Abstract

This article analyzes the  prospect of developing a virtual learning forum to help rural English teachers capacity building. The forum is considered important to provide opportunities for the teachers to communicate, to share ideas and experiences, and to discuss amongst themselves and with teachers in more developed regions as well as with experts. The study was conducted qualitatively in Kalimantan Barat (West Kalimantan) province, Indonesia. The data were collected from four districts through observation and interview. A three-level classification system in qualitative survey design that consisted of unidimensional description, multidimensional description, and explanation was used to analyze the data. The study revealed that internet connection, transportation infrastructure, government regulations, and teacher readiness were important factors that would help the rural teachers develop virtual learning forums. The suitable mode that could support the forum was an asynchronous discussion forum using open social media groups. The challenge that would possibly be difficult to solve was finding highly motivated teachers to initiate and to manage the forums. The study recommends that teachers and experts from a university can mentor the motivated teacher leaders in the first year.

This research, entitled “Correlation Between Vocabulary Mastery and Fluency in Speaking” was carried out to the fifth semester students of English Education Study Program. The population of this research is fifth semester students of English Education Study Program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty at Tanjungpura University with the sample size of 30. The result of data analysis revealed the correlational between both variable from the samples is showing the correlational coefficient (r) value of 0.19. This value showed vocabulary mastery has low correlation with fluency in speaking. The contribution of vocabulary mastery to fluency in speaking is 3.6% which is almost non-existent. The hypothesis was tested by comparing the r value with r table, with the degree of freedom (df = n-2) of 28 and 1% level of significance. The r value (0.19) is lower than r table (0.463). It means, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is rejected and null hypothesis (Ho) is accepted. With this research done, students should improve their speaking ability and remember more vocabularies to become a more and better speaker. The writer hopes this research may be beneficial to the readers and might resulting in newer research with different aspect and better concepts.

Abstract

Rural teachers often have difficulties to participate conventionally in professional development programs in towns. This article explains the possibility and challenge of developing an online e-learning program and forum to support rural English teacher capacity building. The research was conducted through a qualitative survey in four districts in two of fourteen counties in Kalimantan Barat province, Indonesia. The data were collected through interview and observation and were analyzed using a three-level classification system that consisted of unidimensional description, multidimensional description, and explanation. The research found that the government regulations, the transportation infrastructure, the internet connection, and the teacher readiness could support the online discussion forum. The possible design to support the forum was an asynchronous discussion forum in social media groups. The challenge was finding motivated and committed teachers to initiate and lead the forums. Based on the discussion and conclusion, the research recommends that external experts mentor the leaders in the first year. When the leaders are ready to manage the groups, the mentor can motivate the leaders to manage the groups autonomously and may collaborate with the external experts to conduct some relevant professional development programs.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the existence of the Indonesian verbs “berkata”, “bersabda”, and “berfirman” (to say, to state). The method of document study was executed to provide the data, namely the translation of the Holy Quran (2004). Although it is unfair to compare the language of Indonesia and the language of Java from a speech level point of view, this paper is simply meant to trace how the words of the language of Indonesia show its speech levels in its own way. The Indonesian verbs “berfirman”, “bersabda”, and “berkata” are used to describe the activity of ‘saying’ or ‘speaking’ of God (berfirman), the Prophet Muhammad (bersabda), and people in common (berkata). It is concluded here that there are speech levels in the language of Indonesia, but they are not to compare with the speech levels like in the language of Java, Bali, Madura, Sunda, and or Sasak of Lombok.

Abstract

It is important to announce that JELTIM has changed its article template. The previous template seemed a bit difficult for some authors to manage tables and figures in two-column pages. Now it is only one column and has been made easy to follow. We also changed the article’s organization, font, font size, header, footer, and authors’ affiliation section. To help ease writers who need to cite articles from this journal, we also provide “How to cite this article” section at the bottom of the first page of every article. Then, to introduce the authors more completely, we add a section of “Author’s Brief CV” at the bottom of every article’s last page. We keep the journal’s focus remains the same (innovations and materials in ELT) but the number of pages will slightly increase change into 120-130 per year. This issue (Vol. 2 No. 1) consists of five articles that form a package of innovation and materials in ELT.

Second, the architecture of the activities was easy to understand. Last, the problem and language contents were found inline with the curriculum that was being used by all senior high school nationwide. Before publishing them widely, a least one research is necessary to try-out EMPA in “real classrooms.” It is also important to note that the teacher that would use EMPA should understand the concept of problem-based learning and should learn the tricks beforehand.
