Abstract

Abstract This paper examines female subjectivity contained in the short-story "Cenana" by Oka Rusmini. This short story is part of a collection of short-stories "Sagra" which tells the efforts of female protagonists out of oppression patriarchal system. The method used in this research is feminist study. This study is based on the female subjectivity approach of Beauvoir reinterpreted by Tori Moi. The short-story of "Cenana" shows womens dominant issues in the depiction of womens experiences in an attempt to challenge the patriarchal system. The results of the analysis show that the female protagonist character is presented as a subjectivity that plays the body as an important role in its relation to male characters within the project of heterosexuality.Keyword: Oka Rusmini, female subjectivity, body, short-story.

Abstract

This research described Sundanese identity on “Abah jeung Laptop” by Hikmat Nugraha. The research analised narrative struckture and setting on the short story. This study aimed to describe how the representasion of Sundanese identity on contemporary literature. This research used qualitative method and literature study for collecting the data. In analyzing the data, the researcher used narrative struckture method by Mieke Bal to describe how narrator and fokalisator on the short story affected how Sundanese identity be representasion on this story. The analysis showed the representasion of Sundanese identityon the actors on story changed because of modernize. The struggle which representing by the actors showed how shifting of identities was very difficult but identities always changed because of history and cultures change.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Popular culture that rises with industrialization influences the production of film in Indonesia. One of genres of Indonesia’s film is soap opera. Soap opera has two sides, the first side as market com- modity and the second side as popular art, whichcategorized itself as kitsch. As producing their pro- duct, soap opera has to see trough the background of its society. This research used qualitative method. The research resultsmost of Indonesian are Malaya that have colonized by Caucasian and Mongolian before 1945 and after that. It causes effect of fantasies that create the stereotype about Caucasian and Mongolian appearances. Stereotype makes Malaya have fetishism about Caucasian and Mongolian’s appearance. Director of soap opera uses this kind of fetishism as appeal to audiences in Indonesia. Displaying the racial half-bred of body of actress and actor in soap opera is become one of marketing strategy to promote soap opera. This is why half-breed actress and actor always get the important role in Indonesian soap opera. Keywords: soap opera, kitsch, race, fetishism    ABSTRAK Budaya populer yang tumbuh seiring dengan industrialisasi memengaruhi produksi per- filman di Indonesia. Salah satu genre perfilman di Indonesia adalah sinetron. Sinetron yang di- kategorikan sebagai produk seni kitsch memiliki dua kriteria yaitu sebagai komoditi seni yang populer dan sebagai komoditi dagang yang menghasilkan keuntungan ekonomis. Sebagai se- buah produk seni kitsch yang merupakan dasar pembuatan karyanya adalah selera masyarakat kebanyakan maka sinetron harus jeli dalam melihat keadaan dan latar belakang masyarakat. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Hasil penelitian ini menggambarkan masyara- kat Indonesia yang merupakan ras Melayu telah dijajah oleh ras Kaukasoid dan Mongoloid sebelum tahun 1945 dan setelahnya. Efek dari penjajahan ini adalah ras Melayu telah ditanami fantasi yang menjadi stereotip mengenai ras Kaukasoid dan Mongoloid yang berakhir dengan fetisisme. Fetisisme ini dijadikan sebagai strategi pemasaran oleh produser dan sutradara un- tuk menarik antusiasme calon penonton sinetron. Caranya dengan menampilkan aktor dan aktris Melayu keturunan Kaukasoid dan Mongoloid sebagai pemeran utama. Kata kunci: sinetron, seni kitsch, ras, fetisisme

Abstract

Penelitian ini membicarakan isu perempuan dan pendidikan yang ditampilkan dalam puisi “Tjoemboean” yang terbit dalam surat kabar Perempoean Bergerak (1919) dan “Adjakan (Doenia Istri)” yang terbit dalam surat kabar Bintang Karo (1931). Kedua puisi dalam surat kabar tersebut diedarkan di wilayah Sumatera bagian Utara yang ketika itu meliputi Sumatera Utara dan Aceh. Melalui analisis menggunakan pandangan Brooks (1967) dan pengkajian isu dengan pemikiran Beauvoir (2003) serta Wollstonecraft (2014), penelitian ini menemukan bahwa puisi “Tjoemboean” dan “Adjakan” dijadikan sebagai alat artikulasi kritis perempuan terhadap isu-isu yang berkenaan dengan kehidupannya. Secara khusus, kedua puisi tersebut menampilkan bahwa pendidikan perempuan memiliki relasi yang kuat dengan persoalan harta, orang tua, dan cinta. Pendidikan juga digambarkan sebagai sarana untuk memperbaiki kualitas diri perempuan agar terbebas dari subordinasi gender.AbstrakThis research examines how issues of education and women are presented in the poem “Tjoemboean” published in the newspaper “Perempuan Bergerak” (1919) and “Adjakan” (Doenia Istri)” published in the newspaper “Bintang Karo” (1931). Both newspapers were printed and published in Northern Sumatera which for that moment regionally covered North Sumatera and Aceh. Through analysis of Brooks’ theory (1967), issues study of Beauvoir’s thought (2003), and Wollstonecraft’s (2014), the research finds that “Tjoemboean” and “Adjakan” serve as a means of women’s critical articulation of issues concerning their lives. Both poems specifically represent that the issue of women’s education is strongly connected to the issues of wealth, parents, and love. Education is also described as a medium to reform the quality of women’s selves;hence, they are free of gender subordination.

Abstract

This paper investigates the notion ageing femininity as it is performed within the frame of celebrity culture which privileges youthfulness in beauty and body image. It focuses on the issues of age, the process of ageing, the significance of ageing, the impact of ageing as part of the construction of celebrity identity and femininity. Age[ing] is an important context that female celebrities need to negotiate and embrace the ways in which cultural values need to be considered as well. Looking into the portrayal of the auto/biographical subjects and the visual images used, the paper argues that celebrities negotiate, transform and extend their forms of femininity as they age. Both auto/biographies present their auto/biographical subjects to show the construction of appealing ageing celebrity femininities that are closely linked to the characteristics of the Third Agers, being fit, fashionable, functional and flexible.

Abstract

Tulisan ini mengkaji tentang politik seksualitas  Nazi yang terdapat dalam novel Der Vorleser karya Bernhard Schlink. Teks novel ini menunjukkan adanya keterkaitan antara seksualitas dan politik. Kajian ini dilandasi oleh teori Foucault yang membahas sejarah seksualitas dan kaitannya dengan negara, serta teori mengenai politik seksualitas Nazi di Jerman yang dikemukakan Herzog. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa di dalam novel tersebut terdapat gambaran politik seksualitas Nazi, seperti pelarangan aktivitas seksual remaja, sakralisasi aktivitas seksual, pengokohan identitas dan peran gender, serta pelarangan hubungan di luar pernikahan. Selain itu, hasil analisis juga menunjukkan bahwa politik seksualitas ini diterapkan oleh pemerintah Nazi dengan tujuan untuk menjaga kemurnian ras bangsa Jerman serta menunjukkan superioritas bangsa Jerman terhadap bangsa lain.Abstract:This paper examines Nazi’s politics of sexuality in the Bernhard Schlink’s novel “Der Vorleser”. The novel shows that there is a relation between sexuality and politics.  This study uses Foucault’s theory on sexuality in relation with the state as well as Herzog’s theory on Nazi’s politic of sexuality. The result of the research show that in the novel there are descriptions of Nazi’s politics of sexuality, such as the prohibition on teenage sexuality, the sacralization of sexual activity, the strengthening of identity and gender roles, and the prohibition of premarital sex. Furthermore, the results of the analysis reveal that the sexuality politics is applied by the Nazi government in order to maintain the purity of the German race and show German supremacy over other nations.

Abstract

Paper ini mendiskusikan femininitas di dalam auto/biografi selebritas transeksual “Aku Perempuan: Jalan Berliku Seorang Dorce Gamalama” (2005). Auto/biografi ini diterbitkan tahun 2005. Auto/biografi bukan sekadar merayakan karirnya tetapi yang lebih penting lagi adalah untuk menegaskan identitas dirinya sebagai perempuan. Saya berargumentasi bahwa peran feminine yang dituntut dari selebritas perempuan dapat juga di[per]tunjukkan oleh seorang transeksual seperti Dorce Gamalama tetapi dengan tuntutan ditampilkannya bentuk femininitas yang lebih meyakinkan dibandingkan yang dituntut dari selebritas yang secara biologis dilahirkan perempuan. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan membaca secara dekat, mencermati struktur auto/biografi serta wacana yang ditampilkan. Analisis saya atas auto/biografi Dorce Gamalama ini menunjukkan bahwa persoalan makna perempuan sejati muncul berulang sejalan dengan perjuangan subjek auto/biografis dalam mengklaim identitas feminine yang otentik melalui tubuh, seksualitas dan peran femininnya sebagai ibu dan istri. Penegasan mengenai identitas sebagai perempuan sejati sangat erat dikaitkan dengan Islam sebagai kerangka beragama lokal di Indonesia.Abstract:  This paper examines femininity in the auto/biography of a transsexual celebrity, “Aku Perempuan: Jalan Berliku Seorang Dorce Gamalama” (2005). Her auto/biography was published in 2005. The auto/biography is not so much about celebrating her career as it is about endorsing her womanhood. I argue that these feminine roles expected of female celebrities can be performed by a transsexual (M2F) person as Dorce Gamalama but with the need to create a more convincing form of femininity than is required of a “natural” female celebrity. This research is conducted by reading the text closely, paying attention to the structure and the discourse presented. My examination of Dorce’s auto/biography shows that this question about being a real woman recurs as the auto/biographical subject struggles to claim an authentic feminine identity through her body and sexuality as well as through the feminine roles of motherhood and wifehood. This assertion of being a real woman is tightly connected to Islam as Indonesian local religious frame.

Abstract

Tulisan ini mengkaji unsur-unsur gotik yang terdapat dalam novel Penunggu Jenazah karya Abdullah Harahap. Novel yang dikaji menunjukkan keterkaitan  unsur-unsur gotik sebagai pembangun cerita, yaitu hal-hal supernatural, bentuk-bentuk transgresi, latar yang menyeramkan, bentuk-bentuk monstrositas, excess dan fetis. Kajian ini dilandasi dengan menggunakan teori gotik. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa unsur gotik dalam novel Penunggu Jenazah saling tumpang tindih. Hal-hal supernatural digunakan sebagai sumber konflik dan bentuk transgresi. Transgresi sebagai unsur gotik menggunakan pelanggaran terhadap tabu yang melibatkan transgresi terhadap seksualitas, tubuh, dan kematian. Latar yang menyeramkan, bentuk-bentuk monstrositas dan excess dihadirkan sebagai unsur gotik yang menggangu tatanan norma dan normalitas. Fetis yang muncul dalam Penunggu Jenazah adalah fetis terhadap tubuh perempuan dengan kecenderungan sadomasokis. Novel disajikan dengan mencampurkan semua unsur gotik dengan unsur supernatural, transgresi dan monstrositas sebagai unsur gotik yang dominan. Oleh sebab itu, penelitian ini saya fokuskan untuk mengungkap cara gotik ditampilkan dalam karya Harahap.Abstract: This paper examines the gothic elements in the novel entitled Penunggu Jenazah written by Abdullah Harahap. The novel shows that the gothic elements are supernatural, forms of transgression, scary setting, forms of monstrosity, excess and fetish. This study uses gothic theories. Furthermore, the results of the analysis also show that the gothic elements are overlapping. Transgression as the gothic element is using violation of taboo of sexuality, body and death. The scary setting, the forms of monstrosity and excess are representing to disturb norms and normality. The fetish in the Penunggu Jenazah novel is the fetish of a woman body with a tendency to sadomasochism. Gothic is represented by blending all gothic elements with the supernatural, transgression and monstrosity as the majority elements. Moreover, this study is focused on the way gothic represented.

Abstract

Penelitian ini ditujukan untuk mendeskripsikan bagaimana perspektif feminis Afrika ditampilkan dalam karya autobiografis Ken Bugul yang berjudul Riwan ou Le Chemin du Sable (1999). Dalam karya itu, perspektif feminis  ditampilkan melalui kacamata narator sebagai perempuan Senegal ketika dihadapkan pada persoalan poligami. Analisis menggunakan teori feminisme yang kontekstual dengan isu yang dihadapi perempuan di Senegal, terutama yang dipaparkan oleh Hashim dan D’Almeida serta pendekatan naratologi autobiografis. Saya berargumentasi bahwa perspektif feminisme dalam karya Bugul itu adalah konsep famillisme yang merujuk pada penyuaraan rasa solidaritas antarperempuan Senegal dan keterlibatan aktif laki-laki demi terciptanya keberlangsungan dan kesejahteraan sebuah keluarga.Abstract:The present research aims at  describing  how African feminist perspectives features  in Ken Bugul’s  autobiographical work entitling  Riwan ou Le Chemin du Sable (1999). In the paper, the feminist perspective is shown through the eyes of the narrator as Senegalese women when faced with the question of polygamy. The analysis uses the theory of feminism that contextual issues faced by women in Senegal, mainly presented by Hashim and D’Almeida and by applying the approach of autobiographical approach narrathology.  I argue that the feminism perspective in the Bugul’s works  is a familliasm concept that refers to the voicing solidarity among Senegal’s women  and the active involvement of men in order to create sustainability and a well-being  family.
