Abstract

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a pathogenic bacterium that is the causative agent of tuberculosis. The treatment of tuberculosis is a lengthy process that may induce boredom and lead to the cessation of medication in patients, which can result in the development of bacterial resistance to multiple anti-tuberculosis drugs. Many factors affected the success of tuberculosis treatment include individual characteristics such as age, education, occupation, and environmental conditions such as occupancy density, ventilation, lighting and floor condition. The objective of the study was to know correlation between individual characteristic and home environment with the success of tuberculosis treatment. The observational retrospective and analytics design were applied, which the research population were 30 individual tuberculosis patients who have been regularly without stop taking antibiotics for 6 months or more at the Bengkalis District Hospital. The results demonstrated that all participant have taken tuberculosis antibiotics drugs for more than 6 months and GeneXpert results confirmed 2 patients (6,7%) exhibited positive results for Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and 28 patients (93,3%) exhibited negative results. The individual characteristic such as education level, occupation and enveromental sanitation related to unsuccessful tuberculosis treatment. The findings of this study indicate a need for further examination of the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in patients who have completed treatment, with the objective of ensuring the absence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the patient's body.

Abstract

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease that requires long-term treatment using anti-tuberculosis drugs (OAT). The use of OAT, especially in the long term, can cause side effects on metabolism and organ function, one of which is indicated by changes in uric acid and urea levels in the blood. This study aims to analyze the relationship between environmental health and uric acid and urea levels in pulmonary TB patients undergoing OAT therapy. The benefits of this research include examining the relationship between uric acid and urea levels in pulmonary TB patients taking anti-tuberculosis drugs (OAT) and informing patients that TB treatment may cause an increase in uric acid and urea levels in the kidneys. The study design is an analytical observational study. The cross-sectional design involves measuring uric acid and urea levels using a chemical analyzer. The results of uric acid level measurements using the chemical analyzer showed that 25 respondents had normal uric acid levels (72%), while 28% had levels above the normal range. For urea levels, 16 respondents (64%) had normal values, and 9 respondents (36%) had levels exceeding the normal range. After consuming OAT for 1 month or less, 9 patients (60%) were observed, 2–3 months for 2 patients (13.33%), and 5 months for 1 patient (6.67%).

Abstract

Increasing microplastic pollution in the environment raises concern about toxic risks to living organisms, and one important health risk involves immune system disruption, which can be observed through changes in leukocyte counts. This study aims to analyze the effect of microplastic exposure on leukocyte numbers in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) as an early indicator of environmental toxicity and health risk. The research also seeks to provide scientific evidence that can support environmental management policies and human health protection strategies. An experimental design was applied in which rats were divided into one control group and several treatment groups, and each treatment group received oral microplastic exposure at different doses over a specific period while FTIR spectroscopy (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) was used to characterize the microplastic particles before administration. After the exposure period, blood samples were collected and leukocyte counts were measured using a hematology analyzer, and statistical analysis was then performed to compare leukocyte levels across all groups. The results showed that rats exposed to microplastics exhibited increased leukocyte counts above the normal range during both week one and week two, and these elevated counts were observed across groups that received different doses of microplastics. The rise in leukocyte numbers indicates an inflammatory response and immunological stress caused by microplastic exposure, and furthermore, the findings suggest that microplastics not only produce toxic effects but also tend to accumulate and remain in the body for extended periods. In conclusion, microplastic exposure has a significant effect on leukocyte counts in white rats, and this effect reflects immune system disturbance and potential disruption of immunological homeostasis. Consequently, microplastics should be recognized as an important threat in environmental toxicology, and continued research and regulatory attention are necessary to address the risks that microplastics pose to both ecological systems and human health

Abstract

Stunting remains a public health issue in many rural and urban areas of Indonesia, linked to hygiene practices, child-rearing practices, and children’s nutritional intake. Posyandu volunteers and homemakers play a key role in prevention through behavioral change and the provision of nutritious complementary foods. This activity aims to strengthen the capacity of mothers and posyandu cadres in implementing Clean and Healthy Living Behaviors (PHBS) and developing recipes for local nutritious snacks to reduce the risk of stunting in toddlers. The expected benefits of this activity include improved knowledge and practice of PHBS, enhanced skills in preparing nutritious snacks, and increased availability of nutritious complementary foods in households, which has the potential to reduce the incidence of stunting in the medium term. Methods: The program was implemented through a one-day integrated education session that included PHBS education, demonstrations of preparing nutritious snacks using local ingredients, recipe demonstrations, hands-on practice sessions, and nutrition counseling. There were 30 participants (30 mothers and toddlers and 8 Posyandu cadres) in Padang Sarai Village, at the Kenanga 13 Posyandu. Evaluation used pre- and post-tests for knowledge and skills, observations of PHBS practices, as well as taste tests and nutritional analysis of simple snacks. Results: Following the intervention, there was an average increase of 42% in PHBS knowledge scores and 55% in skills for preparing nutritious snacks compared to pre-intervention levels. Observations showed that 70% of households implementing at least three essential healthy lifestyle practices (handwashing, food sanitation, and safe food storage). The snack recipes developed meet local nutritional standards (energy, protein, and essential micronutrient content) and received high taste acceptance ratings in panel testing. Conclusion: Strengthening the roles of mothers and posyandu volunteers through PHBS training and nutritious snack innovations has been shown to improve knowledge, skills, and household practices that support stunting prevention
