Abstract

Introduction section is the first section of the thesis that has an important role which summarizes background information about the topic. The ability to write a clear and concise introduction section of a thesis is indispensable skill to writers; thus it is essential for students to be aware of linguistic aspects of writing. Past literature in writing studies have shown that although many studies have been written about the grammatical errors and mistakes in writing, there is very little research done on grammatical problems in writing introduction section of thesis. This research was a descriptive qualitative research which aimed to analyze grammatical problems found in the introduction section of thesis written by English literature students at STIBA Persada Bunda Pekanbaru. The source of data in this research was documents taken from students’ thesis. The data were collected by using coding sheets. The findings of this research showed that the most common grammatical problems found in introduction section of thesis was incorrect verbs which dominated by tenses confusion and lack of subject and verb agreement. The possible solutions to overcome students’ grammatical problems were using indirect method in teaching grammar and prioritizing grammar structures to teach.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify types of translation errors and to find out the sources of errors (interlingual and intralingual errors) in Indonesian-English translation written by the students. The type of this research was descriptive research which used Error Analysis procedures to identify and analyze the students’ error. The findings showed that the types of grammatical errors made by the students in their translation were three types, namely global errors, local errors, and other errors. The most frequent error made by the students was local errors and the fewest error made by the students was other errors.  Then, this research revealed that mostly errors occurred in students’ translation were caused by intralingual error. Meanwhile, only few errors were caused by interlingual error. The errors occured due students’ incomplete knowledge of the target language.

Abstract

This research was based on the researchers’ curiosity to investigate learners’ understanding politeness and gender concept of advertisements. The advertisements were watched frequently by the learners of this digital era, nowadays. Then, the politeness and gender concept sometimes can be seen in the advertisement. Politeness and gender is part of sociolinguistics subject for English literature. The aim of the research was to investigate learners’ understanding in identifying politeness and gender concept existed in advertisement. The method used in this research was quantitative followed by qualitative as additional information. The population and sample of this research was the sixth semester learners of STIBA Persada Bunda. There were 10 learners as population as well as sample of this research. The data collection technique was gained by asking the learners to choose the multiple choices of politeness and gender questions by watching the video of advertisement. Then, after collecting the data, the researchers evaluated and analyzed the test of each learner. The result of this research showed that the learners’ understanding in identifying politeness and gender existed in advertisements is in low level with score 51,5 “poor” category. The factors that affected the learners’ understanding were the lack of learners’ understanding of theoretical concept of politeness and gender, and hard for learners to differentiate gender concept of sex concept.

Abstract

This research was done based on the needs to improve the learners’ ability in pronunciation of ending –s by using android based application. Android based becomes popular in this era since gadget applies many applications to improve English language proficiency. The aim of the research is to implement the application on android based to improve the learners’ ability in pronouncing ending –s and to find the influencing factors of the improvement. The method of this research was qualitative. This Classroom Action Research was conducted at eight second-year-learners in academic year 2018/2019 at STIBA Persada Bunda Pekanbaru. There were tests, fieldnotes, observation, and interview used in the data collecting techniques in this research. The result shows that implementing the application existed on android based learning media to improve learners’ ability in pronouncing ending –s has significantly improved. It can be seen that the learners’ ability in pronouncing ending –s are at the “fairly good” level category with score 56,67 increases to the “good” level category with score 73,75. Some influential factors towards the learners’ improvement were affected by the students’ willingnes to practice  differentiating the base form of word given and continuous listening practice to the application which was aimed to obtain the information during the teaching-learning process. In conclusion, the implementation of application on android based can improve the learners’ ability in pronouncing ending –s.

Abstract

This research was based on students’ difficulties in understanding the concept of politeness and gender. Advertisement can be one of the alternative techniques to improve students’ understanding on the concept of politeness and gender. This study aims at improving students’ understanding of politeness and gender and finding the factors influencing the improvement. This Classroom Action Research involved ten third-year-students at STIBA Persada Bunda Pekanbaru. The data collection techniques used were tests, fieldnotes, observation, and interview. The results showed that students’ understanding of politeness and gender significantly improved after applying advertisements in the teaching and learning process in which the students’ understanding which were at the low level category increases to the good level category. Some factors affecting the students’ improvement were students’ active participation in obtaining information and students’ enthusiasm during the learning process. In conclusion, the implementation of advertisements can improve students’ understanding of politeness and gender concepts.

Abstract

The thesis abstract is the opening section of the thesis, and it serves to convey the research's substance in a concise manner. Even though it is less than 200 words long, it contains important information, and well-constructed sentences are required while writing thesis abstracts. The objective of this study was to categorize the sentence structure produced by English literature students' in the thesis abstracts into two categories: grammatical and ungrammatical sentences, and to present the ungrammatical sentence structure in a tree diagram by using Phrase Structure Rules (PSRs) by Carnie (2013). This study was descriptive qualitative research that is concerned with structures and patterns especially the sentence patterns. The findings showed that most sentences were constructed in ungrammatical structure with 61% of total sentences and 39% of grammatical structure. Ungrammatical sentences were mostly caused by issues with noun agreement, to-infinitive, prepositions, and articles. This study concluded that students need to improve their linguistic competence by learning linguistic concepts about the sentence structure, and its effect on the meaning.

Abstract

In this digital era, it is good to investigate the semantic in advertisements as media in learning linguistics since the learners are familiar to look at some advertisements. In this research, the researchers wanted to investigate the learners’ ability in semantic of advertisements. This research aims at investigating EFL learners’ understanding in analyzing semantic of taglines in advertisements. In this research, the researchers used qualitative method explained descriptively. In collecting data, learners were asked to analyze 3 different taglines of advertisements. In analyzing data, the researchers counted the score into range given at STIBA Persada Bunda Pekanbaru. The result showed that most of the learners are in good level, since only a few learners are in fairly good. It means that the learners are more easily to get semantic meaning of taglines of advertisements. Findings of the research that had been analyzed by the learners were divided into two things. First, it was easy for the learners to analyze since the advertisements are familiar to see by the learners. Second, only a few learners are difficult to understand the semantic of taglines of advertisements since the learners are dislike and rarely watching advertisement in television or other media.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the students' view on the use of learning aids to support students in online learning such as lecture videos, PowerPoint, and Google Meet. It is also to investigate student outcomes by using lecture videos and other aids. The quantitative design is used with open-ended questions and Likert questions to get students' views related to the learning aids and summative assessment to know the student outcomes after using the learning aids. The number of students involved was 21 students of the English Literature Program at STBA Persada Bunda Pekanbaru in the 2021/2022 academic year. The study showed that most students found that lecture videos were the most helpful aid for them to support in comprehending the material followed by PowerPoint and Google Meet. Then, the student outcomes were better after studying from lecture videos and supported by PowerPoint and Google Meet. This study perhaps can shed some light on other lecturers using multiple media in delivering the material.

Abstract

A pragmatic viewpoint holds that a sentence's presuppositions govern the types of settings in which it may be felicitously stated (Karttunen, 1974). The purposes of the research were to identify the students’ utterance errors in the understanding of the uses of the types of presupposition and to assess the quantitative numbers of the students’ utterance errors in using presupposition. The data in this research were collected by giving presupposition tests to the students. This research was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. There were 25 students were taken as a sample of research. The findings showed that the studen’s ability in uttering presupposition was 51%. (inadequate). The student's ability in classifying the types of presupposition was 67% (Fair). In conclusion, the students found it difficult to comprehend the speaker's meaning of presupposition.
