Abstract

A variety of approaches have been adopted by institutions of higher education offering programmes in translator training. Some of these approaches are centred on early training; while others on socio-constructivism. Presenting a facet of training that differs from those generally used in most programmes, this paper examines how task-based approaches used over the course of the curriculum and the project-based approaches adopted in the final year in the form of translation portfolio can be an integral part of an undergraduate translation programme run by distance learning. Translation students? performance while completing the project online is used as the data supported with online questionnaires. A critical analysis of these two approaches engenders a crucial discussion of increased student autonomy. The project-based translation portfolio is better suited to more advanced students, whereas task-based translation activities are for students at the early stages of training. Nevertheless, the two approaches are compatible and complementary.

Abstract

The present study aimed to find out and describe the effectiveness of using digital storytelling on students' speaking ability in the public speaking subject. Digital storytelling was proposed by Frazel (2010) with three stages: planning, production, and presentation. In this study, the researchers applied a pretest-posttest control group model of experimental research. The population of this research was the fifth-semester English Literature students of STBA Persada Bunda in the academic year 2022-2023. The data were taken from two Public Speaking classes such as Regular A and Regular B class. Speaking tests were used as the key instruments. Digital storytelling was implemented in Regular A as the experimental class, and the conventional method was implemented in Regular B as the control class. The results of the research revealed that the students got lower scores on the pretest, good scores on the mid-test, and very good scores on the final test. After implementing digital storytelling, there was significant progress in students' speaking skills for the experimental class.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and characterize the effectiveness of developing the Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) model integrated with group work projects to improve students’ writing skills. A mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods, was employed in this research. The study utilized a pretest-posttest design for both control and experimental classes. The participants were fifth-semester English Education students at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Lancang Kuning University, with samples drawn from two classes: Regular A and Regular B. Writing tests served as the primary instrument for data collection. The STAD model integrated with group work projects was implemented in Regular A as the experimental class, while the conventional teaching method was applied in Regular B as the control class. The findings revealed that in the business letter writing test, the experimental class scored an average of 76.13, indicating a good quality rating, whereas the control class scored an average of 67.22, with some ideas and supporting evidence lacking. From the first to the sixth meeting, the experimental class demonstrated significant improvement in their business letter writing performance. The students showed an enhanced ability to provide the required information, respond to questions, and include additional details when prompted. They were trained to adhere to proper writing mechanics and to produce writing that is clear, vivid, precise, and specific. The novelty of this research lies in integrating the STAD model with group work projects, which proved effective in improving students’ writing skills, particularly in the context of business letter writing. This study recommends applying similar models in diverse learning contexts to foster broader writing skills development, thereby contributing to advancements in educational practices within the social and humanities fields.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the influence of Canva Magic AI on improving students' writing quality and to gauge their perceptions of using the tool. The study utilized a quantitative, pre-experimental One-Group Pretest–Posttest Design. Eight English literature students were selected using convenience sampling from an Intermediate English Grammar and Paragraph Writing class at STBA Persada Bunda during the 2023-2024 academic year. Data were collected via a writing test and a questionnaire. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students' writing quality after using Canva Magic AI, with a p-value of 0.012 from the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Notable enhancements were observed across various writing components, including better organization, with more students receiving "Excellent to Good" ratings and the complete elimination of the "Not College Level Work" category.  Logical development of ideas component showed significant improvement, with more students achieving higher ratings and lower ratings decreasing to zero. Grammar quality also improved markedly, with increases in higher ratings and decreases in lower ones. Progress was observed in punctuation, spelling, mechanics, and the style and quality of expression, with significant boosts in higher ratings and reductions in lower performance levels. Furthermore, students' perceptions of Canva Magic AI were highly positive, with mean ratings consistently above 4.0 on a 5-point scale. They acknowledged the tool's effectiveness in improving their writing skills and content creation, although some reported variability in experiences with errors, indicating a need for further refinement. The research underscores the effectiveness of Canva Magic AI as a supplementary educational tool, demonstrating its potential to enhance writing skills and overall quality. The implications for educational practices suggest integrating AI tools like Canva Magic AI into curricula to support and improve students' writing proficiency,  fostering a more engaging and efficient learning environment.

Abstract

This research was conducted to measure the washback effect on students, English teachers, stakeholders, and parents of students from the implementation of the National Examination. This research study is a qualitative research design; Data collection techniques in this study were interviews and questionnaires. The results of this study are that the English National Examination have a negative effect rather than a positive effect. The method teachers have used in the teaching and learning process, focusing on preparation for the English National Examination, tends to emphasize reading skills and override other English skills. Then students facing the National Examination tend to be divided into several groups; some relax without studying, but some students feel worried and afraid of being unable to pass the National Examination. National Examination activities for schools certainly impact many things, especially facilities and infrastructure that must be prepared as well as possible by schools so that the National Examination can run well. For parents of students, National Examination activities also affect the pattern of education at home; parents must provide more understanding and advice to their children to study more seriously.

Abstract

The rapid development of novel translations causes shifts in the word structure such as idioms where the meaning cannot be translated literally; thus, some strategies are needed in translating these idioms from the source language to the target language. This study aimed at identifying and analyzing the strategies used in idiom translating and the most dominant strategy used in “Perahu Kertas” novel by Dee Lestari to the English translated version translated by Tiffany Tsao. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative where the collected data later be analyzed according to Baker’s idiom translation. The results showed that 9 translations using similar meaning and form strategy, 8 translations using similar meaning and dissimilar form, 23 translations by paraphrasing, and 8 translations by omission. The paraphrasing was the most used strategy in this translation with a percentage of 48%.

Abstract

This study investigates the social and linguistic barriers encountered by English literature students in developing research proposals, focusing on the interplay between knowledge, power, and academic writing. It aims to identify key difficulties faced by students and evaluate the impact of the Linguistics Research Methods (LRM) course in addressing these challenges. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study involved 32 undergraduate students from Universitas Persada Bunda Indonesia and utilized both questionnaires and tests, including pre- and post-assessments of proposal writing. The evaluation covered five core indicators: organization, logical development of ideas, grammar, punctuation and mechanics, and style and expression. The findings show a notable improvement in students’ writing performance after completing the LRM course. The average pre-test score was 54, while the post-test score rose to 72, indicating a significant enhancement in their proposal-writing skills. Nevertheless, students struggled with key aspects such as articulating research focus, distinguishing literature reviews from problem statements, and presenting their ideas in clear, academic language. These challenges point to deeper issues of epistemic access and uneven academic capital. This research contributes novel insight into how academic gatekeeping and unequal access to research literacy intersect within undergraduate education. It recommends a pedagogical emphasis on critical academic writing, reflective inquiry, and inclusive mentorship to support students’ entry into scholarly communities. These findings have broader implications for improving higher education practices in the social sciences and humanities, particularly in non-native English contexts.
