Abstract

This study focus on how contextual teaching-learning (CTL), as one of learning method, can improve student engagement. Participants of this study were 156 college students in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The study was conducted with an experimental approach. Measurement of student engagement was done by using School Engagement Scale. This scale was adapted into Indonesia version, and it has Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient 0.859 with 15 items. Result of data analysis showed that there was a significant difference on student engagement among college students (p=0.042), but student engagement scores in posttest was smaller than scores in pretest (N Negative Ranks = 83, Mean rank = 78.20; N Positive Rank = 64, Mean rank = 68.55; Ties = 9). Additional analysis was also discussed in this study. From this result, we can conclude that CTL not effective to improve student engagement among college students. Results and limitations of this study are discussed further in this paper.

The hypothesis of this study was “there was a relationship between social support and adversity quotient in adolescent school transition”. Subjects in this study are 7th grade students in Sleman. All subjects are female and about 11 to 14 years old. This study used Social Supports Scale & Adversity Quotient Scale made by researchers. The Social Support Scale refer to House's theory and the adversity quotient refer to Stoltz's theory. This study use Pearson's Product Moment Correlation to examine whether there was a correlation between social support and adversity quotient in adolescent school transition. Data analysis showed r= 0.520, p = 0.000 (p<0.01) which mean that there was a very significant positive correlation between social support and adversity quotient. Abstract

Research on procrastination has been widely done, however, there was limited research using interventions. Based on the concept of self-regulated learning, the effectiveness of self-regulation training was examined to reduce student procrastination on thesis writing. The hypothesis was the self-regulation training will reduce the procrastination level of undergraduate thesis writing. Ten psychology students participated in this training and measured by TKSS of Djing (2010). This study used a quasi-experimental with one-group pretest-posttest design. Result showed that self-regulation training effectively reduce student procrastination on thesis writing, t (5) = 2,132, p = 0, 04 (one-tailed), (p < 0.05) and D = 0, 69. Therefore, self-regulation training could be taken to overcome student procrastination on thesis writing. It can be done as a preventive or curative tool. Keywords: self-regulation training, procrastination, students

Abstract

Smartphone use is increasing worldwide. Despite the benefit of using a smartphone, a growing body of research has reported smartphone use's negative effect. Lack of self-control has been associated with problematic use of smartphones as well as stress. However, there is still little evidence of how religiosity could have an impact on problematic smartphone use. This study aimed to examine the indirect effect of religiosity on problematic smartphone use via self-control and stress. A few 146 undergraduate students enrolled in this study. They completed an online survey comprising problematic smartphone use, religiosity, self-control, and stress. Our findings showed a negative association between religiosity or self-control with problematic smartphone use. Stress also correlated positively with problematic smartphone use. Path analysis demonstrated the mediation effect of self-control on religiosity and problematic smartphone use, but not the stress. These results underlined the psychological mechanism underlying smartphone use of students. Moreover, religiosity could be considered to prevent the detrimental effect of problematic smartphone use.

Abstract

Subskala tersebut yaitu self-efficacy for learning and performance, control of learning beliefs, metacognitive self-regulation, time and study environment, serta effort regulation.

Abstract

Procrastination is a prevalent phenomenon in academic contexts. During online learning, the problem of postponing may become more prone to occur. Previous studies have shown that self-regulated learning has a robust effect on procrastination. However, researchers rarely consider the link between patience, self-regulated learning, and procrastination. This study investigated the role of patience and self-regulated learning on academic procrastination. We propose a mediation model that self-regulation would mediate the relationship between patience and procrastination. A total of 290 undergraduate students from a private university in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, enrolled in this study. There were 103 males and 187 females aged 17-24 (M=19.5 years). We collected the data by administering patience, self-regulated learning, and academic procrastination questionnaires. The result showed that patience, self-regulated learning, and procrastination were correlated significantly. Bivariate correlation showed patience positively and significantly associated with all self-regulated learning subscales: goal-setting, environmental structuring, time-management, help-seeking, self-evaluation, and task strategies. Furthermore, mediation analysis gives evidence that patience indirectly affects procrastination via student self-regulated learning. Only goal setting and time management could mediate the relationship between patience and academic procrastination at the specific indirect level. These findings highlight the role of patience in strengthening self-regulation and explain the underpinning mechanism between patience and procrastination.

Abstract

This article describes a community service initiative aimed at developing learning communication competencies for early childhood and elementary school teachers in the context of strengthening tauhid-based education. The partners in this community service are Raudhatul Athfal (RA) and Sekolah Dasar Islam Terpadu (SDIT) Darussalam Selokerto, which operate under the auspices of the Darussalam Selokerto Foundation. RA and SDIT Darussalam Selokerto have a vision to educate a generation that is monotheistic, intelligent, and morally upright. Since their establishment, these schools have emphasized the importance of Islamic values education and the integration of these values into both religious and general subjects. However, there is a need for further development of teachers' communication competencies and a deeper understanding of the tauhid-based education concept. Based on the analysis of the partners' problems and needs, this community service activity was designed using a participatory empowerment method, consisting of a series of workshops and mentoring sessions with the following sub-themes: (1) The Urgency of Tauhid-Based Education and Exploration of Teachers' Perceptions, (2) The Concept of Tauhid-Based Education, (3) Learning Communication in Tauhid-Based Education, (4) Integration of Tauhid into the School Curriculum, (5) The Role of Teachers in Tauhid-Based Education, and (6) The Tauhid Curriculum for Educators. Post-activity evaluations indicated that participants perceived the program to have a positive impact on their knowledge and understanding of learning communication and the implementation of tauhid-based education.
