Abstract

A Pro-life event held by Student for Life turned chaotic. This phenomenon can be attributed to the occurrence of negative impoliteness strategies, which attack one’s negative face-wants. This research is aimed to analyze the strategies and the functions of negative impoliteness in the event. This research is descriptive-qualitative, using observational and non-participatory techniques for the data collection. The collected data were analyzed according to the theory of Culpeper (1996, 2011) for the strategies of negative impoliteness and their functions. The results showed that there were negative impoliteness strategies done by the pro-choice audience to frighten, condescend, ridicule, scorn, invade, explicitly associate with negative aspects, and hinder the pro-life speakers and members, which were functioning as coercive and affective impoliteness, consequently turned the event chaotic. They knew and were able to act polite, but decided not to. Arguments aside, both parties should have engaged in a professional and mature attitude.

Abstract

Deixis is a linguistic term that is used to point based on context. Without comprehending the context, it is almost impossible to understand what the deixis refers to. In movies, deictic expressions are supported by the scenes to provide the context of the reference. Therefore, this research aims to analyze deixis, regarding its types and referential distinction in Facing the Giants movie, by using the theory of Levinson (1983) and Yule (1996). As qualitative research, the researchers used observational and non-participatory techniques to collect the data and applied descriptive qualitative analysis of data reduction, data display, conclusion, and verification. The results of the research found all types of deixis, and that the referential distinction had a big role in constructing the movie scenes. The movie settings, scenes, and plot were arranged to provide the essential context of the deictic expressions. The metaphoric title of “The Giants” is also deictically used to refer to both the literal “Richland Giants team” in the movie, and the metaphorical “Goliath” in the Bible.

The aim of this research is to analyze simile and its type in the movie “War Room” (2015) directed by Alex Kendrick. Similes are employed in a number of ways and serve a range of purposes, including movie. Therefore, this study applied qualitative research as the design and focused on analyzing simile, which is part of semantics study. A simile is a clear comparison, and it frequently uses comparative terms like or as. The type of similes is categorized by Dancygier & Sweetser (2014) into narrow-scope and wider-scope similes. As the result of the research, there were 20 similes found in the movie, such as 4 similes using “as” and 16 similes using ‘like’ as the comparison word. Moreover, there were 11 narrow-scope similes and 9 wider-scope similes apparent in the movie’s narration and conversation.
