Abstract

This research entitle code mixing phenomenon in micro teaching class by EFL students in giving suggestion to the trainee: a sociolinguistics study is aimed to describe the form of code mixing, the position of code mixing in a sentence, the language which is mixed, and the reason of mixing a code. This research is qualitative research. In this research, the writer uses recording method and writing technique in collecting the data. To analyze the data, the writer uses description technique. The result of the research shows that code mixing phenomenon occurs in the form of words, phrases, and sentences. The positions of code mixing are in the beginning, middle, and in the end of the sentence. The language which is mixed by the observers is Indonesian, and there are three reasons of mixing a code, those are to express the emotion, to emphasize the important point of the suggestion, and to have a sense of humor.

Abstract

This scientific writing entitle a contrastive study of positivism and pascapositivism in research paradigm is aimed to describe the positivism inpositivism era, to describe the criticize towards the positivism, to describe pascapositivism in pascapositivism era, and the differences betweenpositivism and pascapositivism in research paradigm. Based on the difference characteristics between positivism and pascapositivism, this scientific writing gives the benefit for the researcher to understand deeply about the characteristics of qualitative research which is very different from thequantitative. An understanding of this paradigm will lead the researcher to understand the characteristic of a research and use suitable approach inconducting a research.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to know the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and grammar mastery, the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their paragraph writing ability, the correlation between students’ grammar mastery and their paragraph writing ability, and the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and grammar mastery in their paragraph writing ability.In taking the sample of the research, the writer used Cluster Random Sampling Technique because the population is homogeneous.The population of the research was 334 students which consis of 9 classes. It was taken from the students of the second semester of the eighth class at Junior High School 8 of Bandar Lampung in 2012/2013. In collecting the data, the writer used an objective test that is multiple choice, consisted of 50 items for vocabulary and 40 items for grammar test, while for the writing the students were asked to make a composition based on the topic given. To analyze the data of the research the writer used multiple correlation.The result of the research showed that r-count = 0.8 is higher than r-table = 0.312. It means that there is a significant multiple correlation between students’ vocabulary and grammar mastery in their paragraph writing ability. So, the hypothesis is accepted.

Abstract

This research entitled A Study on Grammatical Errors in English Sentences Written by the Second Grade Students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Prambanan is intended to find out the grammatical errors made by the second grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Prambanan and to find out the highest frequency of grammatical errors made by the students.This research is qualitative research. The object of this research is grammatical errors in English sentences. In collecting the data, the researcher uses testing technique. She gives the students some exercises, collects the students‟ exercises, and puts the exercises into a research data file. In analyzing the data, the researcher applies descriptive qualitative method. The researcher reads the students‟ English sentences. She observes the data carefully to find out grammatical errors. She takes note on the grammatical errors and then classifies and tabulates them based on the kinds of grammatical errors.The result of the study shows that the grammatical errors found in the students‟ sentences deal with omission errors, addition errors, misformation errors, and misordering errors. The highest frequency of grammatical errors lies on the use of be form.

Abstract

This research entitled “Slang Remaja „Ghana‟ di Kota Kepahiang Propoinsi Bengkulu (Suatu Kajian Sosiolinguistik)” aimed to describe the slang expression form in Ghana community, to describe the forming of slang in Ghana community, to describe semantic meaning relation of slang in Ghana community, and to describe the function of using slang in Ghana community.This research is sociolinguistic research. In collecting the data, the researcher used listening method with recording technique, and interviewing method with noting technique. In analyzing the data, the researcher used correlation and distribution method. The result of the research is delivered informally.The result of the research showed that slang in Ghana community is in the form of word and phrase. The form of word is divided into five categories; those are noun, verb, adjective, pronoun, and numerals. Besides, the form of word is also divided into derivational word that includes reduplication. Slang in the form of phrase is divided into two categories; those are noun phrase and adjective phrase. There are three types of forming slang in Ghana community, (1) the forming of slang without any changed from the original words, (2) the forming of slang by using abbreviation, and (3) the forming of slang by using new words. The semantic meaning relation of slang in Ghana community is divided into five semantic meaning; those are synonymy, homonymy, polysemy, metaphor, and unidentified meaning of slang. There are five functions of using slang in Ghana community, (1) the using of slang for close relationship, (2) the using of slang for politeness or euphemism, (3) the using of slang for secrecy, (4) the using of slang for allusion and (5) the using of slang to express the feeling.

Abstract

The researchers decided to implement Partner Reading Strategy in this research because it is an effective strategy for improving the students’ reading comprehension.The students worked together to read, analyze, and discuss the text assigned in this cooperative learning strategy. This research aimed to help the students of the VIII C class of MTs N 1 Lampung Tengah improve their reading comprehension using the Partner Reading Strategy and identify their engagement in learning activities. This research used a Classroom Action Research method as research design. Partner Reading Strategy is independent variable and students’ reading comprehension is dependent variable. The subject of this research were 31 students, consisted eleven (11) male students and twenty (20) female students. The researchers used some instruments to assess students' reading comprehension that consist of formative test and summative test. In collecting the data, the writers used non-tests, including interviews, observation sheets, questionnaires, and field notes. The improvement of students' reading comprehension can be concluded from the improvement of the mean score of pre-test, formative test, and summative test. The summative test was given in the last meeting of each cycle. The result shows that using the Partner Reading Strategy successfully improved students’ reading comprehension. Moreover, students’ engagement played an influential role and impacted their learning outcomes. Implementing a Partner Reading Strategy can make students be involved in the educational activity and have a high level of engagement so that they can earn high learning outcomes.

Abstract

This research entitle English foreign language learners kinesics on teaching performance aims to mention and to describe the forms and the function of kinesics used by EFL learners on teaching performance, and to describe the importance of kinesics in teaching activity. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The data of the research are taken from EFL learners’ teaching performance on sixth semester at STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung. The researcher observes the learners’ kinesics in teaching activity by using observing method and noting technique. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses description method. The result shows that there are twenty kinds of kinesics acted by the trainee, those are sitting in relaxing, arms crossed in front of the chest, standing in relaxing, walking around the class, checking the time, stroking the chin or beard, smile, happily surprised, wrinkle forehead, nodding head, shaking head, thumbs up, pointing finger, counting hand, waving hand, looking up, eye following, squinting, look in eye and breaking or making eye contact. Abstract

Learning in the era of disruption is directed at using technology optimally, and learning is directed to have critical thinking skills. Directed learning has critical thinking skills that make it difficult for students to understand the material, which causes student learning achievement to be not optimal. The teaching carried out has not been carried out innovatively due to the teacher's limitations, technological capabilities, and media. So far, learning has only conventionally. This makes students' interest in learning less and less because it is difficult to understand the material. This study aimed to determine the use of problem-based digital comics on learning achievement and critical thinking skills. The method used is a literature review. The study results show that problem-based digital comics in the era of disruption can develop critical thinking skills and improve learning achievement.

Abstract

This research is intended to know the kinds and classification of speech acts and the politeness implication in teaching and learning activities. The subject of this research was the sixth-semester EFL learners of STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung. The object of this research was speech acts used by EFL learners. The researcher used the observation technique combined with noting technique in collecting the data. In this research, the researcher used the qualitative multiple study. The result of the study showed that speech acts used by EFL learners were direct and indirect speech acts. The speech acts were classified into the assertive, commissive, directive, and expressive. The politeness strategy acted by EFL learning included positive and negative politeness. The use of positive politeness creates a closeness among the teacher and the students, creates a pleasant classroom atmosphere, and increases the students’ motivation. Meanwhile, the use of negative politeness reduces amount degree of friendliness among the students and the teacher and creates a formal learning situation. Theoretically, this research has implications for the development of scientific insights about pragmatics, especially speech acts, and practically it gives implication to EFL teachers and students in understanding, analyzing, and interpreting the use of speech acts in communication.
