Abstract

This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of English and Arabic teaching and learning the Language and Culture Center (LCC) at the State Institute for Islamic Studies Shekh Nurjati Cirebon (SIIS SNJ) based on the students’ perception. The study is to find out students’ opinion toward English and Arabic teaching and learning process and provide beneficial information for the teaching system in the LCC. This study used descriptive survey approach. The subjects were the students of English and Arabic intensive program. The data were collected through the questionnaire The results of the study are as follows. First, the teaching quality indicator is categorized as fairly effective. Second, the generic skills indicator is categorized as less effective. Third, students’ motivation indica-tor is categorized as less effective. Fourth, learning resources is categorized as not effective. Fifth, the assessment appropriateness is categorized as fairly effective. Sixth, the students’ workload is catego-rized as less effective. Seventh, the curriculum content is categorized as less effective. Keywords: students’ perception, teaching and learning, effectiveness.

Abstract

This article reports a study of results of Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) model on the teaching of English writing, particularly on students’ personal recount writing and their motivation to write. The study was aimed at investigating whether: 1) SRSD was effective toward students’ personal recount writing and 2) SRSD was effective toward students’ writing motivation. A quasi-experimental research in the form of pre-test posttest control group design was applied in the study. To date, second year students in a junior high school in Kebumen, Central Java, Indonesia were used as the participants of the study. There were 60 students participated in the study whereby 30 of them were assigned into the experimental group received the SRSD model; and another 30 students were administered into the control group with the conventional teaching model. Results on MANCOVA show that students’ writing performance in the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group with p=0.017 while students’ writing motivation in the experimental group was insignificantly higher compared with the control group with p=0.104. This indicates that although SRSD was effective toward students’ personal recount writing, its effectiveness couldn’t be followed by students’ writing motivation.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The aim of this research is to investigate the implementation of reading instruction in EFL classroom. The method used was a survey research. The data for this research was gathered by distributing a questionnaire. The questionnaire was formulated based on the theories of experts about the ideal reading instruction. The data were analyzed descriptively by looking at the percentage of choice derived from the subjects of the research. This research discussed six best characteristics of reading instruction. It also presented six less implemented characteristics of reading instruction in EFL classroom.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out (1) whether the use of e-portfolios is more effective than the use of e-dialogue journals, (2) whether the use of e-portfolios is more effective than the use of conventional assessments, (3) whether the use of e-dialogue journals is more effective than the use of conventional assessments, and (4) the most effective assessment of all in the teaching of writing skills. This study was a quasi-experimental research using Pretest-Post-test Control Group Design. The data were collected in January-February 2016 in SMK Penerbangan Adisucipto Ardhya Garini. The sample of the research was the students of class X3, X4, and X8 which were determined by using cluster simple random sampling. There were four hypotheses of this study and the research findings revealed that the hypotheses were accepted. It was indicated by all of the Sig values which were lower than the level of significance (0.05).

Abstract

The aims of this study are to describe the cohesion markers, coherence markers, and its situation and cultural context contained in the lyrics of “Belle'' the “Notre-Dame de Paris”. This study used the scrutinize method for collecting data by applying reading technique, SBLC (non-participant observation) technique, and note-taking technique. The data was analysed by using division classifying technique, replacing technique, expanding technique, and marker identification technique. The results of this study showed that: (1) the cohesion markers found based on the analysis included grammatical and lexical cohesion. Those markers are references (63 data), conjunctions (4 data), synonymy (6 data), repetitions (4 data), collocations (2 data), and equivalence (1 data); (2) The coherence markers found on this analysis are relationship of addition meanings (1 data), relationship of time meanings (3 data), relationship of comparison meanings (2 data), relationship of effect meanings (1 data), relationship of explication meanings (4 data), and relationship of usability meanings (5 data); (3) Based by situation and cultural context analysis, this data contains the love story among Quasimodo, Frollo, and Phœbus towards Esmeralda, the gypsy dancer.

Abstract

Advertising is one of the means used to deliver and promote a product and these ads also contain elements of discourse on it. In every advertisement, impress and attract consumers are the main points such as the model, sound, picture, and verbal language that have to be used so that potential consumers will be directly connected and interest to the product being advertised by listening to, looking at, and reading. This research aims to analyze the woman’s position in Shopee 12.12 birthday sale advertisement. This research uses Sara Mills’ critical discourse analysis approach with the Feminist Stylist Approach (FSA) approach. One of the discourses which analyze about feminist sees how is the position of subject-object and the viewers on Shopee 12:12 birthday sale advertisement, then it will reveal the discourse which will be shown to the public to know the woman’s construction and to explain the pattern of woman’s construction through some scenes on Shopee 12:12 birthday sale advertisement. The focus of this research is the formulation used to analyze an advertising discourse whether it is a critical discourse or not.

Abstract

Increasing motivation is necessary for students in learning English vocabulary. The higher motivation the students gain, the bigger success they achieve in mastering vocabulary. However, most students in senior high schools have less motivation in learning vocabulary, especially in memorizing them. Thus, the teachers need to discover appropriate media for increasing their motivation. Some applications can be used through the smartphone as the need for vocabulary learning. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of using Quizlet Application as the media for increasing the students’ motivation in learning vocabulary. Nonequivalent control group design was used in this research. The participants were 65 students who were divided into the experimental and the control groups. The students’ motivation was observed during the process of vocabulary learning by using the observation checklist. In processing the data, the Wilcoxon test was used. The results show the use of Quizlet Application is effective to increase the students’ motivation in learning vocabulary. Students felt more enthusiastic, did not get bored easily, and thus showed high interest when learning vocabulary via the app. They also did the tasks provided in that application independently.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi, mengidentifikasi, dan merumuskan  jumlah kata dan frekuensi penggunaan jenis kata pada buku siswa jenjang PAUD. Penelitian dilakukan pada tahun 2021 dengan menggunakan desain penelitian deskriptif-kuantitatif dan menggunakan alat bantu korpus linguistik Antconc. Data diambil dari 34 judul buku elektronik cerita anak jenjang PAUD terbitan Badan Bahasa tahun 2019.  Pada aspek perjenjangan, buku elektronik yang dilabeli PAUD ternyata hanya ada sebesar 20,58%, sedangkan sejumlah 79,42% buku lainnya lebih tinggi jenjangnya bagi peruntukan buku PAUD, yaitu bagi sekolah dasar kelas 1 hingga kelas 3. Dalam aspek jenis kata, pada buku elektronik jenjang PAUD ditemukan jenis kata yang paling dominan, yaitu nomina (35,2%), verba (21,2%), adverbia (11,2%), ajektiva (6,48%), preposisi (4,84%), konjungsi (4,38%), pronomina (4,35%), sedangkan jenis kata lainnya (demonstrativa , interjeksi, kategori fatis, interogativa, numeralia, artikula) ditemukan dalam rentangan (2,56% - 0,72%). Kesimpulan: a) jika memungkinkan, hasil penelitian dapat digunakan untuk perbaikan panduan perjenjangan buku yang sudah ada; b) ihwal perjenjangan buku sebagai panduan perlu dimantapkan dengan ujicoba beberapa panduan, apakah merujuk panduan Puskurbuk Kemendikbud, Fountas Pinnele, Lexile, atau lainnya; c) Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat menjadi pembuka bagi penelitian buku berjenjang untuk implementasi Gerakan Literasi Sekolah pada tingkat Pendidikan PAUD, dasar, dan menengah.Kata Kunci: perjenjangan buku, PAUD, materi baca pengayaan, gerakan literasi sekolahAbstractThis study aims to explore, identify, and formulate the number of words and the frequency of use of word types in early childhood education (PAUD) students' books. The research was conducted in 2021 using a descriptive-quantitative research design and using the Antconc linguistic corpus as a tool. The data is taken from 34 titles of electronic books for PAUD level children's stories published by the Language Agency in 2019. In the aspect of grading, there are only 20.58% of electronic books labeled PAUD, while 79.42% of other books have a higher level for PAUD book allocation, namely for elementary school grades 1 to grade 3. In terms of word types, in PAUD level electronic books found the most dominant types of words, namely nouns (35.2%), verbs (21.2%), adverbs (11.2 %), adjectives (6.48%), prepositions (4.84%), conjunctions (4.38%), pronouns (4.35%), while other types of words (demonstrative, interjection, phatic category, interrogative, numeral) , articular) were found in the range (2.56% - 0.72%). Conclusions: a) if possible, research results can be used to improve existing book tiering guidelines; b) the issue of the hierarchy of books as a guide needs to be strengthened by testing several guidelines, whether referring to the Puskurbuk guidelines of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Fountas Pinnele, Lexile, or others; c) This research is expected to be an opening for tiered book research for the implementation of the School Literacy Movement at the PAUD, primary, and secondary education levels.Keywords: book leveling, PAUD (early childhood education program), enrichment reading materials, school literacy movement

Abstract

Abstract. Digital literacy skills have a positive impact on managing academic tasks, including writing academic essays. This study aims to describe the reliability of references and the quality of information content in student academic essays. This research focuses on students' digital literacy activities in accessing valid reference sources and to produce digital content that has quality information content. This research was conducted on 30 students who participated in face-to-face and independent learning and independent learning in writing academic essays. Students' academic essays were analyzed to obtain data on the reliability of references and the quality of information content. Student responses were obtained from questionnaires and interviews to gather data on the reasons for selecting references. Data analysis shows that students still use blogs, Wikipedia, and online newspapers as references on the grounds of their relevance to the writing being developed. The results of the analysis of the information content of student academic essays show that students can make academic essays that have quality information content worthy of being disseminated in the digital world.  Keywords:   References, Academic Essays, Reliability, Information Content.
