ego, and Superego. Said demonstrates a dominant Ego pattern, rationalizing instinctive impulses and moral pressures into ideological reasoning. In contrast, Safiyya reflects an Ego collapse marked by panic, which is ultimately stabilized by the Superego through maternal responsibility. These dynamics illustrate the internal struggle between personal desire, moral obligation, and historical burden. The study contributes to literary criticism by offering a psychoanalytic interpretation of post-Nakba identity formation and highlighting how individual psychological conflict mirrors broader collective fragmentation in Palestinian society.

Abstract

This study examines the construction of moral authority in the Arabic short story Jughrafiyā by Faryal Khalifah, with a comparative reference to the Indonesian short story Robohnya Surau Kami by A.A. Navis. This topic is significant as critiques of moral authority in literature reflect the relationship between individual experiences, social values, and collective responsibility within society. Although numerous studies have explored morality in literature, research that specifically investigates the interplay between textual structure, collective consciousness, and socio-historical context in shaping moral authority remains limited. This study aims to fill this gap by employing a qualitative descriptive-analytical method and the perspective of Goldmann’s Genetic Structuralism. The analysis of textual elements, narrative structure, and socio-historical context reveals that the moral authority of the father figure in Jughrafiyā is symbolic and reflective, rooted in historical experience and collective trauma. In contrast, moral legitimacy in Robohnya Surau Kami is primarily ritualistic and detached from social responsibility. These findings highlight that moral authority becomes effective only when manifested in concrete social action, while also contributing to a broader understanding of moral critique in Arabic literature and cross-cultural literary studies.

Abstract

Gender inequality that places women in subordinate positions within patriarchal systems has been widely criticized in feminist studies. In literary works, criticism of such systems is often represented through female characters who not only perform social roles but also engage in resistance and establish power within society. The novel Daulah Sayyidat Fi Mamlakah Nisa by Niqula Haddad portrays a society led by women as a critique of male domination. However, the dynamics of women’s roles, resistance, and power represented in the novel still require more comprehensive scholarly examination. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the dynamics of women's roles, the forms of women's resistance to patriarchal domination, and the construction of women's power from a feminist perspective in the novel. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a feminist literary criticism approach. The data consist of words, phrases, sentences, and dialogues that represent women's roles, resistance, and power, collected through reading and note-taking techniques and analyzed using content analysis. The findings reveal that women are depicted as having strategic roles as state leaders, political decision makers, and drivers of education and culture. Furthermore, women resist male domination and establish new structures of power that influence gender relations within society.
