Abstract

Most of the problems that arise indicate lack of motivation of grade 1 students of the Ashhabul Yamin Islamic boarding school.For example, most students are not interested in learning English, less motivational words from the teacher.Many students do not complete their homework at home and also many students think English is a difficult subject because they don't have anyone to support them directly including their classmates. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between student motivation and student academic achievement in learning English. This research is a correlational research. Total population is 44 students, the sample is 26 students. Researchers used purposive sampling on determine the sample in this study. To collect data, researchers use questionnaire and documentation. To analyze the data collected, researchers useSpearman's Rating Correlation Coefficient (and to test the hypothesis,the researcher uses the t-test formula and consults the results into the t-table with = 0.05. The finding of the research revealed that the coefficient of correlation ( was -0.115. It means, there is no correlation between extrinsic motivation and students’ academic achievement in studying English. In the other words, based on hypothesis testing, the t- score was -0.114 whereas t-table on = 0,05 was 0.404. It means, the tscore was smaller than the t-table. Hence, Ha rejected and Ho accepted, which stated that there is no significant correlation between students motivation and students’ achievement in studying English.

Abstract

This research aims to explain the effect of using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) on students' reading comprehension in the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Banuhampu. To explain the effect, researchers used experimental research with a quasi-design. The location of this research was taken in class XI of SMA Negeri 1 Banuhampu with a sample size of 70 students. Based on this text, researchers found a significant effect of using Collaborative Strategic Reading on students' reading comprehension, with results of Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000 < ½ ? (0.025). It can be concluded that there is an influence produced by the use of CSR in reading comprehension. This research also looks at the difference in average scores in the post-test results of the two classes, where the experimental class score is higher than the control class with a score of 72.31 > 68.53 with a comparison score of 3.78. It can be ascertained that the research conducted by researchers produced results in seeing differences in the use of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) on students' reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research was done due to several problems that found by the researcher. This research was aimed to find out the effect of using skimming technique in students reading comprehension to find out main idea on narrative text. This research was conducted at the ninth grade of Mts Ti Paninggahan. In this study, the researcher used quantitative method with pre-experimental design by comparing the students’ pre-test and post-test scores. To determine the sample, the researcher used purposive sampling and choosed one class as experimental class. The subject of this study ninth grade that consist of 18 students. The data was analyzed using t-test formula. The result shown that there were significant difference on the students reading comprehension to find out main idea after taught used skimming technique. The students mean score of the post-test was 78,33, it is bigger than mean score of pre-test was 46,11. The researcher used t-test formula by comparing score of pre-test and post-test through SPSS. Based on the output statistic, the value of Sig (2-tailed) is 0,00 < 0,05. It means that Ha is accepted. It means that the students who are taught using skimming technique is better than the students who are taught before using skimming technique. In short, skimming technique has a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension to find out main idea on narrative text at Mts Ti Paninggahan.

Abstract

This research was done related to the problem that happen at most the eleventh grade students at PPTQ Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah Pakan Sinayan. The problem was most of students difficult to practice speaking English in front of the class. In addition the students were too shy to make permission by using English and speak with friends that reflexively would laughed to them if they make a mistake. Furthermore, this research is conducted to described that factor affecting of the students’ difficulties in speaking English at Eleventh grade of PPTQ Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah Pakan Sinayan. The type of the research was descriptive qualitative approach. The data was collected from the interview to the informants. The source of the research was the eleventh grade students, the informant based on the teacher who determines the students who have problems. The technique of data analysis used Miles and Huberman’ Model, consisted of : data collection, data reduction, display the data, and conclusion. Based on analysis of the data, it was found that the factor affecting of students’ difficulties in speaking English are lack of vocabulary, lack of competence in writing sentences, when the students perform speaking English they are nervous and stutter in expressing the sentences, lack ideas to create and develop the sentences, and lack of interest in learning English. The main factor affecting of the students’ difficulties are lack of interest in learning English. In addition, they are given a few minutes to understand the topic that is given by the teacher, and suggest them to the English media that have the easier vocabularies to be understood by the students.

Abstract

This research was conducted since there were many problems in listening comprehension which were correlated with students’ prior knowledge. There were some problems related to the students’ prior knowledge in comprehending the spoken text. Most of students were difficult to comprehend the spoken text. Some of students are not able to comprehend what the speaker said, although they have prior knowledge about the topic of spoken text. This research aimed to discover the correlation between students’ prior knowledge and listening comprehension. This research was a correlational research. The total of population was 310 students, the sample was 31 students which consisted of 3 or 2 students per class and the researcher used simple random sampling in determining the sample. The data were gotten from test about students’ prior knowledge and listening comprehension that the researcher distributed to students. To analyze the data, product moment Coefficient Correlation ( ρ ) was used to test the Hypothesis, this research used r-hitung formula and consult the result into r-table with α =0,05. From the analysis of the data, it was found that the coefficient of correlation gotten was 0.771 in the range 0.70-0.90 or was in high correlation. It means there was a positive correlation between students’ prior knowledge and their listening comprehension. In other words, the Ha which stated that there is significant correlation between students’ prior knowledge and their listening comprehension was accepted. In conclusion, there was high correlation between students’ prior knowledge and their listening comprehension, if the students had good prior knowledge it will increase their listening comprehension.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the correlation between Self efficacy and English achievement at eleventh grade of MAN 2 Padang Panjang. Most of the students’ there still encounter problems in mastering English achievement. Some students’ English achievement were not satisfying yet, it was supported by the score of English test result. There were some of students had high Self efficacy in learning English. They felt confident and able to handle a task given by the teacher. However, their English achievement were still low from standardization of minimum criteria. It means some of them have high self efficacy but low in English achievement. Then the researcher was interested in doing research about The Correlation between Self Efficacy and English Achievement. This research used correlational reseach. The total population was 310 students, the sample was taken from 49 students who divided into two classes of XI IPS 1 and XI IPS 2. Data obtained through a questionnaire about self efficacy that researcher distributed to students, while the students’ English achievement was collected from the English teacher’ document. Furthermore, the data collected will be processed using Pearson product moment formula and SPSS program. To test the hypothesis, researchers used the r-test and consulted the results with a t-table with ɑ = 0.05. Based on the result of the research, the correlation coefficient (rxy) between self efficacy and English achievement was 0.655. It means there was a positive direction between two variables. Then, the correlation between Self efficacy and English achievement is in the enough category. This can be seen from the calculated r value of 0.655 which is in the range of 0.40 – 0.70 with a enough category. In addition to test hypothesis, r-test is 0.655, while the r-table on df = 47 and ɑ = 0.05 is 0.288. It means that the r-test was bigger than the r-table. In other words, Ha is accepted, which states that there is a significant correlation between students’ Self efficacy and their English achievement at eleventh grade of MAN 2 Padang Panjang.
