Abstract

The Oily Water Separator is an auxiliary equipment on a ship capable of separating oil from oily air discharge until the separation reaches less than 15 ppm through filtration and density difference. On board the vessel KM. DOLPHIN NUSANTARA 2 owned by PT. PELAYARAN BERJAYA NUSANTARA, the writer conducted research on the OWS from TAIKO KIKAI type USC-03, which is a machine used to filter bilge water before discharging it into the sea. There was an issue where the oil content produced by the OWS exceeded the limit set by MARPOL, which is 15 ppm, triggering an alarm indicating excessively high oil content. The writer conducted a 9-month and 3-day-long research, starting from November 15, 2020, until August 18, 2021. The data obtained was directly from the research object, the Oily Water Separator, and involved direct maintenance conducted with the engineer overseeing and guiding when trainees were directly involved in the maintenance or repair work. Additionally, documentation related to the thesis title was included. The results obtained from this research indicated that the increase in oil content in the Oily Water Separator's output was due to the dirtiness of the filters within the system and a lack of understanding regarding the operation of these filters, thus resulting in the elevated oil content.

Abstract

This research was conducted to determine efforts to implement traditional boat safety standards on Lake Matano, South Sulawesi using AHP analysis. Data was obtained by observing and interviewing officers working at Lake Matano and Lake Tuwuti ports, so that several criteria were obtained as an effort to implement traditional boat safety standards on Lake Matano. From the results of the analysis it was found that the efforts that must be made to implement traditional ship safety standards with the highest weight are carrying out socialization of river and lake transport safety regulations by 11.687%, increasing supervision by 11.345%, firmness of officers so that ships comply with safety regulations by 11.069%, compliance with regulations ship safety with the character and condition of the ship 10.977% and simplifying the process of certifying ships and crew members 9.122%.

Abstract

The operation of the steering system on a training ship often faces technical and operational obstacles that affect the vessel's maneuverability and navigational safety. This study aims to determine the impact of maneuvering risks that hinder the operation of the steering system on the Barombong Training Ship, as well as efforts for optimization of the steering system to improve the maneuverability of the Barombong Training Ship and navigational safety. The method used is descriptive qualitative, with an in-depth analysis of empirical data obtained from interviews, observations, and documentation on the Barombong Shipping Polytechnic Training Ship. The data were analyzed using the USG (Urgency, Seriousness, Growth) method to determine problem priorities. The results of the study show that the ship’s steering system is vital for ensuring navigational safety and maneuverability. Routine inspection and maintenance of the steering system—including checks on hydraulic pressure, rudder components, steering gear, and hydraulic fluid—are essential to prevent system failures. Additionally, ship maneuvers must be conducted carefully, with proper adjustments to the vessel’s speed based on sea and weather conditions to avoid excessive strain on the steering system. Effective communication among crew members and maneuvering drills under varying conditions are also critical for responding to emergency situations. Proper load distribution and speed reduction under certain conditions further enhance steering performance. This study recommends regular inspections, adequate maintenance, and consistent training to improve crew competence in maintaining the operational safety and maneuverability of the Barombong Training Ship.
