Abstract

Currently, sterilization is the main choice for controlling the population of pets. But sterilization also has long-term effects. One of them is related to cholesterol levels in the blood. In this study, we investigated the effect of castration on changes in cholesterol levels. Twenty-three Wistar rats aged 10 weeks were divided into four groups: the female sham surgery group (n = 6) and the male sham surgery group (n = 6) who underwent sham surgery, the orchiectomized (OCX) group (n = 6), which underwent bilateral OCX at 10 weeks of age, the ovariectomy (OVX) group of mice (n = 6) who underwent bilateral OVX at 10 weeks of age. At 8 weeks postoperatively, all 23 mice were shut off. The serum cholesterol level is measured. Serum cholesterol levels had no effect 0.168, namely (p value> 0.05) in the castration rat group (OCX + OVX) compared to the sham surgery group with 67.08 ± 13.581 and 76.00 ± 16.346, respectively. Our findings indicate that orchiectomy and ovariectomy have no effect on cholesterol levels.

Abstract

Sterilization is the recommended method of conception for animals. This method has also been used in many countries to control populations in dogs and cats. However, this action has some long-term effects as it affects the production of reproductive hormones in the body. This study aims to determine the effect of sterilization on the number of osteocytes. This study is an experimental study with a Posttest-Only Control Design, by observing rats that were fed standard feed until the age of 16 weeks and then terminated and measured the planned variables. A total of 24 rats aged 10 weeks were divided into 4 groups, namely 6 control females, 6 ovariohysterectomy females, 6 orchiectomy males, and 6 control males. 6 weeks after sterilization, all rats were euthanized and the left thigh bone was taken for histological examination of bone cells, namely osteocytic cells. The results of the analysis using the independent t-test, the results of the osteocyte cell test in females were p<0.05 which showed statistically that the sterilization action in female rats had a significant effect on the number of osteocyte cells, while in male rats, the value of p>0.05, which means statistically sterilization measures. had no significant effect on the number of osteocytes. Abstract

Meloxicam is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) which is an antipyretic analgesic drug as well as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is widely used by the public, including pet owners, in treating their favorite animals without advice from a veterinarian. The use of meloxicam in excessive doses can trigger kidney damage. Based on related research, meloxicam can cause cell death due to nephrotoxicity. Ajwa dates have the highest antioxidant activity among other types of dates, suppress lipid peroxidation, prevent cell damage, and have nephroprotective abilities. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of giving ajwa date fruit extract on creatinine levels of male wistar rats induced by toxic dose of meloxicam. This research is an experimental research with the research design used is the Pre Test-Post Test Design Group. The total sample used was 24 male wistar rats which were divided into 4 groups, namely the negative control group (K1) which was given 1% Na CMC on days 1-18, the positive control group (K2) which was given meloxicam 30mg/kgBW on day 1- 4 and 1% Na CMC on days 5-18, treatment group 1 (K3) was given meloxicam 30mg/kgBW on days 1-4 and ajwa date fruit extract 150mg/kgBW on days 5-18, treatment group 2 (K4) given meloxicam 30 mg/kg body weight on days 1-4 and ajwa date fruit extract 300 mg/kg body weight on days 5-18. Blood sampling was carried out on day 19 to measure creatinine levels. The results of data analysis using the Independent T-Test test for groups K1 and K2 were P < 0.05, which means that there is a statistically significant relationship between the administration of meloxicam and the increase in creatinine levels. The results of data analysis using the independent T-Test test for the K2 group with K3 and K4 were P<0.05, which means that there is a statistically significant relationship between the administration of ajwa date fruit extract and the decrease in creatinine levels of rats given a toxic dose of meloxicam. Abstract

In the world of veterinary medicine, maintaining the cleanliness of pets is one of the efforts to suppress the occurrence of zoonosis. One effort that can be done is by routinely grooming. Grooming is a hygiene treatment that includes bathing, cleaning ears, cutting nails, and combing hair. However, currently in Pangkep Regency, several problems have been found along with the increase in the number of pet lovers, one of which is the lack of knowledge of owners about the procedures for legitimate grooming. This factor then became the background for the creation of a workshop to empower pet lovers with grooming skills in Pangkep Regency. The purpose of this activity is to transfer knowledge by providing socialization and direct demonstrations regarding the procedures for legitimate grooming of pets to avoid integument diseases and conditions that can trigger the emergence of new diseases after improper grooming in Pangkep Regency. These legitimate grooming procedures can be adopted and utilized by the community, namely basic knowledge of grooming techniques that can be applied directly to pets at home. This will help owners to save on grooming costs for their pets. During the implementation of the activity, a demonstration of legal grooming was carried out on two cats, pocket books were distributed, and educational videos were shown on legal grooming technique guides. Participants who attended were 42 pet owners who were members of the Pangkep pet lovers group, where at the end of the activity session a questionnaire was filled out by the owners. Based on the results of the survey conducted, 39 were able to answer the questions from the questionnaire correctly, the rest were owners who did not follow the activity until the end due to other activities outside the location of this service. This is a reflection of the improvement in legal grooming skills in owners who previously only 8 out of 37 respondents understood the legal grooming aspect.

Abstract

This community service activity was carried out at the Hasanuddin University Animal Hospital with the aim of improving nutritional aspects through the assistance of homemade pet food preparation in Makassar City. The activity took place on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at the Hasanuddin University Animal Hospital, Makassar, South Sulawesi. The participants in this activity were 55 pet owners. The methods used in this activity began with a survey in the form of questionnaires given to pet owners regarding their understanding of pet nutrition. Another method was the transfer of knowledge, both in the form of instructional videos and pocket books on making balanced homemade pet food using ingredients readily available in the market. The results of this community service showed an increase in pet owners' understanding of pet nutrition based on the initial and final surveys conducted. The initial survey showed that 46 out of 53 respondents did not understand this nutritional aspect well, whereas the final survey showed that all 55 participants understood the importance of nutrition for their pets. Additionally, the use of easily obtainable ingredients in the market, such as mackerel, which is rich in macromolecules, vitamins, and minerals, was highlighted. The food formulation was measured according to the daily needs of the pets. The homemade pet food proved to be liked by the pets and economical, thereby enhancing the welfare of pet owners in Makassar City.

Abstract

Background: The increase in the feral cat population is a problem that needs to be addressed, as this population growth is feared to increase the risk of zoonoses, or disease transmission from animals to humans. A solution to this population increase is to carry out sterilization measures. Research Objective: To determine the effect of sterilization on the quality of life of local male cats. Research Method: This research uses an experimental and descriptive approach, with cats as the research subjects, to examine the effect of sterilization on improving the quality of life of cats. The quality of life parameters for the cats consist of three factors: body health, ability to survive, and stress level. Body health is determined through physical and hematological examinations. The ability to survive is assessed based on the cat's age, while stress levels are measured by observing the cat's stress-related behavior after sterilization. The results of the study showed that the body health parameters were in normal condition, as indicated by the RBC and WBC profiles being within normal levels. The survival parameters showed that all cats were able to survive, and the stress level parameters indicated that the cats were calmer and less aggressive after sterilization.
