Abstract

Teaching reading skill to the students needs applying the appropriate strategy to stimulate students? understanding to meet the main purpose in the teaching and learning process. It was expected that the strategy itself should be able to be used by the teacher to design the better ways for the students in order to acquire important information. It is realized that many students now need as much information as possible in comprehending all the texts they read. To overcome this problem, the researcher used chunking strategy to improve students? reading skill. The researcher used true experiment to design this research, then the pre-test was used to find out whether this group in the same level and the post-test was used to detect the progress of the students. The total numbers of the students who involved in the pre-test and post-test were 20. The data showed that the information in the post-test that;  mean score was 70.50, and the pre-test got score was 61.85 then the standard deviation in the post-test was 10.32 and the standard deviation in pre-test is 8.27. It could be concluded that the students get significant progress in their understanding of reading skill by using Chunking strategy in English Department.

Abstract

Reading Aloud strategy used in the teaching reading skills, which means the teachers and students pronounced the word loudly in front of the class to get the information. The strategy is rewarding for students to understand the reading texts. Then, the researchers used a reading test as an instrument to know the students' competence in reading skills. This research used Quasi-Experimental Design.  The result was proved that the score in the experimental class was 61 with a standard deviation was 8.20 and the post-test score was 69.1 with a standard deviation was 8.22 then the score of pre-test in the control class was 56.5 with a standard deviation was 8.53 and post-test was 60.40 with standard deviation was 9. 68. The results achieved from both tests were different. Next, the t-test score both in class was 0, 00. It means that the hypothesis is accepted, it concluded that the implementation of the reading aloud strategy can improve students' reading skills competence.

Abstract

Teaching is one of the absolute requirements or obligations for a teacher where they convey knowledge to students. One of the teachings in this research is felt in the blank strategy because the strategy helps the students to overcome the problem of translation competence. The translation is a transfer of ideas from the source language to the target language and has the same meaning. Thus translation is also very important for students to learn through the teaching process carried out by lecturers to get more information and understand the text. This research is a qualitative method. Then the research instruments used questionnaires and interviews. The total respondents are 30 English department students at the Muhammadiyah University of North Maluku. Based on the result, most of the students are enjoyable and helpful in lecturing the teaching strategy. It proved that students learn translation because it is fun for them and makes it easier to interpret words and sentences. Students who learn translation can help them organize the meaning systematically and improve their knowledge, especially vocabulary, understanding the point of view of the text, and understanding the meaning of the text. It means that the implementation of the teaching strategy in translation class was accepted and improved on students' translation competence. While the data from the interview in this study also showed that students were very enjoyable in learning translation subjects so that they can improve their understanding of the meaning of a text, competence in translating a text, and improve their competence in understanding of English text.

Abstract

Technology has become a demand for students to master their reading skills. Technology right now plays an important role in the teaching and learning process. The lecturer are needed technology to improve their material and make their teaching are effective. It was expected that to apply the electronic whiteboard itself can use by the lecturer to design better ways for the students to acquire important information. It is realized that the fourth-semester students at the English Department of Khairun University are needed as much information on the electronic whiteboard as possible to improve their reading skills. This research is an experimental research that was held at the English Program at Khairun University Ternate. The experimental research involves two groups of students, they are the experimental group and the control group. The researcher used the English Program's fourth-semester students at Khairun University Ternate as a research sample. The result of the t-test in the experimental class shows that the mean score of the pre-test was 74.90 and the means score of the post-test was 81.90. It shows that electronic whiteboards in the experimental class experienced significant improvement in students reading skills. Then, the standard deviation in the post-test was 5.58 and the standard deviation in the pre-test was 4.38. It could be concluded that the students get significant progress in their reading skills after applying the electronic whiteboard.

Abstract

The massive and fast spread of the COVID 19 virus around the world has changed the way education works. The learning delivery in Schools and universities has been switched from conventional classrooms to online mode. This study aims to identify the learner's perception regarding online learning implementation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participating in the study were 68 students of the English Education Study Program. Data collection was done through a survey questionnaire consisting of both open-ended and close-ended questions. Researchers presented the results using descriptive qualitative techniques. Results from this research showed that students have a positive attitude toward the online learning experience in general. The implementation of online learning during a pandemic is considered an effective and cheap way of accessing knowledge.  However, most students showed frustration due to bad internet access, which affects their learning success. Students also felt the need for improvement in terms of interaction and engagement between students and teachers.

Abstract

The writer applied descriptive method and basic statisic. The data are collected through instruments those are essay test and multiple choice. Essay test is about matching the synonym of the particles and translating the particles into Indonesian language. The data were analyzed and tabulated into rating scale and qualification. Based on the data, the students’ mastery in using particles can be categorized as poor score. This is proven by students’ mean score is 41.77% this is found out that only 3 respondents or 8.57% of them obtained good score 4 resoondents or 11.42% of them obtained sufficient score 10 respondents or 28.57% of them obtained poor score and 18 respondents or 51.42% obtained very poor score. Overall, the second semester students of English study program involved in this research could not use particles correctly

Abstract

Proverbs usually consist of groups of words or sentences that state the meaning, condition of a person, or things that reveal about a person, actions, behavior, or things.This research aims to determine the extent of students' competence in mastering English proverbS.Then, this research used descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study were fifth-semester students at the English Education Study Program at the Muhammadiyah University of North Maluku which consisted of 13 students. In the data collection, the researchers used multiple-choice that was consisting of 20 items of English. The results of this study indicate that the fifth-semester students of the English Education Study Program at the Muhammadiyah University of North Maluku fall into the low category in mastering English proverbs, based on the score obtained by the students, it can be seen from the student test results, namely 21.92%. Therefore, English proverbs should be implemented in English teaching regularly.

Abstract

Every human has a different perception. Perception is a response that is issued based on what a person experiences. This study aims to know the students’ perception towards teachers’ characteristic particularly in English Department at Muhammadiyah University of North Maluku. There are three characters discussed in this study: professional teacher character, unprofessional teacher character and expected character. This is a descriptive qualitative study. Research subject is the English Department Students at Muhammadiyah University of North Maluku. The instruments of data collection used are questionnaire and interviews. Research shows that each student has their own perception of thhe teacher’s characteristics in this professional teacher character, unprofessional teacher character and expected character. Professional teacher character according to student perception are consistent with the appointed times, objective to assessment, nice in approach to the students, be able to make the classroom atmosphere more comfortable, better at learning materials, and able to adapt anywhere. Meanwhile, unprofessional teacher character according to student perception are unfair in assessment, ignore the students, just focus on one student, lack of approach to students, inconsistent with time, and rare to explain the material. Students are expecting a teacher character who does not focus only on one student, able to cultivate the classroom, humble, got a sense of responsibility as a teacher to teach, be a good example, and honest and intelligent. Abstract

The implementation of character education in higher education has a great impact on the achievement of graduates. In addition to soft skills, it also has an impact on hard skills. Efforts to cultivate student attitudes and politeness are very necessary. This study is carried out to answer why it is necessary to form student attitudes and politeness and how to instill student attitudes and politeness. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method through analyzing the result of observation, interview, and documentation from WhatsApp or SMS from the students. This study presents qualitative data that most of the students whose attitudes and politeness are formed in the Research on Language Teaching and Introduction to Linguistics courses, Giving assignments (project) that are considered as a way to observe students' attitudes and politeness. The results show that students' respect and politeness towards lecturers and assignments can encourage each student's awareness of learning to improve their good character and also their academic field.
