Abstract

Waste pickers in Jambi city reduce solid waste by collecting and sorting recycled waste at the ‘Solid Waste Temporary Shelters’ or Tempat Pembuangan Sementara (TPS). However, most waste pickers cannot improve their performance due to challenges confronting waste pickers and lack of attention from the government and the public. This research identified and quantified the solid waste collected and marketed by individual waste pickers and collectors ‘pengepul’. Convenience sampling methods with literature reviews, questionnaires, and interviews were carried out in this study. Most respondents were male waste pickers, 67%, and women, 33% (n=100). The average daily collection rate of male waste pickers is 10.43 kg/day. For female waste, pickers are 7.92 kg/day (waste category: plastic bottles, cardboard, and wastepaper), with an estimated recycling rate of 0.09%-0.89%. Meanwhile, collectors have an average sales rate of 2-5.5 tons/month, with an estimated recycling rate of 1.5%. The recycling value of waste pickers and collectors could be more optimal, impacting the average income of waste pickers Rp. 581,250/month which showed that the market is neither profitable nor socially protected. The research findings could help develop a waste pickers' integrated system to improve the implementation of the circular economy.

Abstract

This study analyses the research dynamics on river water pollution over the last decade (2014-2024) using bibliometric analysis. Data were collected using Publish or Perish software with Google Scholar as the main source, using keywords such as 'river pollution', 'river water quality', 'river contamination' and 'river water pollution'. Articles published between 2014 and 2024 were selected, resulting in a total of 1,000 relevant publications. The bibliometric analysis was conducted using VOSviewer version 1.6.20, which allowed mapping of research trends and visualisation of key themes through network, overlay and density visualisation. The results identified five major clusters in river pollution research, with three dominant themes: "water quality index", "metal pollution" and "microplastics". The overlay visualisation showed an increasing focus on emerging themes such as urbanisation and climate change since 2017, and microplastics as a major concern since 2019. This bibliometric analysis provides valuable insights to guide future research by identifying trends and gaps in river pollution studies. It also supports the development of evidence-based environmental policies and highlights the need for interdisciplinary collaboration to effectively address pressing water pollution challenges.

Abstract

Background: The conversion of agricultural land into oil palm plantations has become a pressing issue due to its significant economic and environmental impacts. While oil palm production offers economic benefits, it also contributes to biodiversity loss and the degradation of ecosystem services. This study aims to assess both the economic valuation and the environmental consequences of land conversion in Muaro Jambi Regency, addressing the gap in current research regarding the dual impact of this transformation. Methods: A total economic valuation (TEV) approach was applied, combining direct use value (DUV), indirect use value (IUV), and option value (OV) to quantify the economic impacts. Data collection included secondary data from government reports, industry studies, and previous academic works. Statistical methods were employed to estimate the economic contributions and environmental costs associated with land conversion. Findings: The total economic value of converting agricultural land to oil palm plantations was estimated at IDR 1.097 trillion per year, predominantly driven by the direct use value of palm oil production. The conversion, however, resulted in the loss of vital ecosystem services worth IDR 1.55 billion per year, as well as significant biodiversity and cultural heritage loss, valued at IDR 12.37 billion annually. These findings suggest that while oil palm cultivation provides substantial economic benefits, it also presents serious environmental challenges. Conclusion: The study underscores the importance of balancing economic benefits with environmental sustainability in land conversion decisions. Effective policy interventions, such as Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES), sustainability certifications, and land rehabilitation programs, are essential to mitigate the environmental impacts of oil palm plantations. Novelty/Originality of this article: While previous research has focused on the economic benefits, this study addresses the environmental consequences, such as biodiversity loss and ecosystem service degradation, providing a more comprehensive analysis.

Abstract

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are the primary driver of climate change and have become a significant concern in recent decades due to their increasing atmospheric concentration. This study aims to systematically review research trends on GHG emissions over the past 20 years using bibliometric analysis. A total of 1,035 articles were analyzed through VOSviewer to map knowledge structure, research dynamics, and emerging topics. The results show that GHG emission research is divided into six main clusters: (1) gas emissions, (2) industrial and waste management, (3) air quality and human health, (4) bioenergy and energy systems, (5) food production, and (6) global climate change mitigation. Research trends indicate a shift from sectoral studies, particularly agriculture and livestock production (2005–2016), to a more integrated and systemic approach involving energy systems, air quality, and human health (2020–2024). The density visualization highlights “gas emission” as the most frequent and central keyword. Moreover, keywords such as "Municipal Solid Waste Treatment," "Energy Production," and "Domestic GHG Mitigation" have emerged as future research hotspots. This study provides a comprehensive overview of GHG emission research developments and offers valuable insights for identifying future research directions and supporting GHG mitigation strategies.

Abstract

It is projected that global waste production will reach 3.4 billion tons by the year 2050, with 33% of this waste not managed in an environmentally sustainable manner. Since the beginning of the 21st century, there has been a significant increase in household and industrial waste, which poses major environmental, public health, and policy challenges. This study employed a systematic literature review (SLR) approach and bibliometric analysis to map global solid waste research trends. The data were collected in three stages: article identification, eligibility screening, and metadata extraction. These data were then analyzed using VOSviewer 1.6.20. A comparative analysis revealed a paradigm shift from a linear approach towards a circular economy model between 2004 and 2024. The period 2014-2024 signifies the consolidation of the concept of sustainability, marked by a 72% increase in network complexity. The research focus underwent a shift from municipal solid waste management to circular economy systems, which are now linked to 38% more derived concepts. New subjects, such as plastic pollution and post-consumption plastic waste, have emerged as predominant themes in 28% of recent publications. The density visualization demonstrates the most significant concentrations in the domains of circular economy and municipal waste management. There has been a marked increase in research activity in recent years, particularly with respect to plastic pollution and waste valorization.

Abstract

The waste issue in Indonesia remains an unresolved environmental concern, exacerbated by the problem of waste importation from developed countries to Indonesia, a practice that has been ongoing since 1989 until now. Since 2018, China, as the world's largest importer of waste, ceased its waste import activities with the implementation of the National Sword Policy (reducing drastically from 60% to 10%). This had repercussions on Indonesia, a developing country and a recipient of waste imports in Southeast Asia. The increase in the volume of waste imports from developed countries to Indonesia was approximately 320,000 tons in 2018. This article aims to discuss the issues of waste importation in Indonesia from political-ecological, social, and economic perspectives, as well as its environmental impact. The article also reviews the compliance with existing laws regarding the waste import mechanism in Indonesia. The literature review method is employed to compile this article, utilizing various research materials related to waste imports and policies in Indonesia. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the waste import issue in Indonesia is a manifestation of political-ecological concerns, where environmental problems are greatly influenced by political (ego-sectoral) and economic aspects. The environmental interests mandated by the Basel Convention, which are subsequently translated into policies and regulations in Indonesia, have not been able to achieve their main objectives, namely, the protection of environmental and human health from the impacts of imported waste. The waste import policy in Indonesia needs to be reevaluated concerning the clarity of requirements and effective law enforcement when violations occur.

Abstract

Abstract

The potential of biomass energy in Indonesia has not been optimally utilized as a sustainable renewable energy alternative, while the use of biomass without processing has the potential to cause environmental impacts. One form of biomass processing that has potential is the production of briquettes using agricultural waste, including rice husks, which have generally only been burned. This study aims to analyze rice husk production and the environmental economic feasibility of its use as biomass briquettes. The methods used include field observations, interviews, and environmental economic feasibility analysis. The results of data collection show that Sumber Agung Village, Suoh District, West Lampung Regency produces 2.5 tons of rice husks per week from 10 rice mills that have been operating for 2–35 years. The feasibility analysis shows a net present value (NPV) of IDR 739,672,991.96, an interest rate of return (IRR) of 10.73%, and a benefit–cost ratio (BCR) of 1.09, indicating that the utilization of rice husks into briquettes is feasible. The results of this study are expected to serve as a basis for consideration in determining the form of sustainable utilization of agricultural waste, particularly rice husks.
