Abstract

Intercultural apprehension can affect the adaptation process of BIPA learners while in Indonesia, but research on this topic is still very limited. This study aims to measure the level of intercultural anxiety and the factors that cause this type of anxiety in Thai students when communicating with Indonesian people who have cultural differences. The data collection was conducted using a questionnaire called PRICA (Personal Report of Intercultural Communication Apprehension) and interview guidelines. The results showed that 7.1% of students experienced high levels of intercultural apprehension, 64.2% of students experienced moderate levels of intercultural apprehension and 28.5% of students experienced low levels of intercultural apprehension. Language barriers, negative prejudice, and culture shock are the main factors that give rise to this anxiety. BIPA teachers and program organizers are expected to design learning activities that can involve Thai students and Indonesian students so that intercultural apprehension can be reduced.

Abstract

Indonesian diaspora children have different characteristics compared to foreign students in general. They have acquired Indonesian naturally in their families. This background makes them included in the category of learners of Indonesian as a heritage language. The teaching of Indonesian that is done to them also has special characteristics. Therefore, this study specifically focuses on the characteristics of teaching Indonesian as a heritage language for diaspora children by using a qualitative approach and descriptive analysis. The data obtained through in-depth interviews with three teachers were then codified and analyzed. Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that the teaching in the Indonesian language as a heritage language class for these children has four characteristics. First, the teaching uses the total physical response (TPR) method. Second, it focuses on teaching daily vocabulary. Third, it focuses on teaching daily language skills. Fourth, teaching is assisted by the role of parents. Suggestions and recommendations from the results of this study are intended for Indonesian language teachers and researchers.  Researchers should research more about the role of parents in learning Indonesian for diaspora children in the family. For Indonesian language teachers, it is recommended to focus on teaching daily vocabulary in everyday contexts using the TPR method. Keywords: heritage language, young learners, Indonesian diaspora, Indonesian language teaching

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the challenges faced by Thai international students when they first came to Indonesia to study Indonesian as a foreign language. There were nine Thai students studying in six different cities in Indonesia were recruited as participants. The thematic analysis revealed two major themes: academic challenges and technological issues. Both made it difficult for Thai students to master the Indonesian language effectively. The condition potentially hinders their academic success when studying in Indonesia. However, the researchers found that despite the language barrier, Thai students still tried to speak Indonesian with Indonesian students and residents. It indicates that Thai students in this study were highly determined, friendly, and open to new cultures. Furthermore, the researchers advise teachers and program organizers to pay attention to these challenges to maximize the learning output.

Abstract

This case study aims to describe the implementation of gamification in an online BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia for Foreign Speakers) class and to analyze the ability of Danish learners to pronounce Indonesian vocabulary. The study was conducted with six learners aged 9–12 years in an online BIPA class organized by the Embassy of Indonesia in Denmark. Reflective notes and observation guidelines were used as instruments to collect data. Thematic data analysis revealed that gamification using Wordwall was implemented through five types of games: (1) Complete The Word, (2) The Hidden Words, (3) The Pacman Game, (4) Word Puzzles, and (5) Sentence Puzzles. Meanwhile, learners made four types of pronunciation errors: (1) sound addition, (2) sound omission, (3) sound alteration, and (4) code-switching. Based on these findings, further research is needed to determine whether these pronunciation errors also occur when learners write the vocabulary. Comprehensive knowledge of this issue will provide deeper insights into how such errors occur, enabling teachers to develop strategies to prevent recurring mistakes.

Abstract

The limited number of studies on the creativity of Primary School Teacher Education (PGSD) students in designing contextual Indonesian language learning serves as the background for this research, given its significant implications for the quality of basic education, particularly in addressing learning loss and pedagogical gaps. The aim of this study is to examine the level of creativity among PGSD students in designing learning models that integrate digital media, socio-cultural contexts, and the needs of elementary school students. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. The sample consists of eight PGSD students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the thematic analysis model of Miles and Huberman. The findings show that 75% of the students were able to design self-directed learning modules, 62% integrated digital media such as Quizizz and Canva, and 50% combined them with conventional media such as puzzles and visual aids. These results support Johnson’s theory of contextual learning and Torrance’s theory of creativity. The main conclusion is that PGSD students’ pedagogical creativity develops through hands-on practice, flexible media selection, and an awareness of student characteristics. Theoretical implications include the proposal of a blended contextual learning model, while practical implications involve recommendations for Teacher Education Institutions (LPTKs) to strengthen digital literacy training and project-based curricula. Moreover, this study opens avenues for further research on the effectiveness of hybrid learning models in remote areas.
