Abstract

Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of the penile gland and smegma smear, the expression of collagen and fibroblasts in the preputium, on post-circumcision wound healing. Material & Methods: A cross-sectional study conducted in Malang with samples obtained by purposive sampling on September 17, 2022. Inclusive criteria were uncircumcised males who agreed to be circumcised and had no contraindications to the procedure. Furthermore, the preputium obtained from the circumcision procedure was stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) and counted under an optical microscope. Post-circumcision evaluation was carried out seven days after the procedure. The data were analyzed using the regression method; p denotes the probability value or significance level, while the b score denotes the degree of influence. Results: There were total of 31 research samples that had a significant difference in the average age between the samples with post-circumcision complaints (11.25 ± 2.75) and those without complaints (8.5 ± 2.73) (p=0.05). The regression test found that bacterial culture, fibroblasts, and collagen had significant effects of 24%, 25%, and 24%, respectively. Conclusions: Skin elasticity decreases with age, as marked by increased fibroblasts and decreased collagen density. Fibroblast factors, collagen, and bacterial culture are significant in wound healing. Keywords: Circumcision, collagen, fibroblast, wound healing.

Abstract

Introduction. This research was conducted to investigate the association between urinary tract stones and the occurrence of urinary tract infections in patients receiving treatment at Saiful Anwar General Hospital in Malang.Methods. This research constitutes an analytical observational study employing a case-control research design conducted at Saiful Anwar General Hospital in Malang from 2015 to 2020.Results. This study comprised a sample size of 104 patients. In the group of patients with urinary tract stones, the highest occurrence was among men (77.3%), particularly those aged between 30-60 years (59.1%). In the group of patients with UTIs, males had the highest prevalence (67.3%), with a significant portion at the age of 50 (55.8%). The Chi-Square analysis investigating the association between urinary tract stones and the presence of urinary tract infections resulted in a p-value of 0.008, accompanied by an Odd Ratio of 4.566.Conclusions. A notable association has been identified between urinary tract stones and the presence of urinary tract infections.

Abstract

Background: Orchidectomy is a surgical androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer patients to achieve castrate testosterone levels. Selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) are used to mitigate the adverse effects of ADT, including elevated risk of osteoporosis, and reduced skeletal muscle mass. Rad140 is a novel SARMs that has high affinity for the androgen receptors. This study was conducted to determine the effects of SARM Rad140 on the number of osteoblasts, osteoclasts, muscle fiber cross-sectional area (CSA), muscle size, and number of myonuclei in rats underwent orchidectomy.Materials and Methods: An experimental study was conducted using a randomized post-test only control group design. Following orchidectomy, SARM Rad140 was administered orally for six weeks at various doses. Osteoblasts, osteoclasts, muscle fiber CSA, muscle size, and number of myonuclei were measured. Quantitative analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA.Results: There were significant differences in the effects of SARM Rad140 at different doses on osteoblast and osteoclast cells. At higher doses, the osteoblast cell counts in rats tended to increase, while the osteoclast counts tended to decline. The treatment group also showed significant results in the CSA of the gastrocnemius muscle fibers, as well as in the number of myonuclei of the gastrocnemius muscle.Conclusion: SARM Rad140 significantly increased the number of osteoblasts, muscle fiber CSA, and gastrocnemius muscle myonuclei, while decreasing osteoclasts. SARM Rad140 is a promising therapy for osteoporosis and muscle weakening due to ADT.Keywords: SARM Rad140, orchidectomy, osteoblasts, osteoclasts, muscle fiber cross sectional area, myonuclei

Abstract

BACKGROUND Selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) have been investigated as a potential treatment for hypogonadism, a condition characterized by low testosterone levels in men. The idea is to provide therapeutic benefits similar to traditional testosterone replacement therapy. However, research in this area is still in its early stages, and more extensive studies are needed to establish the efficacy of SARM. This study aimed to determine the impact of SARM RAD140 on testosterone levels, fibromuscular stroma, and prostate mass in rats undergoing bilateral orchidectomy. METHODS This was an in vivo study using posttest-only control group design in rats (Rattus norvegicus). The positive and negative control groups consisted of rats with and without bilateral orchidectomy, respectively. The treatment groups were rats given SARM RAD140 with and without orchidectomy. Testosterone levels, histopathology, and prostate mass were examined at the end of week 6, and the quantitative data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. RESULTS This study found no difference in prostate mass (0.598 [0.05] g versus 0.590 [0.07] g, p = 0.984), fibromuscular stroma ratio (0.483 [0.094] versus 0.463 [0.057], p = 0.984), and testosterone level (0.006 [0.005] ng/dl versus 0.014 [0.004] ng/dl, p = 0.098) compared to positive control with orchidectomy and SARM RAD140 administration 6 weeks after treatment. CONCLUSIONS There were no differences in testosterone levels, prostate mass, or the ratio of fibromuscular stroma to epithelium area in rats undergoing bilateral orchidectomy and placebo surgery with the administration of SARM RAD140.
