Abstract

Most traditional societies have different conceptions of death and dying. The people of Ngada in Central Flores have a conception of death and dying called ‘mata golo.’ Mata golo is a bad death or a bloody death. This kind of death is caused by, for instance, a natural disaster, being killed by others, being killed in a traffic accident, etc. This article presents a theological inculturation view of the death of Christ on the Cross as a sign of reconciliation and peace in the perspective of mata golo among the Ngada people and in that of the ke’o rado ritual that follows it. This ritual is meant to bring about reconciliation and establish peace between the members of the clan on the one hand and the dead and the ancestors on the other hand. By using the inculturation method, we first listen to the culture. For this, the qualitative research method is used by conducting field research observations, in-depth interviews with key informants, and literature studies of previous studies on mata golo. The result is then compared with the teachings and views of the Catholic Church on the death of Christ. These two themes are then synthesized to build a distinctive theological concept, which could be a contribution to future pastoral services.

Abstract

Goodness is the basis and goal of all moral actions. Therefore, ethics, be it theological or philosophical, must in some way explain specifically what goodness is and where one can find it. The Christian faith answers this by stating its fundamental belief that God is good. It says that the Christian belief in goodness is based on faith in God, placing each Christian at the heart of the relationship between faith and moral action. After confirming this fundamental Christian belief that God is the centre of all values, in this paper, we will draw out some implications of the relationship between faith as a personal and communal experience of God and the development of an attitude of religious moderation in a pluralistic Indonesian society. Thus, cultivating an attitude of religious moderation does not stop as an external rule but should go further as an ethical imperative for every Christian.

Abstract

The reality of scandals involving priests in the Catholic Church has recently caused deep wounds to the Church. This fact also requires the Church to pay serious attention to the human formation of her priests. This study aims to retrace the human qualities of a priest that can contribute to the development of virtues necessary in his vocation and priestly ministry. By utilizing an analytical study of texts and various official Church documents, the authors seek to bring to the fore the main qualities that the Church requires and expects from a priest. As a result, firstly, the author finds that there is a correlation between the personal qualities of a priest and the development of the virtues required in the vocation and ministry of the priesthood. Secondly, the study also found that it is important for these human qualities to be shaped during the process of formation throughout life, so that they become virtues that are deeply rooted in a priest and his ministry.

Abstract

Bura su’a is a special ritual performed by the Ngada people in Eastern Indonesia in their main traditional house (Sa'o Ngaza) on the eve of their traditional New Year celebration called Reba. This ritual aims not only to pass on the heritage of their ancestors and important traditional moral values, but also to affirm the existence and identity of the clan. This article aims to examine the moral messages conveyed in the Bura su’a ritual from a Christian moral perspective. Using a descriptive, qualitative, interactive analysis approach and contextual theology methods, the authors will examine this theme in three parts. First, they will discuss research studies of the su’a and the Bura su’a ritual, as well as the symbols and expressions used in it. Second, the authors will examine the Bura su’a ritual from a Christian moral perspective. Here, the authors will compare the messages in the Bura su’a ritual with certain concepts in Christian moral theology. Third, the authors will recommend efforts to ensure the preservation of this ritual in Ngada culture and to concretize the moral message of living together in the digital age. The authors found that the Bura su’a ritual contains Christian moral values, namely, first, respect for God, ancestors, fellow human beings, and nature; second, parental responsibility in educating children and concern for the weakest and poorest in the community; and third, the formation of a morally integrated personality based on biblical and theological virtues of courage, honesty, perseverance, and justice.

Abstract

The Ngada people of Flores have a very special way of looking at death, which is known as mata golo. Mata golo is any form of unnatural death. For example, being hit by a vehicle, drowning or being killed. This form of death is always perceived by the Ngada as a curse. It is a result of past sins and mistakes. The purpose of this study is to explore the concept of the mata golo and its interpretation from the perspective of Christian faith. This study adopts an interpretive phenomenological qualitative approach. Observation and interviews were used to collect the data. Research sites were in Tude, Tiwuriwu I village, Jerebuu subdistrict and Gisi, Ratogesa village, Golewa subdistrict, Ngada district. The research subjects were family members of mata golo victims, traditional elders and traditional priests (lima mali). The results of the study show that the Ngada people believe that there are three types of death, which are understood differently: gore gote, mata ade and mata golo. Gore gote is a form of death that should be celebrated and given thanks for, for example, longevity. Mata ade is a natural death, for example due to illness and disease. Mata golo is a death that is not good, unnatural and can be devastating for the family left behind. A Christian perspective, which understands death as an event of faith and salvation in Christ, will be brought to bear on this last point. The study will conclude with some special remarks.

Abstract

The ke'o rado ritual is a rite of reconciliation and purification for those who have had a tragic death (mata golo) in the Ngadhanesse, Flores, Eastern Indonesia. The primary purpose of this article is to interpret the meaning of the ke'o rado ritual and its theological implications. This paper is a qualitative descriptive study and participatory observation using a literature review and key informant interviews. The study found no official confirmation from the Catholic Church authorities in Ngada that ke'o rado contradicts Christian doctrine. However, some Ngada people consider that the ritual is contrary to the teachings of the Christian faith regarding salvation in Christ and thus should be abandoned. In contrast, this paper concludes that the ke'o rado ritual must be observed since it has theological significance and can be brought into dialogue with the teachings of the Christian faith.
