Abstract

Social caring can be interpreted as affection and attention to other people which can later be manifested in an appreciating, accepting, and helping behavior. The behavior is not automatically possessed by each individual. Instead, it should be learnt, understood, internalized, and implemented in daily life. This article aims at discussing the strategies to enhance students social caring through multicultural awareness in language learning. Social caring serves as character values which appreciates diversity. It needs to be internalized from the very early age so that each individual understands how to deal with diversity. One of the alternatives in supporting the implementation of social care character is through multicultural-based learning activities. Hopefully, this type of learning leads students to appreciate diversity.  Keywords: character, social caring,  multicultural-based activities

Abstract

Language competence can be achieved by developing students’ intelligences. However, the fact that students’ potentials and intelligences vary has often been ignored. Appropriate learning activities are therefore needed to help students optimize such intelligences.  This article aims at discussing how language teachers contribute to the enhancement of Multiple Intelligences in foreign language teaching, particularly in speaking classes. The paper also reviews the types of intelligences defined by Howard Gardner and proponents of this theory in terms of language teaching as well as exemplifies pedagogical methodologies by which students’ multiple inttelligence can be activated in speaking activities.

Abstract

Teaching language is not only a matter of delivering language materials to the learners (e.g., using various methods or media), but it is also about what is thought and what is understood by the teachers that might contribute indirectly in designing and delivering the materials. Those aspects are the manifestations of teachers’ knowledge about language. Teachers who have sufficient understanding on language will be able to conduct better practice of language teaching since they understand what they are teaching. It is then intriguing to discuss the roles of syntax for language teachers: what can teachers benefit from it? This paper aims at revisiting the importance of syntax for language teachers by looking at the nature of language and the nature of syntax. This paper reviews the available relevant literature. The result of discussion emphasizes the potentiality of syntax to equip teachers with adequate knowledge on language, language structure and how to cope with changes in language. Moreover, reading syntax research can enrich teachers’ knowledge. This knowledge can be of beneficial for teachers, for instance in designing the language content of teaching materials. These are not surprising since language teachers are teaching language; therefore, they should also consider language characteristics of the language they are teaching.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the experiences and perspectives of teachers in implementing the Kurikulum Merdeka, an independent curriculum movement in Indonesia. The study aims to understand how teachers navigate the challenges associated with the implementation process while preserving their professional identity. This research will employ a hermeneutic phenomenological approach which involves transcription, thematic analysis, and interpretation and meaning-making. The approach will provide a robust framework for exploring teachers’ lived experiences in relation to the implementation of the curriculum. The methodology involved in-depth interviews with the teachers who have been actively involved in the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka in their schools. The findings show the dynamic and dialogic responses of teachers to educational reforms like Kurikulum Merdeka. It applies Bakhtin's theory of dialogism to uncover themes and sub-themes in teachers' narratives. These themes include the adaptation of teaching roles and conflicts stemming from traditional training versus new approaches. Social interactions and support from colleagues, as well as changes in the student-teacher dynamic, are vital aspects. Challenges like letting go of control and finding a balance in guiding students are discussed, along with strategies for navigating these challenges. The discussion emphasizes the evolution of professional identity as a result of ongoing dialogues in response to educational changes.

Abstract

Reading is a foundational skill that students must master from the early stages of primary education. However, observations at SDN (Public Primary School) 22 Sulur Medan revealed that many first-grade students struggle with reading fluency and often confuse alphabet letters. To address this issue, this study aimed to develop Augmented Reality (AR)-based flashcards as an innovative learning tool to support beginner reading instruction. The research objectives include assessing the reading abilities of first-grade students at SDN 22 Sulur Medan, designing the AR-based flashcard media, and evaluating its feasibility. This study employed the ADDIE development model within the framework of research and development methodology. Data collection techniques included observations, expert validations (content, pedagogy, and media), as well as feedback from student and teacher questionnaires. The findings demonstrated high feasibility ratings for the AR-based flashcards: 88% for content validation, 83% for pedagogical validation, 91% for media validation, 95% for student responses, and 95% for teacher responses, resulting in an overall score of 90% in the "Very Feasible" category. These results indicate that the AR-based flashcards are an effective tool for enhancing reading skills in first-grade students and offer a promising alternative for early literacy education.
