Abstract

Recently, multimodality has attracted the attention of researchers, notably in the educational milieu. However, only a few studies reported on the way students perceived the use of Genre-Based Multimodal Texts Analysis (GBMTA) for teaching multimodality. After addressing the gap, this study focuses on students’ perceptions on the use of GBMTA in multimodality teaching in higher education. Sixty-nine students were involved in the study. Each of the students produced one journal through three meetings. The journals were then collected for document analysis and thematic analysis (Braun Clarke, 2006). The findings reveal that the students perceived GBMTA as facilitating them in the building of multimodal discourse analysis, challenges and solutions of comprehending multimodal teaching materials, planning better learning strategies in the future, engagement on multimodal learning issues, and multimodal text analysis practices. This study contributes to multimodality teaching or multimodal discourse analysis within genre-based learning.

Abstract

Countless studies have examined the vital role of ELT textbooks as learning sources, particularly in terms of intercultural, multicultural, and trans-cultural analysis. Yet, none of them specifically talked about religious values as the research focus. Hence, this study aimed at construing religious values represented in a selected chapter of an Indonesian ELT textbook. Descriptive problem-driven content analysis was used as the research design, whilst the research data were collected through document analysis. Later, to analyze the data, the research utilized Systemic Functional Multimodal Discourse Analysis (SF-MDA) (O’Halloran, 2008c) as the framework with a focus on representational meaning and transitivity analysis for each visual and textual data. The findings showed that two data modes represent religiosity, namely visual and verbal data. In visual, religious values (artifacts, beliefs, and behaviors) are represented by the classificational process while in verbal data; they are represented by the material and relational processes. Four of Indonesia's large recognized religious communities were represented namely Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Confucianism. Yet, there is no single datum that figures Islamic values, whereas, the Islamic community is the largest in the country and even in the world. Hence, this implication suggests that stakeholders (particularly textbook authors) should pay attention to the issue of how to fairly present the five legalized communities' values existing in Indonesia. Therefore, because Indonesia has varied its communities, ethnicities, and backgrounds, ELT textbooks should fairly embody the diversities more over the religious aspects which are the core competence to gain.

Abstract

In recent decades, multimodality has played pivotal roles in communication and language pedagogy. Conversely, limited studies have emphasized how intersemiosis is represented in English Language Teaching textbooks (hereafter, ELT textbooks), notably in the Indonesian EFL context. To fill this gap, this study examined how intersemiosis contribute to the process of meaning-making in an Indonesian ELT textbook. A selected chapter containing rich verbal and visual relations was selected as a corpus. The corpus was analyzed through Systemic Functional Multimodal Discourse Analysis (SFMDA). The findings revealed that the contributions of intersemiosis were represented by the meaning-making process in verbal and visual texts. This relationship enables students to comprehend the messages communicated by the texts. Pedagogically speaking, the effective design of intersemiosis in an ELT textbook potentially helps students not only understand the delivered teaching materials but also sharpen their multimodal literacy

Abstract

Waqf is frequently the source of family disputes that end up in court. The main reason of waqf conflicts is that waqf assets/land lack a proper legal form such as a Waqf Pledge Deed (AIW) from the Religious Affairs Office (KUA) or a Waqf Certificate from the National Land Agency (BPN). To receive the AIW, the community must manually register, which is a laborious process. To decrease bureaucracy, the Ministry of Religion has launched e-AIW, a digital waqf land registration application that will make it easier to receive the AIW. The current issue is that the application has only been disseminated to the KUA and has not reached the community directly owing to the unavailability. This service intends to provide technical guidance to the community on how to register waqf land via the e-AIW application. The method employed is delivery, practice with the e-AIW program, questions and answers, pre-test, and post-test. The outcomes of this technical guidance activity revealed a positive response from the participants. After being adequately led, participants' grasp of how to utilize the e-AIW application improved, as seen by the average post-test value of those who replied correctly, which was 89.4%. Furthermore, the findings of interviews with various participants revealed that this technical guidance gives a very simple way to utilize the e-AIW

Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of the Think Talk Write learning model on the ability to write announcement texts among eighth grade students at SMPN 18 Tasikmalaya in the 2023/2024 academic year. This research employed a quasi-experimental method with a quantitative approach. The research sample consisted of 40 eighth-grade students, with 20 students from class VIII-D serving as the experimental group and 20 students from class VIII-A serving as the control group. Data collection was carried out using pretests and posttests. The pretest was administered to both groups before the treatment. After the treatment, a posttest was conducted for both groups. To analyze the data, the researcher used an independent sample t-test with SPSS. The average pretest score in the experimental class using the Think Talk Write learning model was 56.35, and the average posttest score was 80.70. The average pretest score in the control class using the conventional learning model was 51.65, and the posttest score was 71.40. Thus, the learning outcomes in the experimental class were more successful than those in the control class. Based on statistical testing (t-test), the difference in the average posttest scores between the experimental and control classes showed that the Sig. (2-tailed) value was less than 0.05, specifically 0.013 < 0.05. This indicates that the Think Talk Write model has a significant effect on the ability to write announcement texts among eighth-grade students at SMPN 18 Tasikmalaya in the 2023/2024 academic year.

Digital business is a type of service business that utilizes sophisticated technology when creating a product or marketing it. The aim to be achieved in this service is to increase SMA/MA students' insight into digital business and make it easier for them to carry out low-fund based businesses that are effective and efficient in accordance with the needs of teenagers and even adults who want to start a business. The methods used in this service activity are socialization/counseling, training, discussions, simulations and application of digital business. With this service activity, the expected result is that SMA/MA students will have an understanding of the importance of entrepreneurship by utilizing technology so that interest in digital entrepreneurship among Madrasah Aliyah students in Tasikmalaya City will increase. This service activity contributes to schools or madrasas in equipping their graduates to have digital business skills so they can produce young digital entrepreneurs.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the factors that negatively affect santri's attitudes toward learning English in an Indonesian Islamic boarding school. Pre-observation revealed that approximately 29% of students exhibited behaviors such as lack of focus, motivation, and interest, often engaging in disruptive actions like joking around, sleeping in class, and neglecting their studies. To explore these factors, a descriptive case study was conducted, involving semi-structured interviews with three 11th-grade students. The findings reveal three primary themes: lack of exposure to English, language anxiety, and lack of motivation. Insufficient exposure to English hindered students’ proficiency, particularly in listening, reading, and pronunciation. Anxiety about making mistakes created emotional barriers, preventing students from engaging in English-speaking activities. Additionally, low motivation, often exacerbated by an uninspiring classroom environment and absence of peers, contributed to disengagement and negative attitudes. These insights emphasize the importance of addressing cognitive, affective, and behavioral factors to promote positive language attitudes and enhance language acquisition.
