Abstract

Boredom is a well-researched concept in various contexts; nonetheless, there is scarceness of research related to the relationship of boredom with reading comprehension performance in EFL context. Therefore, this study intends to determine the connection between reading boredom and reading comprehension performance by employing reading boredom coping strategies as a mediator. A quantitative research approach, and a cross-sectional and correlational research design was employed to conduct this study. Questionnaires and a reading comprehension test were used to collect data from 306 Saudi EFL students. Findings indicated that reading boredom showed a significant but negative relationship with reading comprehension performance. Also, reading boredom was positively and significantly related to reading boredom coping strategies. Moreover, reading boredom coping strategies showed a positive and significant relationship with reading comprehension performance. Lastly, findings indicated that reading boredom coping strategies mediated the association between reading boredom and reading comprehension performance. On the basis of aforementioned findings, numerous recommendations for EFL students, teachers, and policymakers were offered.

Abstract

Tertiary students in Bangladesh predominantly come from Bengali Medium Instruction (BMI) backgrounds and transition to English Medium Instruction (EMI) when pursuing higher education at private universities. This shift represents a critical transition phase from Bengali to English instruction. This study aimed to explore the challenges faced by Engineering major students during this transition at private universities in Bangladesh. Adopting a mixed-methods approach with a convergent parallel design, the study placed equal emphasis on quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data were collected through a survey of 301 respondents, while qualitative data were gathered via focus group interviews with 10 respondents using a random sampling technique. Descriptive analysis of the survey data was conducted using SPSS, and the interview data were analysed thematically. The survey results revealed that students faced significant challenges in EMI classrooms, including difficulties in understanding lectures, preparing assignments, conveying knowledge in exam scripts, and delivering presentations. The interviews provided deeper insights into these challenges. This study serves as an eye-opener, emphasizing the need for solutions to address the difficulties encountered by first-year engineering students during this transitional phase. It also recommends further research to examine the effectiveness of structured bridging programs in mitigating the linguistic gaps and challenges identified in this study.

Abstract

In the era of globalization and rapid international trade, business correspondence has emerged as a crucial tool for effective cross-cultural communication and professional success. This study aims to examine the role of English business correspondence in international business management, focusing on its linguistic features, communication strategies, and the challenges faced by non-native speakers. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method supported by content analysis of real-life business letters, emails, and memos collected from multinational companies. In addition, interviews with professionals and language instructors were conducted to identify the key skills required for writing effective business correspondence. The analysis reveals that clarity, conciseness, and formal tone are vital elements that define successful business writing. Moreover, intercultural awareness and pragmatic competence significantly impact the tone and appropriateness of communication in diverse business environments. Findings also indicate that learners of English for Business Purposes (EBP) often struggle with vocabulary selection, cultural politeness norms, and organizational structure in written messages. The study concludes that mastering English business correspondence requires a combination of language proficiency, cultural sensitivity, and real-world practice. It recommends incorporating authentic business writing samples into teaching materials, developing learner awareness of formal language structures, and providing consistent feedback. These findings are particularly useful for English educators, corporate trainers, and international business professionals aiming to enhance communication competence.

Abstract

This study explores the central role of speaking in second language acquisition (SLA), highlighting its importance in communication, intercultural interaction, and the development of communicative competence. The research aims to identify challenges learners face in developing oral proficiency and to evaluate pedagogical strategies that enhance speaking performance. Using a qualitative descriptive approach through document analysis, the study reviews applied linguistics and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) literature published between 2015 and 2024. Findings indicate that learners frequently encounter obstacles such as language anxiety, limited opportunities for authentic practice, inadequate exposure to real-life communication, and an overemphasis on reading and writing in educational contexts. These challenges restrict fluency, accuracy, and learners’ willingness to communicate. Nonetheless, several strategies have proven effective in improving speaking skills. These include task-based learning, communicative classroom activities, targeted pronunciation training, integration of digital tools, and anxiety-reducing techniques. Additionally, supportive learning environments and peer collaboration are shown to boost learners’ confidence and engagement. The study concludes that speaking instruction in SLA should adopt an integrated approach that combines linguistic, psychological, and sociocultural support. Through communicative and technology-enhanced strategies, educators can strengthen learners’ fluency, reduce speaking anxiety, and foster effective language acquisition.

Abstract

Cucumis melo L. from the family Cucurbitaceae is native to Southeast Asian countries, and very well-liked fruit due to its ginormous medicinal and nutritive value. The DCM extract of the powdered fruit sample of C. melo L. was subjected to different chromatographic techniques to isolate secondary metabolites. a-spinasterol, a-spinesteryl acetate, trilinolein and oleic acid were isolated and their structures were elucidated by comparing the data obtained from 1H NMR (400 MHz) and 13C NMR (100 MHz) spectra with reported data for corresponding compounds. The total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, total antioxidant capacity and DPPH radical scavenging activity were found to be the highest for methanolic extracts (14.25 ± 0.83 mg GAE/g, 9.2 ± 0.58 mg QE/g, 33.77 ± 1.58 mg AAE/g of dry extractives, and IC50 value of 11.13 µg/mL respectively) compared to n-hexane and DCM extracts.
