Abstract

This study examines the role of church advocacy in addressing social inequality related to road infrastructure development in Neniari Gunung Village, a disadvantaged area in West Seram Regency, Indonesia. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that inadequate road infrastructure has significantly affected education, healthcare access, and local economic activities. In response to weak government accountability and alleged budget mismanagement, the church emerged as a moral and social actor advocating for justice and transparency. Through persuasive engagement, community mobilization, and dialogue with authorities, church advocacy strengthened social awareness, participation, and solidarity within the village. Although tangible infrastructure improvements remain limited, the advocacy process contributed to empowering marginalized communities and sustaining public discourse on equitable development. The study highlights the importance of faith-based institutions as informal governance actors capable of influencing development processes in disadvantaged regions.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between ecotourism development, cultural identity, and social transformation within the indigenous island community of Hukurila. The research investigates how ecotourism shapes cultural preservation, community participation, and socio-economic transformation in the context of sustainable tourism governance. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in tourism sociology, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, documentation, and field notes involving customary leaders, local government officials, tourism managers, residents, youth groups, tourism entrepreneurs, and visitors. The findings reveal that ecotourism has strengthened local economic opportunities while simultaneously transforming social relations, livelihood patterns, and community participation. Indigenous cultural identity remains preserved through customary rituals, local wisdom, and traditional governance systems integrated into tourism practices. However, tourism expansion also generates sociological challenges, including cultural commodification, unequal access to tourism benefits, environmental pressures, and shifts in traditional authority structures. The study introduces the concept of “Indigenous Island Ecotourism Sociology,” emphasizing the interconnected relationship between marine ecology, customary institutions, cultural identity, social participation, and sustainable tourism governance. This research contributes to tourism sociology and indigenous studies by demonstrating that ecotourism functions not only as an economic activity but also as a medium of cultural resilience, identity negotiation, and community adaptation in coastal societies.

Abstract

This study examines the role of religious activities in maintaining social solidarity and preserving the cultural identity of the Batak Toba community in Ambon amid social change, migration, and increasing cultural diversity. The research aims to analyze how collective religious practices function not only as spiritual expressions but also as social and cultural mechanisms that strengthen community cohesion and reinforce ethnic identity among Batak Toba migrants. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation involving community leaders, church members, and Batak Toba families residing in Ambon. Data were analyzed thematically to identify patterns of interaction, cultural transmission, and collective values embedded in religious activities. The findings reveal that religious gatherings, worship services, traditional church events, and faith-based communal celebrations play a significant role in fostering mutual support, strengthening kinship networks, and preserving Batak Toba cultural traditions, including language use, customary values, and collective rituals. Religious activities also function as adaptive spaces that enable the community to negotiate cultural identity within a multicultural urban environment. The novelty of this study lies in its emphasis on the integration of religion, migration, and ethnic identity preservation within the context of an urban multicultural society in Eastern Indonesia. The study concludes that religious activities serve as an important socio-cultural instrument for sustaining solidarity and cultural continuity among migrant communities. It recommends strengthening community-based religious and cultural programs as part of broader social and political efforts to promote multicultural harmony, social integration, and cultural resilience in diverse societies.
