Abstract

This study aims to analyze the kiyai leadership model in developing the quality of boarding school education. A qualitative approach with an interpretive paradigm was used in this study. A case study was designed at Pondok Pesantren Khas Kempek Cirebon during the year 2022-2023. Primary and secondary data were collected through observation, documentation, and interviews. After that, the data were analyzed, which included information reduction and data validation. The results of this study show that Kiyai implements a transformative leadership model in four dimensions, namely Idealized Influence, Intellectual Stimulation, Individual Consideration, Inspirational Motivation. Efforts made by the Kyai to improve the quality of education by making changes to the boarding school education system, namely with a directed and modern curriculum. The results of this study provide important insights for kyai in particular and for pesantren education managers in general about how to optimize their leadership to improve the quality of education being implemented by their pesantren institutions. This study also shows that a transformative leadership model of kiyai is needed in moving boarding school educational institutions to produce quality education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the development of social competencies among pesantren teachers in shaping students' character in the digital era. This qualitative research was conducted at Al-Khoir Islamic Boarding School in Karawang, involving 10 teachers and 15 students. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analysis, and analyzed using a thematic analysis framework based on the work of Miles and Huberman. The findings show that teachers at Al-Khoir demonstrate social competence through role modeling, empathetic communication, and the instilling of moral values in daily routines. However, there are challenges in digital literacy, as teachers struggle to integrate digital tools into their teaching due to limited resources and inadequate training. This gap in digital competence is influenced by the pesantren’s traditional values and leadership style, which prioritize religious education over technological integration. These findings contribute to the literature on teacher social competence and character education by highlighting the importance of enhancing digital competencies in teachers. The study offers practical recommendations for integrating digital literacy training into professional development programs at pesantren, enabling teachers to navigate the digital era more effectively and enhance their character-building efforts. Furthermore, this research offers valuable insights for both theory and practice, suggesting that strengthening digital literacy in teacher training programs is crucial for preparing educators to effectively navigate the challenges of the digital age while promoting character development in students.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital disruption has forced Islamic educational institutions to transform their learning management systems while maintaining spiritual values. This qualitative case study aims to analyze the patterns of innovation in Islamic Education learning management at SDIT Tahfizh Qur'an Al-Jabar Karawang. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the principal, teachers, and education staff, participant observation over six months, and document analysis, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. The findings demonstrate systematic innovation across three domains: planning that integrates digital tools with students’ Qur’anic memorization levels and characteristics; implementation that combines conventional methods with interactive digital media, resulting in an 85% increase in student motivation; and evaluation through application-based assessments that achieve 94% data accuracy while monitoring both spiritual and academic competencies. This study reveals that technology integration does not erode Islamic values but instead creates a balanced “value-based technological moderation” model. The scientific novelty of this research lies in presenting an empirically grounded, replicable framework of Islamic learning management that harmoniously combines digital innovation with tahfizh-based spiritual formation in an elementary school setting. Theoretically, it bridges innovation theory, values-based management, and religious moderation; practically, it provides a concrete reference for other Islamic schools navigating digital transformation without losing their religious identity.
