Abstract

English as a Second Language teaching in the Philippines has become popular worldwide, particularly among Asian students. This is a strong indicator that Filipino teachers are able to facilitate effective teaching-learning process amidst the presence of multilingualism and multiculturalism. Banking on this premise, this paper attempted to explore on the best practices of ESL teachers employ in promoting the macro skills among their culturally diverse students. To achieve this objective, a general qualitative inquiry design using a validated structured interview guide served as the primary data collection tool. The study had 8 Filipino ESL teachers who were purposively chosen following criteria set by the researcher. Results showed that the teachers purposely differentiate their approaches depending on the levels, cultural background, learning styles, and preferences of the students. Moreover, these approaches are generally aligned with the aim of scaffolding the students to improve their English language proficiency. Some of these include role-playing, essay writing, book reports, modeling, sentence diagramming, and the like. These results are congruent with the three approaches Martin (2014) claim namely Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT). From these findings, the researcher framed the significance of a multiculturally responsive and eclectic teaching approach. Multiculturalism is found to be a significant factor in the ESL classrooms as it can create an inclusive a classroom atmosphere which can promote successful acquisition and learning of the English language.

Abstract

In the era of globalization and rapid international trade, business correspondence has emerged as a crucial tool for effective cross-cultural communication and professional success. This study aims to examine the role of English business correspondence in international business management, focusing on its linguistic features, communication strategies, and the challenges faced by non-native speakers. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method supported by content analysis of real-life business letters, emails, and memos collected from multinational companies. In addition, interviews with professionals and language instructors were conducted to identify the key skills required for writing effective business correspondence. The analysis reveals that clarity, conciseness, and formal tone are vital elements that define successful business writing. Moreover, intercultural awareness and pragmatic competence significantly impact the tone and appropriateness of communication in diverse business environments. Findings also indicate that learners of English for Business Purposes (EBP) often struggle with vocabulary selection, cultural politeness norms, and organizational structure in written messages. The study concludes that mastering English business correspondence requires a combination of language proficiency, cultural sensitivity, and real-world practice. It recommends incorporating authentic business writing samples into teaching materials, developing learner awareness of formal language structures, and providing consistent feedback. These findings are particularly useful for English educators, corporate trainers, and international business professionals aiming to enhance communication competence.

Abstract

This study explores the central role of speaking in second language acquisition (SLA), highlighting its importance in communication, intercultural interaction, and the development of communicative competence. The research aims to identify challenges learners face in developing oral proficiency and to evaluate pedagogical strategies that enhance speaking performance. Using a qualitative descriptive approach through document analysis, the study reviews applied linguistics and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) literature published between 2015 and 2024. Findings indicate that learners frequently encounter obstacles such as language anxiety, limited opportunities for authentic practice, inadequate exposure to real-life communication, and an overemphasis on reading and writing in educational contexts. These challenges restrict fluency, accuracy, and learners’ willingness to communicate. Nonetheless, several strategies have proven effective in improving speaking skills. These include task-based learning, communicative classroom activities, targeted pronunciation training, integration of digital tools, and anxiety-reducing techniques. Additionally, supportive learning environments and peer collaboration are shown to boost learners’ confidence and engagement. The study concludes that speaking instruction in SLA should adopt an integrated approach that combines linguistic, psychological, and sociocultural support. Through communicative and technology-enhanced strategies, educators can strengthen learners’ fluency, reduce speaking anxiety, and foster effective language acquisition.

Abstract

In today’s world, the ability to compose sentences that adhere with the Standard American English has been a concern in many academic institutions. Despite the effort of helping students, problems still arise as congruent with the findings of Seli, et al (2021) where students show confusion in differentiating a noun phrase from an adjective phrase. Using corpus linguistics, this study attempted to analyse the morphosyntactic features of the randomly selected First Year BS Agriculture students’ written compositions. Data was collected from the readily-available outputs in Purposive Communication during their writing topic.  As main research frameworks, the study employed Yule’s (2010) Morphological Analysis and Morley’s (2006) Syntactic Analysis in order to gather the necessary data. Regarding the syntactic features, the analysis revealed that verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions deviate the most from Standard American English. Meanwhile, in the morphological analysis, these types of errors were seen in the writings of the students: singular/plural nouns and pronouns, articles, conjunctions, and using other parts of speech. Based on these deviations, work plan for an extension activity may be designed and implemented to address issues. In addition, the locale of the current study, participants have only one English subject making; thus, writing as a separate subject should be included in the General Education curriculum.

Abstract

In an asynchronous setting, people inevitably switch languages, which is a process known as linguistic code-switching (LCS). The researcher analyzed code-switching found in the Facebook page WE THE LOKAL, which frequently uses code-switching between Kapampangan and the English language in its video captions. This study analyzed code-switching between the languages mentioned above, which tends to categorize and discuss the types and the integration of functions and reasons for code-switching. In total, 44 video captions were analyzed and categorized using the framework, all the video captions were selected following the criteria of the study. In addition, the categorization of the corpus is not limited to only one type and reason, thus, multiple variations in one video caption were expected. The result of the study found that intra-sentential switching is the most common type used on the page. Also, to address different audiences, habitual expression, to show identity with the group, and to attract attention are the reasons categorized under the phatic function. Each function categorizes reasons. The implications revealed cultural and linguistic contexts, including identity constructions, colonialism, the history of cultural symbols of Kapampangan, pop cultures, expressing belonging and cultural values, and language as a living entity.

Abstract

This study examined the syntactic structures used in audience reviews of The Conjuring: Last Rites on Letterboxd, focusing on how syntax contributed to evaluation, persuasion, and coherence in digital film discourse. Using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), 20 English-language reviews were analyzed, segmented into clauses, and interpreted through Halliday’s ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions. Findings revealed that simple and coordinated sentences dominated the corpus, reflecting reviewers’ preference for clarity, immediacy, and a conversational tone, while complex structures appeared less frequently. Syntactic analysis showed that evaluative stance was conveyed through declarative clauses, modality, and intensifiers, whereas occasional exclamatives and interrogatives heightened emotional expression. Syntax not only articulated judgments but also enhanced persuasive impact by signaling certainty, emphasis, and personal engagement. Coherence was maintained through consistent use of topical themes, conjunctions, and cohesive devices, which structured a clear progression of ideas. These patterns demonstrated that even in informal digital contexts, syntax remained central to organizing meaning and shaping readers’ interpretations. Overall, the study highlighted the importance of examining syntax in understanding how audiences constructed and negotiated meaning within online film reviews.
