Abstract

Background: Emesis gravidarum is one of the most common complaints experienced by pregnant women during the first trimester and may affect maternal nutritional status, daily activities, and quality of life. Aromatherapy is a non-pharmacological intervention that is considered safe and easy to apply for reducing nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Purpose: To determine the effectiveness of peppermint and chamomile aromatherapy in reducing emesis gravidarum in first-trimester pregnant women. Method: This quasi-experimental study used a two-group pretest–posttest design. Forty first-trimester pregnant women with mild nausea and vomiting were assigned to peppermint aromatherapy and chamomile aromatherapy groups. Nausea and vomiting were measured using the Pregnancy-Unique Quantification of Emesis and Nausea questionnaire. Data were analyzed using paired-samples t-tests and independent-samples t-tests. Results: The mean nausea and vomiting score in the peppermint group decreased from 5.55±0.686 to 3.15±0.366 (p < 0.001). In the chamomile group, the mean score decreased from 5.60±0.681 to 3.25±0.444 (p < 0.001). Independent-samples t-test showed a significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.001), indicating that peppermint aromatherapy was more effective than chamomile aromatherapy. Conclusion: Both peppermint and chamomile aromatherapy effectively reduced nausea and vomiting in first-trimester pregnant women, with peppermint showing greater effectiveness. Suggestion: Peppermint aromatherapy may be recommended as a complementary non-pharmacological intervention for managing emesis gravidarum in antenatal care services.

Abstract

Breast milk (ASI) is the most complete and ideal source of nutrition for infants, providing all essential nutrients required for optimal growth and development. However, many breastfeeding mothers experience difficulties in milk production, leading to failure in exclusive breastfeeding. One natural approach to enhance breast milk production is through the consumption of Sauropus androgynus (katuk leaves) and Carica papaya (papaya leaves), both known for their lactagogue properties. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Sauropus androgynus and Carica papaya in increasing breast milk production among breastfeeding mothers at Kalibunder Public Health Center in 2025. The research employed a qualitative method with a case study design involving two breastfeeding mothers experiencing low milk production. The intervention was conducted for seven days by administering decoctions of 50 grams of katuk leaves and papaya leaves boiled in 300 ml of water, consumed twice daily. The results showed an increase in breast milk volume in both interventions. Sauropus androgynus increased milk volume from 15 ml to 60 ml, while Carica papaya increased it from 20 ml to 60 ml. There was a 5 ml difference between the two interventions, with Carica papaya proving to be more effective in enhancing breast milk production. Therefore, Carica papaya can be considered an effective natural alternative to help breastfeeding mothers improve their milk supply.

Abstract

Breastfeeding is a natural process that occurs after childbirth, in which mothers provide the best nutritional intake for their infants through breast milk (ASI). Efforts to overcome insufficient breast milk production can be carried out through complementary and non-pharmacological approaches, such as oxytocin massage and the consumption of Moringa leaves. Oxytocin massage is a non-pharmacological method designed to stimulate the production of the hormone oxytocin in breastfeeding and postpartum mothers. This hormone plays an important role in the "let-down reflex," which triggers the contraction of smooth muscles surrounding the mammary glands, thereby facilitating the flow of breast milk. Although the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding in Tangerang City is relatively high, postpartum mothers at PMB M still experience difficulties in breast milk production and secretion. This condition may hinder the success of exclusive breastfeeding and negatively affect both maternal and infant health. Oxytocin massage and Moringa leaf consumption are safe, easy-to-implement non-pharmacological methods; however, their application in midwifery practice has not been optimized. Based on the results of a study conducted at PMB M Batu Ceper, Tangerang City, in 2025, both oxytocin massage and Moringa leaf supplementation were proven effective in increasing breast milk production among postpartum mothers. Oxytocin massage improves milk flow through the stimulation of oxytocin secretion, while Moringa leaves enhance breast milk production through their nutritional content and galactagogue compounds that stimulate prolactin secretion. Although both interventions had a positive effect on breast milk production, Moringa leaf supplementation demonstrated a more optimal improvement compared to oxytocin massage.
