Abstract

Since its escalation on October 7th, 2023, the Israel-Palestine conflict has become a pivotal event, drawing global attention and complicating post-COVID international relations. India's historical stance of nonalignment, rooted in anti-colonialism and southern solidarity, has traditionally favored Palestinian independence. However, since the 1990s, India has gradually shifted its foreign policy, deepening ties with Israel amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics. This paper explores the factors driving India's shift towards stronger relations with Israel through a realist perspective. This paper employs the qualitative research methods with literature studies using primary and secondary data. The paper examines India's strategic adaptations in response to its rivalries with China and Pakistan. It finds that under BJP leadership, India's relationship with Israel has flourished, marked by extensive diplomatic exchanges and significant arms trade, making Israel a crucial ally in India's defense modernization. This partnership has provided India with critical military capabilities and technological advancements. The authors conclude that India's pursuit of strategic autonomy allows it to maintain agency and pursuit of national interests with little to none external restraints. This strategic autonomy approach underscores India's commitment to enhanced security and technological self-sufficiency amidst regional and global power shifts.

Abstract

Mercenaries or guns for hire have been a considerable force to reckon with in the international system. Their involvement in the conflicts of all scales have their share of contribution to the eventual outcome of the conflict. Such is the case of the Wagner Group. As a non-state actor, the Wagner Group has engendered numerous tempests across the world, one of them is the Sahel region. Their presence in the Sahel region has been a focal point of disputes within the international community. Against that backdrop, the paper seeks to shed light on how the regional security complex of the Sahel region has been severely affected by non-state actors like the Wagner group. In carrying out the research undertaking, the writers employ the qualitative research method that entails the use of secondary data alike along with the regional security complex as the guiding theoretical framework. This paper lodges how the Sahel region regional security dynamic has been subjected to changes as a result of the Wagner group’s pursuit of their own set of interests. However, it is important how the leeway for them to do so was made available by the states who reside in the region.

Abstract

Drug trafficking is one of globalization's rotten fruits that the United States (US) has struggled against as it has witnessed 4 waves of opioid epidemic. Chief among the trafficked drugs is fentanyl that caused more than 100.000 in the last two years. Its crossboundary nature, how they originate from outside the US, makes it intricate to solve as it would require a holistic approach. Against that backdrop, this study seeks to provide a security understanding of the issue and its geopolitical repercussions for the US. The writers employ the qualitative research method that entails the use of both primary and secondary data procured from the internet. The article begins with an elaboration of how fentanyl trafficking poses a threat to the security of the US. Here, fentanyl trafficking falls under the non-traditional threat with a far-reaching security implication, especially in the national and human sense. Following that, the geopolitical repercussions of this transnational threat is discussed. Among them is how the issue has riled up the US relations with Mexico and China. Finally, an overview of the existing means to deal with the problem is provided along with some suggestions as to the path ahead.
