Abstract

Fungal infections are common health problems, one of which is caused by Candida albicans. The use of synthetic antifungal agents in treatment can lead to side effects and resistance risks, thus necessitating safer natural alternatives. Papaya leaves (Carica papaya L.) and basil leaves (Ocimum x africanum Lour) are known to contain active compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, steroids, and tannins, which have potential as antifungal agents. The combination of these two plant extracts was used to enhance antifungal effectiveness through possible synergistic effects of their active compounds, with the expectation of yielding a more optimal inhibitory effect against Candida albicans. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a combination of papaya and basil leaf extracts in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans. The research was conducted experimentally using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatment groups and four replications. The antifungal activity was tested using the disc diffusion method with extract combinations formulated in 96% ethanol at concentrations of (18.75% : 18.75%), (37.5% : 12.5%), and (56.25% : 6.25%), as well as a negative control (aquadest) and a positive control (ketoconazole 15 μL). One-Way ANOVA analysis showed a significant difference between treatments (p < 0.05). Further analysis using Tukey HSD revealed no statistically significant differences between the three extract combination groups. However, P3 exhibited the highest inhibition zone (4.73 ± 0.91 mm), while P1 showed the lowest (3.45 ± 0.65 mm), and P2 was intermediate (3.98 ± 0.65 mm). All three combinations showed statistically significant differences compared to the negative control (0 mm) and the positive control (6.50 ± 0.83 mm). Thus, although no significant difference was observed between the combination groups, all combinations demonstrated statistically significant antifungal activity against Candida albicans compared to the negative control. In conclusion, the combination of papaya and basil leaf extracts possesses antifungal activity against Candida albicans, although the effectiveness is not yet optimal. Further research is recommended with increased extract concentrations and development into pharmaceutical dosage forms such as gels or ointments as alternative topical antifungal treatments.

Abstract

Solid soap is a body cleansing preparation commonly used to maintain skin health, especially for the purpose of perfuming, improving body odor. Some previous studies have developed solid soap formulations with red dragon fruit peel extract, but no studies have combined it with other natural ingredients that are humectant and antibacterial such as pure honey. The purpose of this study was to determine the concentration of formulations that provide the most effective stability results for solid bath soap preparations of dragon fruit peel extract combined with pure honey. The method used in this research is experimental, making simplisia of red dragon fruit skin then extracted with 70% ethanol solvent. Solid bath soap was formulated with different concentrations of pure honey and red dragon fruit peel extract in each formula. In this study, the results of formulation I did not meet the requirements on hardness and foam stability. Formulation II did not meet the requirements on pH, foam stability, and free fatty acids. Formulation III did not meet the requirements on pH, hardness, foam stability, and free fatty acids. Based on the hedonic test, formulation II was most liked by panelists on color, aroma, and shape. So it can be concluded that the characteristics of the three formulas differ based on the concentration levels of honey and extracts used and the most effective stability results are found in formulation I.

Abstract

Skin damage due to UV exposure and pollution can trigger the formation of free radicals that accelerate the process of premature aging. The use of natural antioxidants in cosmetic products to combat free radicals serves as an alternative to synthetic antioxidants, which often cause side effects. Agarwood leaves (Aquilaria malaccensis L.) are known to contain groups of active compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, saponins, and terpenoids that have potential as antioxidants. This study aims to formulate and evaluate the face mist preparation of ethanol extract from agarwood leaves in three different concentration variations: FI (5%), FII (6%), and FIII (7%). The research was conducted experimentally in the laboratory, covering the stages of plant determination, maceration with 96% ethanol, phytochemical screening, formulation of preparations, physical evaluation (organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, specific gravity, spreadability, spray condition, drying time, protection, and stability through cycling tests), as well as antioxidant activity testing using the DPPH method with UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The results showed that all formulations had good physical characteristics and were stable using the cycling test method, except for FII which was unstable in the specific gravity test. The IC₅₀ values of each formulation were FI at 28.138 mg/L, FII at 21.871 mg/L, and FIII at 19.387 mg/L, categorized as very strong antioxidants and the three formulations had significant differences with a p-value of ˂0.05. The conclusion of this research is that the FIII formula (7%) is the best formula because it has high antioxidant activity, is stable physically and chemically, and has the potential as a natural cosmetic product that protects the skin from free radicals.

Abstract

Caffeine, a natural psychostimulant, enhances arousal by inhibiting the effects of adenosine on the dopamine pathway. This study aimed to analyze and compare caffeine concentrations in seven robusta coffee samples (coded RC) and five black tea bags (coded BT) using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative tests employed Dragendorff reagents for coffee and Parry reagents for tea, confirming caffeine presence through colorimetric changes. Quantitative analysis utilized reverse-phase UHPLC, with a mobile phase of aquabidestilata and methanol (60:40), a C18 stationary phase at 40°C, and detection at 272 nm. Validation parameters demonstrated strong performance, with an RSD of 0.573%, a linear correlation coefficient of 0.998 for concentrations between 100–250 ppm, a LoD of 1.02 ppm, a LoQ of 3.10 ppm, and 99.88% accuracy. Results showed robusta coffee sample RC3 contained the highest caffeine concentration at 26.00 mg/serving, while black tea sample BTB3 exhibited 2.44 mg/serving. Despite higher caffeine levels in robusta coffee compared to black tea, both remained below the SNI threshold of 50 mg/serving, confirming their safety for consumption.

Abstract

Candida infection caused by Candida albicans is a common health problem, especially in the skin and female reproductive organs. In Indonesia, the prevalence of candidiasis is around 20–25%, with a predominance in the hair, skin, mucous membranes, mouth, and esophagus. In Lampung Province, candidiasis incidents include severe intertrigo (56%), mild intertrigo (44%), axillary candidiasis (52%), and breast candidiasis (20%). This study aimed to evaluate the antifungal activity of a combination of garlic bulb (Allium sativum L.) and red betel leaf (Piper ornatum N.E.Br) extracts against the growth of Candida albicans. This study used a laboratory experimental method with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), consisting of a negative control (distilled water), a positive control (fluconazole), and a combination of extracts with a ratio of 20%:20%, 20%:40%, and 40%:40%. The extract was obtained through maceration method, and antifungal activity was measured based on the inhibition zone. Phytochemical tests showed the presence of active compounds such as saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and steroids that act as antifungals. The results of the disc diffusion test showed the average diameter of the inhibition zone as follows: 0 mm (negative control), 6.49 ± 1.05 mm (positive control), 2.9 ± 0.26 mm (P1, weak), 4.15 ± 1.57 mm (P2, weak), 5.68 ± 2.73 mm (P3, moderate), and 6.81 ± 1.92 mm (P4, moderate). Statistical tests showed significant differences between negative and positive controls and treatments 2 and 3. In conclusion, the combination of garlic and red betel leaf extract, especially P4, has antifungal potential against Candida albicans.
