Abstract

English is now used as a lingua franca, most of the native and non-native speakers of English are using English as their mode of communication in their business matters or business organizations. English language is spread all over the world into almost all the fields such as science, engineering and technology, medicine, trade and commerce, scientific research, education, tourism, internet, banking, business, advertising, film industry, transportation, pharmacy and to name a few. The international expansion of English has been predicted and promoted regularly by leaders on both sides of the Atlantic over the past 200 years. In October 1934 the Carnegie Foundation sponsored a conference in New York on ‘The use of English as a world language’. ELF is used in a number of fields in which English is used as the mutual language of choice, such as science, politics, business, and education. The materials of higher education in English is to make it available for the learners and the teachers wherever they are located on this earth, most of the students, teachers and research scholars make use of this opportunity to enhance their qualification as well as knowledge. The widespread of English as an international language and with the advent of the internet as a mode of fast communication channel which has no boundaries, both are mutually enforcing novel trends and bringing tremendous changes in this age of globalization. English is the only language that is internationally spoken and accepted. Furthermore, the impact of the English language on the internet has been disclosed above and it also has been proved that there are many websites using English as their medium of communication. Even though there are certain fields that are not mentioned, it seems that English plays a dominant in those areas also.

Abstract

Reading Aloud strategy used in the teaching reading skills, which means the teachers and students pronounced the word loudly in front of the class to get the information. The strategy is rewarding for students to understand the reading texts. Then, the researchers used a reading test as an instrument to know the students' competence in reading skills. This research used Quasi-Experimental Design.  The result was proved that the score in the experimental class was 61 with a standard deviation was 8.20 and the post-test score was 69.1 with a standard deviation was 8.22 then the score of pre-test in the control class was 56.5 with a standard deviation was 8.53 and post-test was 60.40 with standard deviation was 9. 68. The results achieved from both tests were different. Next, the t-test score both in class was 0, 00. It means that the hypothesis is accepted, it concluded that the implementation of the reading aloud strategy can improve students' reading skills competence.

Abstract

Teaching is one of the absolute requirements or obligations for a teacher where they convey knowledge to students. One of the teachings in this research is felt in the blank strategy because the strategy helps the students to overcome the problem of translation competence. The translation is a transfer of ideas from the source language to the target language and has the same meaning. Thus translation is also very important for students to learn through the teaching process carried out by lecturers to get more information and understand the text. This research is a qualitative method. Then the research instruments used questionnaires and interviews. The total respondents are 30 English department students at the Muhammadiyah University of North Maluku. Based on the result, most of the students are enjoyable and helpful in lecturing the teaching strategy. It proved that students learn translation because it is fun for them and makes it easier to interpret words and sentences. Students who learn translation can help them organize the meaning systematically and improve their knowledge, especially vocabulary, understanding the point of view of the text, and understanding the meaning of the text. It means that the implementation of the teaching strategy in translation class was accepted and improved on students' translation competence. While the data from the interview in this study also showed that students were very enjoyable in learning translation subjects so that they can improve their understanding of the meaning of a text, competence in translating a text, and improve their competence in understanding of English text.

Abstract

The increase of interest in the use of computer-mediated communication (CMC) into students learning and English Language Teaching (ELT) has become a crucial part of a 21st century education. Virtual Learning Environments as a supplementary tool for motivating and empowering independent learning and innovative teaching is practicing to deliver coursework in higher education. Edmodo, called as the “Facebook for Education”, was used to discuss the findings of students’ attitude in writing skill. Data was collected by means of questionnaires, interview, forum discussion, and students’ written evaluation. A mixed method of qualitative and quantitative was used to analyze the students’ perspective about using this online learning tool and the results attained from the assignment feature. The primary instrument, a researcher at Muhammadiyah University of North Maluku (UMMU), worked with a class of fifth semester undergraduate students (approximately 20) of English department of UMMU to introduce Edmodo as online learning is a part of new curriculum practices. The research investigated the effectiveness of using a CMC tool to improve students' writing skill, especially to explore how the use of Edmodo in language learning might contextualize and integrate language instruction using Internet technology. These include relationships with significant social settings, implementation of Edmodo into the curriculum, affective factors, and mastery of metacognitive skills. The results show that the use of Edmodo is successfully facilitating students’ participation in online discussions and task. This also enhanced students’ interest and motivation in improving their writing skill.It reflected that a curriculum and learning activities developed on the basis of sociocultural theory and communicative teaching approach could increase interaction and communication through the SCMC system

Abstract

It is a known fact that English plays a predominant role in the field of education all over the world, and itis used as the common language in the interaction of ELF members who are from diverse cultures and linguistic backgrounds.So, that is why there are many reasons for the student to study English and it is depend on their own perception.The objective of this research is to know the EFL students‟ perception on learning English at SMA Negeri 9 Tidore Kepulauan.This research used qualitative method because it talks about the analysis of EFL students‟ perception on the learning English.Ithas been doneon August 2020. The subject of research is the second grade students of SMA Negeri 9 Tidore Kepulauanlocated in the village of Mafututu, East Tidore district. And, data Analysis employ percentage formula. After present research findings and discussion, the authors drawn the conclusions thatthe EFL students‟ perception on learning English subject is in the good category. The result of this study can be proved by students‟ answer of questionnaire provided shows that the average score from twenty students at SMA Negeri 9 Tidore Kepulauan was 63% which is categorized in the level of good

Abstract

In learning English, each student has different motivations and motivation is the important key to get success in learning. The primary purpose of this research is to disclose the students’ motivation after joining the immersion camp. English Immersion Camp (EIC) is an English learning program where language learners are totally surrounded or immersed by the language they are learning. The research was conducted at English Department of Muhammadiyah University of North Maluku. The sample of this research was 20 English students who had participated in the English Immersion Camp for 3 days in Ternate City and 3 days in Tidore Island. Method use in this research was the combination of quantitative and qualitative method. The quantitative data of the questionnaire were analyzed in terms of means and percentages. For analyzing the qualitative part of the data, the interviewees’ responses for each question were transcribed. After that, the responses were analyzed in terms of themes related to the study objectives. The questionnaire consists of 10 questions in which question 1-5 are questions for intrinsic motivation and question 1-5 are questions for extrinsic motivation, while the interview data contains 5 questions. Data presented in the research findings it shows that the total average score of students' intrinsic motivation is 4,24 and student extrinsic motivation is 3,76 and this is a high ranking in the motivation level ranking. The result in this research also shows that students need an English learning program that can develop and improve their ability to communicate in English confidently and in the right way to motivate them in the process of learning English.

Abstract

Abstract: The researchers conducted this research to determine the extent of the students' competence in understanding singular and plural noun. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative method which is tend to analyze data inductive. In this case, the researchers described the problems found as they are. Location of this research was SMP Al-Irsyad Kota Ternate, where the subjects of this study were the second grade students at SMP Al-Irsyad Kota Ternate with the number of students are 20 persons which consist of 10 males and 10 females. The instrument employed by the researchers was test. The researchers used multiple choice 20 numbers in order to know the students’ competence in using singular and plural noun. In this study, the researchers concluded that the ability of second grade students of SMP Al-Irsyad Kota Ternate in using singular and plural Noun is still very poor. Based on the results of the study, only 1 student who got the highest score of 55 with an average category from 19 students. Meanwhile, 19 students scored below 55 which is in the poor category. So, the average value of the percentage is 30.25%.

Abstract

The objective of research to find out the effectiveness of using webtoon platform on students’ reading comprehension to the first grade at SMA Negeri 1 Halmahera Tengah. This research used quantitative method by using non-equivalent control group design. The research was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Halmahera Tengah involving 50 students in the first grade as a sample and it selected by stratified random sampling. The procedure of data collection are; pretest, treatment, and posttest by using test items as an instrument of the study. The pretest was carried out before learning by using questions that had been prepared by the researchers. After the pretest, it did a learning process (treatment) through webtoon platform. Then a posttest was carried out after the treatment was carried out for four meetings.All data collection was analyzed using descriptive and inferential analysis data such as normality test, homogeneity test and independent sample T-test to compare the results of the pretest and post-test with a significant level of 5%. The results of the study showed (1)students' reading comprehension before treatment was lower, (2) webtoon platform made a very significant contribution to students' reading comprehension, (3) The null hypothesis stated that webtoon platform did not have an effective to improving students' reading comprehension was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted, and(4) the webtoon platform not only contributed to improve students’ reading comprehension in English text, but it also one way alternative media that can be used in teaching proses.

Abstract

Abstract There are many varieties of advertisement, and one of them is billboard. The usage of language on the billboard requires a short message but the meaning is easily understood by consumers. It aims to encourage consumers to buy the products offered. So, the function of language is used to promote goods, and it is also be useful for learners to analyze its language as well as meaning. The purpose of this study is to know the usage of noun phrase on billboards advertisement. The type of research used is qualitative. The object of this research is advertisement boards. Data collection technique is done by choosing billboard images randomly. While, data analysis technique used 3 steps, they are: settle the data obtained, and then apply it in the research result and discussion. The final activity is to analyze data based on the usage of noun phrases on the billboard. From the results of 15 billboards that have been chosen, it can be conclude that not all the language used in the advertisement is in the form of phrases. It is also in the form of sentences. Even, there is a combination between sentence and a phrase in one advertisement. Data prooved that there are 8 advertisements of billboard included in noun phrase. 2 advertisements involved in adjective phrase. And, there are 2 advertisements are categorized as verb phrase. Finally, the others are in the form of sentences. The result of this research can be the additional references for the students in studying about grammar, syntax or even semantics in the university level.
