Abstract

ABSTRACT Teaching materials play an important role in the teaching and learning process both for lecturers students. This study aimed at developing General English teaching materials based on native-accent listening materials as an authentic source for students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Pontianak. The method used in this research was the ADDIE development model by Dick, Carey and Carey (2009); analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. Data of this study were collected using questionnaires and interview. A total of 30 students who were representatives of 12 study programs at UM Pontianak participated as respondents. The results show that students were more interested in native accent-listening materials sourced from You Tube because it was considered more up-to-date. Students also tend to choose material with easy to difficult level of to enhance their vocabulary mastery, short conversation of listening audio (video) completed with ‘glossary study’ in each chapter of the module. In addition, the use of listening material sources was preferred in a ready-to-use form without having to download them. Data from the analysis of student questionnaires on the needs of the General English module indicates that the majority of students were more interested in integrated skills materials (listening, speaking, reading, writing) completed with descriptions and learning objectives and time allocation of each chapter, contained topics that are in accordance with the available time, presented with various practice questions and glossary study activities, presented in legible fonts and relevant visuals or pictures. In short. The module is expected to facilitate students with effective, motivating, and practical materials.

Abstract

This study examined the effects of the technology acceptance of augmented reality on attitude and self-efficacy in learning English and modelled the direct and indirect effects. It employed non-experimental, analytic survey research with structural equation modelling. Two hundred and fifty-seven participants completed the survey questionnaire. Data analysis used SmartPLS to examine the outer loading, validity and reliability, R square, path coefficients, specific indirect effects, total effects, and model fit. Structural equation modelling (SEM) showed that perceived usefulness has no significant effect on attitude and self-efficacy, while perceived ease of use has a significant effect on attitude but no significant effect on self-efficacy. Perceived enjoyment has a positive correlation with attitude and self-efficacy. This study provides empirical facts that support and contradict previous relevant studies on the technology acceptance on attitude and self-efficacy in using augmented reality technology for language learning. The results of the study also contribute ideas on how technology can be anchored not only from technological but also from cognitive and affective perspectives as well.

Abstract

Untuk keperluan kerja sama internasional, para guru Bahasa Inggris memiliki bekal ketrampilan berbahasa tetapi masih terkendala oleh keterbatasan dana dan kepercayaan diri. Artikel Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PKM) ini melaporkan upaya internasionalisasi dosen Bahasa Inggris Pontianak melalui konferensi internasional. Karena dilaksanakan pada masa Pandemi COVID-19, konferensi dilaksanakan secara daring. Kegiatan ini dijalankan dengan metode proyek melalui pendekatan partisipatoris dan kolaboratif yang melibatkan para dosen, universitas, asosiasi profesi dalam negeri, dan asosiasi profesi di luar negeri. Kegiatan konferensi diawali sosialisasi, penggalangan peserta, scaffolding, perencanaan, pengorganisasian, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi. Semua kegiatan tersebut dijalankan secara daring dengan memanfaatkan media sosial, website, surat elektronik, dan videoconference. Di samping meningkatkan kompetensi penyelenggaraan konferensi dan kompetensi berpresentasi, kegiatan ini dapat mengatasi keterbatasan dana.

Abstract

Kemampuan presentasi dalam Bahasa Inggris merupakan salah satu communicative functional skills yang penting dimiliki oleh mahasiswa. Di era kurikulum Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) saat ini, banyak kegiatan internasional yang bisa di ikuti oleh mahasiswa. Namun pada kenyataannya, masih banyak mahasiswa yang belum memiliki kemampuan dasar untuk melakukan presentasi dalam Bahasa Inggris. Kemampuan komunikatif Bahasa Inggris akan sangat berguna bagi mahasiswa untuk meningkatkan kemampuan kognitif, mengasah kemampuan berpikir kritis, menambah rasa percaya diri, dan mengembangkan kemampuan adaptasi atau life-skills. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan pengabdian ini dilakukan dengan memberikan pelatihan English for presentation yang berlangsung selama 2 hari yaitu pada tanggal 3-4 Oktober 2022 di Universitas Muhammadiyah Pontianak. Pelatihan ini memberikan materi teoritis presentasi yang efektif dalam Bahasa Inggris dengan melatih interpersonal dan communicative skills dari mahasiswa, berbicara dengan aksen dan bahasa tubuh untuk menjadi pribadi yang percaya diri melalui metode simulasi dan experiential learning.

Abstract

This research aimed at designing and developing the procedure of storytelling technique activities in teaching speaking narrative text. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Ambawang in the academic year 2020/2021. This research was development research which consists of three phases; analysis, design, and development. The result of the analysis in this research showed that the students lack vocabulary and have little time to get a chance to speak English. The result of this research was an instructional design of storytelling. The result of designing storytelling instruction is formed in a lesson plan of teaching speaking narrative text. The designed storytelling instruction consists of six sections: introduction, observing, guiding, practicing, assessing, and closing. It is recommended that the teacher use storytelling techniques to teach English especially in speaking skill

Abstract

The study aimed to examine the learners’ perception of the use of local-based digital storytelling on learning resilience and learning autonomy. Perceived ideas were purposively taken from 30 learners who experienced a local-based digital storytelling-making process in an English for Communication in Academic Settings class. The findings of the study revealed that learners perceived digital storytelling as highly motivating and useful for learning resilience and learning autonomy. They indicated a need for more local-based digital storytelling in their language learning, recognizing its value in understanding the necessity of resilience in overcoming adversities. Learners believe that digital storytelling practice improves their creativity, critical thinking, and information retention, hence strengthening the connections between real-life experiences and academic knowledge. The collaborative and participatory aspect of digital storytelling enhances students' self-learning and ownership of learning autonomy. Examining learners’ perceptions can be useful to articulate their ideas about the language learning process related to learning strategies, strengths and weaknesses to improve. It can also assist language educators to promote inclusivity in the classroom by providing insight into the individual qualities of learners.

Abstract

Dewasa ini job interview kerap kali dilakukan menggunakan bahasa Inggris meskipun jenis pekerjaan yang dilamar tidak dominan membutuhkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu, mahasiswa sebagai calon pengisi lapangan pekerjaan di berbagai bidang harus memiliki bekal yang cukup untuk menjalanai setiap tahapan seleksi pekerjaan, khususnya tahapan Interview dalam bahasa Inggris. English for Job Interview menggunakan metode simulasi merupakan pembekalan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris dalam merespon  pertanyaan yang diberikan dalam sesi interview pekerjaan. Tahapan dalam pelatihan ini meliputi application letter, CV, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) dalam job interview. Pada akhirnya peserta kegiatan pelatihan English for Job Interview harus dapat menunjukkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris yang dibuktikan pada aspek accuracy, pronunciation, intonation, expression. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan pengabdian bertema pelatihan Englih for Job Interview ini menjadi penting untuk dilaksanakan untuk membekali dan mempersiapkan mahasiswa UM Pontianak menghadapi dunia kerja.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the students’ interests and perceptions in learning simple past tense by using the TGT (Team Game Tournament) technique. The situation in the teaching-learning process at an Islamic Junior High School in Pontianak has shown that there are still many problems that must be addressed, concerning English grammar. The researcher has encountered several problems such as student’s reluctance to participate, lack of interest, motivation, and attention in the classroom. The researcher employed Classroom Action Research as a means to solve the problems. The findings presented information regarding the use of TGT that could serve as a beneficial alternative in teaching grammar, particularly the simple past tense. Furthermore, the information will provide the teacher with useful insights on ways to teach and to motivate their students in the classroom.

Abstract

In recent years, higher education institutions have faced challenges in the field of education. The impact of digital technology such as augmented reality increases the possibility of self -regulated learning. Therefore this study analyze the relationship between self-efficacy, attitude and self-regulated learning across cognition, motivation, behaviour, and context through augmented reality in reading for English as foreign language (EFL) learners. Data were collected from 213 undergraduate students in English for Specific Class (ESP) in an academic university in Indonesia. This study was used a non-experimental, analytic survey research design with SmartPLS. The study assessed the measurement model of the factor loadings, composite reliability, and convergent validity, and employed bootstrapping for p-values of the path coefficient. The findings of the study reported that self-efficacy has a statistically significant relationship with cognition, motivation, behaviour and context while attitude has a statistically positive relationship with motivation and context but not with cognition and behavior.

Abstract

Ecoprint merupakan teknik pewarnaan kain dan pencetakan motif dengan menggunakan bahan alam. Teknik ecoprint diperkenalkan kepada siswa Taman Kanak-Kanak karena pada usia 5-6 tahun anak sudah mulai dapat memahami materi dan instruksi guru secara berkala meskipun masih dengan bantuan guru dalam mengerjakan projek tersebut. Adapun tujuan dari kegiatan pengenalan ecoprint adalah memberikan pengetahuan tentang ecoprint dan keterampilan seni bagi siswa dalam memanfaatkan potensi lokal melalui bahan alam atau tanaman yang ada disekitar sekolah. Metode yang digunakan adalah ceramah, demonstrasi, praktik dan evaluasi.  Evaluasi menggunakan kuesioner dan pengamatan secara langsung pada produk ecoprint yang telah dibuat oleh siswa. Siswa telah mampu mencetak motif dan warna dari daun serta bunga di atas totebag canvas menghasilkan produk ecoprint sesuai dengan kreativitas masing-masing.
