Abstract

The way a traditional society's culture views gender roles will influence the behavior of that society in the built environment, including the traditional Toraja society. Yet, in contrast to other traditional societies, this society believes that men and women have equally important roles in building family life or what is usually called gender equality. Thus, this research was conducted to see how gender equality influences people's behavior in their daily lives, especially from an architectural perspective which is reflected in spatial patterns. Therefore, this research was carried out by applying a qualitative descriptive method, where data was obtained through literature study and direct observation in the field, and strengthened by the results of interviews with the local community. The data is then processed and explained based on aspects: house ownership, roles and activities of each gender, use of space, and gender symbolization in the physical form of traditional Toraja house buildings or what is called Tongkonan. The research results show that the ancient life patterns of the Toraja Indigenous People who adhere to gender equality are manifested in patterns of spatial planning and use of space. Even though Tongkonan is considered an image of women as mothers, there was no special treatment or inclusion of certain genders in utilizing every corner of the existing space.

Abstract

Culture, region, and climate are three fundamental aspects that influence vernacular architecture. As the largest archipelagic country in the world, Indonesia is rich in diversity of vernacular architecture, originating from different cultural backgrounds and natural characteristics. It is interesting to examine whether significant similarities or differences are reflected in two vernacular houses formed from other cultures, regions, and topographies, even though they have the same function: residence. In this research, architectural comparisons were made between Sundanese traditional houses with the natural character of the mountains in West Java and Banjar traditional houses in the coastal region of South Kalimantan. Data was obtained through the literature review and then analyzed using Bentley's theory of three aspects — functional-constructional, environmental, and socio-cultural; as well as seven criteria — permeability, variety, readability, robustness, visual suitability, richness, and personalization. The research results show that the differences between these two vernacular architectures are visible from the use of materials and the type of foundation used. Apart from that, an interesting fact was discovered that even though both of them have different cultures and regions, the shape of the roof, the position of openings such as windows and doors, and the location of the buildings in the same housing complex, these two vernacular architectures have similarities. It is analyzed that this is the response of both communities that is reflected in each of their vernacular architecture to the environment in the same climate, namely the tropical climate.

Abstract

Wood is a natural material that is easy to find and can be used for building materials. A large number of types of wood causes errors in the selection of wood based on its use. This study aims to determine the reactions and changes that occur in the wood used in the model. This study used an experimental method carried out on wooden models through two indoor and outdoor placements. Indoor testing was carried out by placing the model in a closed room with an average room temperature of 24-33°C for 14 days, while outdoor testing was carried out by placing the model in an open space for 7 days. From the results of the analysis carried out, wood materials can be used indoors and outdoors. However, several factors related to wood’s type, nature, and quality must be considered. Some types of wood require special care such as coating the wood so that it can be used optimally outdoors. From these experiments, it can be concluded that wood has several types, and we must know the characteristics of wood according to its use.

Abstract

The Advanced Independent Workforce (AIW) program plays a pivotal role in facilitating the development of micro and small enterprises in Indonesia. Nonetheless, various challenges, including inconsistent mentorship and limited evaluation mechanisms, impede its overall effectiveness. In response to these issues, a Dual Monitoring and Evaluation (DME) system was implemented to enhance the role of AIW mentors. This system comprises one-on-one meetings aimed at delivering personalized guidance, as well as onsite monitoring and evaluation to assess real-time business progress and operational challenges. This initiative was executed across multiple provinces in Indonesia, engaging mentors, mentees, and relevant stakeholders. The findings indicate that the DME system significantly enhances mentor effectiveness, bolsters business sustainability, and improves problem-solving capabilities. The one-on-one meetings afforded structured feedback and capacity-building opportunities for mentors, while onsite evaluations facilitated direct observation and timely interventions for mentees. The integration of direct engagement and field-based evaluation not only strengthened mentorship strategies but also increased mentee confidence and promoted adaptive business practices. This study underscores the importance of a structured mentoring model in workforce development and recommends the expansion of DME coverage, the incorporation of digital tools, and the development of standardized evaluation metrics. This approach presents a scalable model for analogous economic empowerment programs, thereby ensuring sustainable mentorship and the success of enterprises.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a serious health issue in Bekasi Regency, particularly among school-aged children. In 2024, DHF cases reached 412, with four fatalities, marking an increase compared to the previous year. This study is based on a health outreach activity consisting of two sessions: interactive education and an aromatherapy candle-making workshop. These sessions aimed to enhance children's understanding of DHF prevention. The activity was conducted in RW 12 Graha Mattel, Bekasi Regency, and involved 77 children aged 4–9 years. The interactive education methods included storytelling, games, and simulations, while the workshop taught aromatherapy candle-making using essential oils from lemongrass and lavender. The pre-test and post-test results showed a significant increase in the children's knowledge. Understanding of DHF prevention increased from 46.7% to 83.6% after the interactive education session, while understanding of the benefits and methods of making aromatherapy candles increased from 14.3% to 75.1% after the workshop. High participation in these activities underscores the success of the interactive and engaging educational approach. This study concludes that interactive learning methods and hands-on practice are effective in improving children's knowledge of DHF prevention and can be applied in other health education programs to create a healthier and more knowledgeable generation.
