Abstract

Abstract Female figures position in a Sundanese novel entitled Sandekala is in accordance with the concept of docile bodies which is stated by Michael. In general, the novel tends to present obedient women. The female figures are disclosed passively and gagged with the result that oppression undergone is blurred due to less resistance. Some argument prompt this research, particularly in relation to women issue. The other supporting issue is concerned with women represented in Sundanese social condition and Sundanese women attitude who is willing to discharge from being inferior. The most interesting of the novel is when the main character named Dewi, is accentuated. She is depicted as a college student and an activist who struggles similarly as men do. The presence of Dewi is peculiar in the novel. Since she is portrayed differently from other female characters. The novel exposes the character of Dewi as a symbol of women resistance.Key words:  female, oppression, resistance

Abstract

Abstract:The present research aims at  describing  how African feminist perspectives features  in Ken Bugul’s  autobiographical work entitling  Riwan ou Le Chemin du Sable (1999). In the paper, the feminist perspective is shown through the eyes of the narrator as Senegalese women when faced with the question of polygamy. The analysis uses the theory of feminism that contextual issues faced by women in Senegal, mainly presented by Hashim and D’Almeida and by applying the approach of autobiographical approach narrathology.  I argue that the feminism perspective in the Bugul’s works  is a familliasm concept that refers to the voicing solidarity among Senegal’s women  and the active involvement of men in order to create sustainability and a well-being  family.

Abstract

Abstract:Orwell made his life experiences as a part of his works and used them to convey a variety of his ideas. Through his novel entitling  Burmese Days and his essay called Shooting an Elephant, both of them were related to, Orwell wrote his ideas about discourse of colonialism in the British colony in Burma. A peculiar issue in Orwell’s work is the gender issue. Therefore, this study shows masculinity of white men, and the factors motivating or obstructing such masculinity. In order to analyze these issues, this study applies George Mosse’s (1996), Homi K. Bhabha’s (1995) and Mrinalini Sinha’s (1995) approach on masculinity in postcolonial discourse. Based on the analy- sis, this study is to provide the assumption that masculinity of white men in the British colony in Burma, particularly Kyauktada, was caused by  their concept of superiority and inferiority.

Abstract

Abstract: Music was mostly taken as a theme in many works written by Jelinek.  In the Die Klavierspielerin novel  published in 1983, Jelinek took theme of music.
