Abstract

This research is aimed at questing adult EFL learners’ self-directed learning performance in an Indonesian University. A case study is purposely employed to probing the learning behavior performed by adult learners when English language learning is taken as the context of this research carried out. Three student teachers are determined to be interviewed to obtain data. The acquired data is analyzed using thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke (2006). The study discovers that the EFL learners performed various activities presenting their self-directed learning in terms of learning motivation, learning strategy, selfmonitoring, and social competence. This research contributes to body knowledge of English language learning at higher education in which a teacher will be able to choose or select appropriate teaching strategies dealing with learners’ learning behaviour promoting autonomous learning. The findings also suggest the learners to conduct learning process properly since selfdirected learning enables the learners to maximize their both internal and external potentials in order to achieve better English achievement.

Abstract

Cooperative learning is a learning method in which students with different learning abilities are conditioned to work together in a group to achieve the same learning goals and maximize their learning process. This study aims to explore the cognitive perspectives of students in their experience when learning English in the classroom using the cooperative learning method. The data collection technique used was semi-structured interviews conducted on three students as participants in this study. The data was processed qualitatively using thematic analysis. The findings of this study indicate positive perspectives based on students' learning experiences using cooperative learning methods, namely; students are able to find partners who can support and increase the effectiveness in learning English and also the emergence of responsibilities in learning achievement.

Abstract

Looking for opportunities to let learners take charge of their learning autonomously is a pivotal responsibility for the teacher. This study aims at visualizing learners’ self-directed learning in grammar in spoken discourse classroom through poster presentation. Poster presentations which are given to a small group repeatedly has contribution to cultivate not only their speaking opportunities but also self-directed learning, , critical reflection, and independent action. A small group poster presenter consisting of 4 members is recruited as participants of the study. Learners’ journals and a 45 minute-video observation are analyzed using thematic analysis dealing with learners’ self-directed learning. The findings reveal that through poster presentation, the learners’ self-directed learning is portrayed as they select appropriate activities and strategies to present the material by searching from a number of resources, prepare their performance when they want to present, and handle questions or arguments from visitors. Those findings learners’ self-motivation, self- responsibility, and also self-management in learning. This study provides information that the learners should be given opportunities to experience learning meaningfully that fosters their learning autonomy to achieve meaningful learning success. HIGHLIGHTS: Learners need meaningful tasks that facilitate their learning autonomy. Poster presentation fosters learners’ motivation, self-responsibility, and self-management learning as foundations of learners’ self-directed learning. The use of poster presentations should continue to be used and developed in order to provide many benefits for learners.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced all sectors to stop their activities. As a result of this, learning activities were suddenly changed to online methods. Seeing the phenomena that occur around researchers, the decreasing of students' motivation during online English learning can be a serious matter. If the demotivating factor cannot be known, it will be difficult for the teacher to overcome it. To fill this gap, the researcher intends to look for the factors that cause demotivation in students during online English learning. An exploratory case study was employed as the research design and semi-structured interviews were selected as the data collection technique. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis based on demotivating factors (learning contents and materials, teachers’ competence and teaching styles, inadequate school facilities, and lack of intrinsic motivation). Research reveals that there are two major factors of demotivation experienced by students: (1) internal factors; (2) external factors. Internal factors consist of lack of interest; undirected study goals; negative habits, and external factors consisting of surrounding elements; teaching style; teaching materials and teaching content; learning facilities; sudden transition. In conclusion, the teaching and learning practices should encourage students to have positive experiences and not demotivate them in learning English such as using interesting online tasks.
