Abstract

Human development progress in Indonesia is characterized by the increasing score of Human Development Index (HDI). HDI is an important indicator in measuring efforts to build the quality and equity of human life. HDI consists of four variables including life expectancy at birth, school continuity, average of school continuity and expenditure per capita. In this study, we classify districts or cities on the island of Sumatra based on HDI into three categories; high, middle, and low area. We use cluster analysis for the research. Cluster analysis is a class of multivariate techniques that are used to classify objects or cases into relative groups called clusters. One of the cluster analysis methods is k-means. The result of this research divided into three Cluster. The first cluster or the middle area contained 41 cities. The second cluster or the high area contained 21 regencies/cities. The third cluster or the low area contained 92 regencies /cities. Areas with low scores are of more concern because all indicators are below the average value, these areas are like Pidie, Nias Utara, Pesisir Barat and etc.

Abstract

DRK Tahu is a micro business producing various types of tofu, including white ones. This business is located in Gading Rejo District, Pringsewu. There are three types of waste found in the tofu-cutting process: transportation, delay, and storage. Transportation activities and delays cause a waste of time when completing the cutting process. The time required for the entire tofu cutting activity in one process is 832.65 seconds because the cutting work method still uses a wooden frame and a knife. The percentage of the value-added ratio before the improvement was made was 0.33%. This research aims to reduce waste and help optimize the cutting process to be more efficient and effective. The principle of lean manufacturing is used as a method for overcoming problems. The lean manufacturing tool used in this study is Process Activity Mapping (PAM). PAM is used to identify value-added, necessary non-value-added, and non-value-added activities so that the production process becomes lean. The analysis of the factors causing waste was carried out using a fishbone diagram. The proposed improvement for the cause of the problem is through designing a tofu-cutting tool. The implementation results are time savings of 153.87 seconds and an increased value-added ratio of 0.11%.

Abstract

This study discusses an experimental approach to producing briquettes from sawdust, with the aim of evaluating their burn durability using the Taguchi method. This method was employed to identify and optimize the key factor combinations involved in briquette manufacturing. The experiment tested three main factors—charcoal composition, tapioca flour (as a natural binder), and water (as a solvent)—each at two distinct levels. Four experimental combinations were conducted based on the L4 (2^3) orthogonal array, with each experiment replicated three times to ensure data reliability. The experimental results revealed that the tapioca flour factor (B) had the greatest influence on burn durability, followed by charcoal (A), while water (C) had a negligible effect. ANOVA results indicated that factor B contributed 12.52%, factor A 4.04%, and factor C only 0.01%, with the remaining 83.43% attributed to experimental error. The optimal combination for achieving the best burn durability was A1 (80 gr of charcoal), B1 (16 gr of tapioca flour), and C1 (120 ml of water). These findings offer practical implications for the development of efficient and environmentally friendly biomass-based alternative energy, and demonstrate the effectiveness of the Taguchi method in quality optimization processes.
