Abstract

Abstract

Body scrub is a pharmaceutical preparation in the form of a beauty product that functions to smooth the skin of the body and remove damaged skin cells with the help of scrubs. Bay leaf (Syzygium polyanthum (Wight.)Walp) and white rice powder (Oryza sativa L.) are plants that are widely used to maintain health, as a traditional medicine and also as an antioxidant. The research method carried out is experimental. The purpose of this study was to formulate ethanol extracts of bay leaf (Syzygium polyanthum (Wight.)Walp) and white rice powder (Oryza sativa L.) in the form of Body Scrub preparations with concentrations 2, 4, and 6 that can be used as a skin moisturizer. The extract sample uses ethanol solvent, which will be formulated into the form of a Body Scrub preparation, then an examination of the physical quality test of the preparation, irritation test, hedonic test, moisturiser effectiveness test using a skin moisture analyzer is carried out. The results of this study show that the ethanol extract of bay leaf (Syzygium polyanthum) and white rice powder (Oryza sativa L.) can be formulated as a Body Scrub preparation that has met the physical quality requirements of the preparation which has a semi-solid shape, a more concentrated preparation color and a distinctive aroma of bay leaf extract. The preparation shows a homogeneous composition, M/A cream type, spread power range 5.7-6.2 cm, viscosity range 3,800- 4000 cPs, pH 6.4-6.7, non-irritating to the skin and stable in storage for 4 weeks of storage, hedonic value that is very preferred by researchers on the Body scrub F3 preparation. The effectiveness test showed an increase in humidity of 31.59%, which was the best in the preparation of F3 concentration. It can be concluded that the ethanol extract of bay leaf (Syzygium polyanthum (Wight.)Walp) and white rice powder (Oryza sativa L.) can be formulated in Body Scrub preparations that have met the physical quality requirements of the preparation as a skin moisturizer at a concentration of 6%.

Abstract

Cottage salak (Salacca zalacca (Gaertn.) Voss) is one of the tropical fruits that not only has high nutritional value, but also contains bioactive compounds that have the potential to be natural antibacterial. The skin of the salak pondoh fruit is often considered waste, even though this part is rich in chemical compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, phenols, tannins, alkaloids, chlorogenic acid, ferrulic acid, and protocatetic acid. These compounds are known to have biological activity that is able to inhibit the growth of pathogenic microorganisms. Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi bacteria are the main causes of diarrhea and typhoid fever that affect many people, especially in areas with poor sanitation. Infection of these two bacteria can cause intestinal tissue damage, dehydration, and even serious complications if not treated immediately. Therefore, efforts to find alternative antibacterial agents from natural ingredients such as salak pondoh bark are important. This study aims to test the effectiveness of ethanol extract of salak pondoh bark against E. coli and S. typhi bacteria. Extraction was carried out by the maceration method using ethanol as a solvent, then continued with testing of antibacterial activity using the disc diffusion method. The concentration of the extract was tested on several variations to determine the minimum concentration capable of providing an optimal buffer zone against both test bacteria. The community service program integrated with this research aims to increase public understanding regarding the potential of salak pondoh skin as a natural antibacterial. Education is carried out through counseling and demonstrations of making simple extracts that can be used to clean household appliances or prevent microbial contamination of foodstuffs. With this approach, it is hoped that the community can use salak pondoh skin waste more productively, while reducing dependence on synthetic chemicals that have the potential to cause side effects.

Abstract

Jackfruit seeds contain several secondary metabolites, including flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, and steroids. The jackfruit tree is a tropical plant commonly found in Indonesia. This study aimed to determine whether extracts from jackfruit seeds have antibacterial activity against Shigella dysenteriae and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The antibacterial activity was tested using the discdiffusion method with concentrations of 10%, 15%, and 20%.The research results indicated that the diameter of the inhibition zone against Shigella dysenteriae at 10% concentration was 13.15 mm, at 15% concentration was 15.9 mm, and at 20% concentration was 19.08 mm. For Staphylococcus epidermidis, the inhibition zone diameters were 10.5 mm at 10% concentration, 13.1 mm at 15% concentration, and 13.7 mm at 20% concentration. The results demonstrated that as the concentration of ethanol extract from jackfruit seeds increased, the inhibition zones around the discs also increased. This was attributed to the varying volumes of ethanol extract present at each concentration level. It was found that the ethanol extract from jackfruit seeds exhibited strong inhibitory effects against both Shigella dysenteriae and Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria.
