Abstract

Abstract

Abstract Aswaja is the dominant Islamic sect in the world level, especially in Indonesia. This dominant position necessitates Aswaja's moderate, tolerant and inclusive attitude towards minorities, such as "splinter" Islamic ideas and movements. Unfortunetly, Aswaja's attitude towards these minor entities tends to be exclucive, even persecutive, as proven by the coercive elimination of the Shiite and Ahmadiyah sects. Through the MUI, this coercive elimination is becoming stronger, as evidenced by a series of physical attacks against these two groups and other groups deemed heretical. This attack is contraproductive to moderation as Aswaja's own doctrine as well as the character of national and state life. On that basis, I will elaborate on Gus Dur's thoughts about hereticy and how to respond it by ellaborating on the verses of the Qur'an along with the preaching verses in Q.S. al-Naḥl [16]: 125 uses Syaḥrūr ḥudūd theory. For this reason, this article will answer two problem formulations. First, what is the Qur'an conception about hereticy? Second, how does Gusdurian's preaching formula address other "deviant" groups? Regarding the first question, the article – by basing itself on the intepretation of Sunni scholars – finds that the deviant version of the Qur'an is aimed at non-Sunni groups. However, the Qur'an proposes three models of da'wah, none of which justifies violence either at the level of discourse, let alone physically. On the other hand, we must place deviant groups as dialogue partners, non an object of exclution and persecution. Keywords: Aswaja, Gus Dur, Da'wah, Hereticy, Tolerance

Abstract

Abstract The statement says that the hijab was an obstacle to women's development during colonialism in Egypt sparked a long discussion about the wearing of the hijab at that time, especially after Qasim Amin conveyed it in his book entitled Tahrīr al-Mar'ah (1899). On the other hand, the hijab also paved the way for the emergence of feminist discourse among Egyptian society. This article discusses the hijab discourse in interpretation (tafsīr) in Egypt after the controversy caused by the publication of Qasim Amin's book. This research shows that there are two conflicting tendencies of thinking about women, especially in the wearing of hijab. The first group thinks that the hijab is a barrier to women's development. While the second group considers the hijab is not a determining factor for women's progress. This tendency has genealogical roots to imperialism in Egypt. Using Miriam Cooke's theory of feminism which does not only refer to feminist actions and activism, but also thoughts and seeks to change perceptions of women's social roles and responsibilities, this article analyse at how the hijab discourse in two interpretations published after Tahrīr al-Mar'ah, each written by an Egyptian feminist woman. Focusing on two tafsir, namely al-Sufūr wa al-Hijāb written by Nazirah Zainuddin (1928) and Nazarāt fī Kitābillah written by Zaynab Ghazali (1994), this article elaborates on the verses of the hijab which are interpreted in these two books and sees that – to borrow Amina Wadud's term – prior text cannot be separated from the mufassir. This article concludes that the interpretation carried out by the two women bring the ideology of the feminist groups of the two interpreters, namely the Egyptian Feminist Union (EFU) and the Muslim Ladies Association (MLA). In a broader scope, this also cannot be separated from the history of British imperialism in Egypt, along with the discourse of feminism brought by the imperialists. Abstract

An assumption, that al-Quran is in accord with every era and place, has been proven by some researchers, thinkers, and interpreters, acknowledging that the al-Quran is in accordance with the development of modern knowledge/science. Loads of discovered findings lately have been written in al-Quran 14 centuries ago. Among those researchers, thinkers, and interpreters are Dr. Zakir Naik and Dr. Maurice Bucaille, proving it through their research and interpreting results on al-Quran and science. This research is meant to dig three things up: first, how is the interpretation of both mentioned researchers concerning kauniyah verses? Second, how suitable are their interpretations for the al-Quran interpreting principles? This research uses a comparative method, analyzing the foremost works of both researchers: “The Bible, The Qur’an, and Science” by Dr. Maurice Bucaille and several speeches as well as the scientific writings made by Dr. Zakir Naik. The used theoretical approach is scientific interpretation theory, analyzing how kauniyah verses are interpreted in modern science framework. The research findings aver that Dr. Maurice Bucaile emphasizes the scientific validity of al-Quran by drawing attention to the verses fitting the modern findings in biology and genetics; besides, Dr. Zakir Naik shows apologetic aspects in maintaining al-Quran righteousness through his scientific debate with non-Moslem view. It could be understood, in both interpretations of analyzing kauniyah verses, that the method and the principles they use are mostly according to the principles by the former ulama of exegesis, despite that there are some they don’t use; however, still, it can be said that both researchers are in the way how an interpreter should be.

Abstract

Both al-Quran and hadits are considered capable of being the guidance for the various problems of humans, including dietary habits. In spite of the fact that the term” vegetarian” is inexplicitly mentioned in al-Quran, the basic concepts concerning health and the welfare of the body are reflected within lots of verses. Regarding vegetarian dietary habits are still considered ineffective by some people due to a lack of deep understanding, this comprehension needs further research. This research aims to discuss the vegetarian concept from the perspective of al-Quran as the rahmatan lil 'alamin religion teaches people about welfare life. This research is a literature review with interpretative content analysis as a data analysis method to know the social events in accord with the interpretation of verses concerning vegetarianism; hence, this research can answer the problems well. This research is aimed to analyze the interpretations of ulama concerning verses about vegetarianism. From this research, it is concluded that instead of making vegetarian dietary habits an obligation, al-Quran regards it as an advisable choice for health. Vegetarians think that the reason for health is relevant and in accord with Islamic values, all the more that health is significant to support daily life activity. This research also found that some vegetarian dietary habits need to be mulled over in the context of al-Quran and to be in accordance with Islamic values.
