Abstract

This study is aimed at describing the literature learning process through a Synectics Gordon teaching model in a class of Literary Appreciation. It is projected to promote literacy through implied and embedded values, particularly in regard to critical racial literacy through Asian American literature. This case study involves a lecturer and students in a Literary Appreciation course in an English department. The data were collected through observations and interviews. The implemented stages of the Synectics teaching model are: Describing the topic, Describing personal analogies, Identifying compressed conflicts, and Re-examining the original topic. Due to the time constraint, only one stage—Creating a new direct analogy—was elicited. The results suggest that the reading strategies i.e., shared reading aloud and visualization, enhanced students’ understanding of the story and elicit powerful emotions about the literary work. The findings of the study also imply that Gordon's Synectics model aids in raising students' awareness of racism and other associated social issues by allowing them to put themselves in the shoes of persons from various racial origins. Implementing the same method, this study recommends adapting local/ national literature in varied classrooms.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the difference between using role-play and debate methods on students' speaking skills in English subject. This study is quantitative research with a comparative study method. The sample of this study was the students of XI IIS3 and XI MIA1 at one of the top-favourite private schools in one of the developed regencies in West Borneo. The researchers applied a performance test to collect the data while the T-test was used to analyze the data. The result revealed there was a significant difference between using role-play and debate toward the students' speaking skills. It can be seen from the significant difference in the comparison of their average values. In the role-play method, the average value is 62.11 while in the debate is 51.82. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of the role-play method is better than the debate method in an EFL setting. However, this study realizes that it happens because the role-play method offers a flexible chance for the students to ask for help during the preparation of the speech production.

Abstract

Deconstruction plays a significant role in literary analysis as a method of approaching distinct works by querying their original objectives. The Devil Wears Prada is a 2006 film that was adapted from Lauren Weisberger's 2003 book of the same name. The protagonist, Andrea Sachs, a 20-something woman, is following her dream of becoming a journalist by working as Miranda Priestly's assistant. This study aimed to describe the deconstruction of female empowerment on the two main characters of the movie The Devil Wears Prada, namely Miranda Priestly and Andrea Sachs. It was qualitative research with a critical discourse analysis approach. The researchers examined the movie and the screenplay to find elements supporting the female empowerment deconstruction in the two characters. The findings of this study elaborated the deconstruction of female empowerment in Miranda’s character and in Andrea’s character. The deconstruction of female empowerment in Miranda’s character shows that Miranda does not represent the idea of female empowerment. With her material and professional success, she seems to represent the notion but in a conventional way. Meanwhile, female empowerment is challenged with the Derrida’s theory and redefined through Andrea’s character. Andrea established herself as an empowered woman who shows integrity and makes unconventional significant decisions in her life. She also can take control and empower other people in the working place by showing sympathy to her colleagues including Miranda when her career was threatened.
