Abstract

As one of Indonesia's underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost regions, Aru Regency faces significant challenges in providing quality English education, primarily due to a shortage of qualified English teachers. This shortage has resulted in students having limited exposure to the English language, particularly in foundational aspects such as grammar. Recognizing this issue, the community development team initiated a program aimed at improving students’ grammar proficiency, with a specific focus on the simple present tense. To achieve this, the team implemented the EGRA (Experience, Generalization, Reinforcement, Application) technique, a structured approach designed to enhance both understanding and application of grammar in a systematic manner.  The community development program was conducted at SMP Jeljakaka, involving a class of 30 students. At the outset, a pre-test was administered to assess the students' baseline understanding of grammar. The results revealed that the majority of students had not yet mastered fundamental grammatical structures, particularly the simple present tense. Following the intervention using the EGRA technique, the students were given a post-test to measure their progress. The results indicated a significant improvement in their understanding and application of the simple present tense. This demonstrated the effectiveness of the EGRA technique in addressing gaps in grammar mastery while also highlighting the importance of structured and interactive teaching methods in enhancing students' language skills in challenging educational contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the challenges encountered by sixth-semester students in the Microteaching class within the English Language Education Study Program at PSDKU Aru University. Microteaching, as a crucial component of teacher education, often exposes various difficulties faced by pre-service teachers. Key challenges identified in this study include nervousness, inadequate teaching knowledge, and barriers categorized into five major areas: procedural, psychological, managerial, instructional, and professional. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed to explore these challenges in depth, using questionnaires and interviews as the primary data collection instruments. The data were analyzed based on students' statements, allowing the researchers to capture detailed insights into their experiences. The findings reveal that most students struggle significantly across all five categories, highlighting gaps in both pedagogical skills and teaching confidence. These results provide a clearer understanding of the complexities students face during Microteaching and suggest the need for targeted interventions in teacher education programs. Enhancing instructional support and offering more practical training opportunities are recommended to better prepare students for real classroom settings. Overall, this study contributes valuable knowledge to the field of English teacher education, particularly in the context of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) instruction.

Abstract

The aim of this community service project is to investigate the implementation of the "Talk Dice Game" to improve the students' vocabulary skill in sentence construction in the fifth grade students of SD Kristen 1 Dobo which amounted to 28 students (Class VA). Although animals and body parts were previously introduced in English, students’ lexical knowledge was extended to four new categories: hobbies, food, family and jobs. Students played a game in which they rolled three dices to get a topic, a sentence starter, and the style of speaking; and then they each had to read the sentence they created in the style indicated by the third dice. The game promoted the technique of thinking on-the-spot, and also, created some rather surprising sentences. The findings were that not only did the game serve to promote vocabulary retention, it also enabled students to experiment with sentence-construction even with minimal training in grammar. The game supports the value of gamified, scaffolded language learning methods to early English instruction in an Indonesian primary school.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of early and sustained exposure to English-language music in the natural acquisition of English grammar among Indonesian learners with mixed-age backgrounds. It explores music as a primary source of comprehensible input in a context with limited formal instructional resources. A qualitative case study approach was employed, involving eleven participants from Ambon and Dobo, Indonesia, including the author, with ages ranging from 12 to adulthood. Data collection included analysis of participants' original social media captions , focusing on specific grammatical structures such as verb tense and article usage, and semi-structured interviews exploring their histories of music exposure. This approach provided a source of authentic, unprompted language data to complement self-reported experiences. All participants demonstrated a strong, intuitive command of English grammar in unprompted writing. This competence was unanimously attributed to long-term, intergenerational engagement with English music, which provided extensive, repetitive input that allowed for the internalization of grammatical patterns. The findings suggest that music can serve as a powerful, motivating, and accessible bridge for English grammar acquisition for learners of various ages, offering a model for informal language learning. Supporting the principles of Krashen's Input Hypothesis, this study highlights the potential of leveraging music as a key pedagogical tool to supplement formal language instruction.
