Abstract

The aims of this research were to improve students reading comprehension by using webtoon comic application as a reading material. The participant of the research were students in Professional Reading Class of English Education Study Program in the academic year 2023/2024. Collaborative Action Research was used as the method in this study. The data were collected from Test and Interview. The criteria of success were 70% of students reach 75 score. The result showed that there were 10% of students (2 students) got 90 score, 5% of students (1 students) got 85 scores, 15% of students got 80 scores (3 students), and 45% of students got 75 scores (9 students). All in all, 75% of students reached 75 scores as a minimal score. It means students reading comprehension are improved after the use of webtoon comic application as reading material. Students’ response towards the use of webtoon comic application in improving their reading comprehension are fun, enjoyable, interesting and engage their motivation in reading.

Abstract

Academic literacy, particularly the ability to write scientific papers, remains challenging for students at YPKM Christian High School in Ambon. Based on observations and interviews with the principal and Indonesian language teachers, students struggle to develop ideas into scientific writing. This Community Service aims to introduce scientific writing techniques to students and teachers. The activity was conducted on May 7, 2024, involving 11th-grade students and teachers from various subjects. The implementation method included three main sessions: introduction to basic concepts and structure of scientific papers, citation techniques, writing bibliographies, and practical article analysis. The evaluation was conducted through questionnaires distributed to all participants. The evaluation results showed a positive response from participants regarding the relevance of the material to their needs, with the highest appreciation for the discussion and Q&A aspects. Technical constraints included limited time for practical sessions, an overly large number of participants in one group, and unstable internet connections. Recommendations for similar activities in the future include limiting the number of participants per session, extending the duration of practice, and simplifying technical materials. The involvement of teachers in this program opens up opportunities for ongoing mentoring in the classroom learning process.

Abstract

This study aims to improve student's vocabulary mastery in the fifth grade of SD Negeri Wakarleli using pictures as visual media. The research was conducted as Classroom Action Research (CAR) in two cycles involving 20 students. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected using observation checklists and pre-tests/post-tests. The findings indicate a significant improvement in students' vocabulary acquisition through pictures, especially in fruits and occupations. The results show that in the second cycle, more students reached 'excellent' and 'very good' levels of vocabulary mastery compared to the first cycle. These results suggest that using pictures as teaching media improves vocabulary acquisition

Abstract

This study aims to improve the vocabulary acquisition of Grade 5 students at Wakarleli Primary School through the implementation of the Board Race Game. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design, involving 22 students, and was conducted in two cycles, each consisting of four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through observations, vocabulary tests (pre-test and post-test), and interviews to evaluate the effectiveness of the game in enhancing students' vocabulary mastery. Each cycle included four meetings where the Board Race Game was integrated into the learning activities. The results indicated a significant improvement in students' vocabulary acquisition, along with increased student engagement and motivation in the learning process. This study contributes to the development of more effective, interactive, and engaging vocabulary teaching strategies, while also addressing knowledge gaps regarding the use of game-based learning in language instruction

Abstract

This study examines the challenges encountered by sixth-semester students in the Microteaching class within the English Language Education Study Program at PSDKU Aru University. Microteaching, as a crucial component of teacher education, often exposes various difficulties faced by pre-service teachers. Key challenges identified in this study include nervousness, inadequate teaching knowledge, and barriers categorized into five major areas: procedural, psychological, managerial, instructional, and professional. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed to explore these challenges in depth, using questionnaires and interviews as the primary data collection instruments. The data were analyzed based on students' statements, allowing the researchers to capture detailed insights into their experiences. The findings reveal that most students struggle significantly across all five categories, highlighting gaps in both pedagogical skills and teaching confidence. These results provide a clearer understanding of the complexities students face during Microteaching and suggest the need for targeted interventions in teacher education programs. Enhancing instructional support and offering more practical training opportunities are recommended to better prepare students for real classroom settings. Overall, this study contributes valuable knowledge to the field of English teacher education, particularly in the context of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) instruction.

Abstract

Pengenalan Lapangan Persekolahan (PLP) merupakan program yang dirancang untuk memberikan mahasiswa kependidikan pengalaman langsung dalam lingkungan sekolah. PLP 1 difokuskan pada observasi ekosistem sekolah, termasuk manajemen, proses pembelajaran, serta interaksi antara guru dan siswa. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan ini mencakup observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Hasil observasi menunjukkan bahwa strategi pembelajaran yang diterapkan di SMP Negeri 15 Ambon cukup bervariasi, dengan pendekatan yang berpusat pada siswa. Selain itu, ditemukan tantangan seperti keterbatasan sarana dan prasarana yang dapat mempengaruhi efektivitas pembelajaran. Melalui PLP 1, mahasiswa memperoleh pemahaman mendalam tentang dinamika sekolah tanpa terlibat langsung dalam proses mengajar. Kegiatan ini menjadi landasan penting dalam membangun kompetensi pedagogik mahasiswa sebelum memasuki tahap praktik mengajar di PLP selanjutnya.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve the narrative writing skills of high school students through the use of the Toontastic 3D application as an interactive learning medium. The targets of the activity are grade X students at SMA Negeri 5 Ambon who have challenges in developing ideas and narrative writing structures. Theoretically, this activity is based on the constructivist learning approach and the theory of multiple intelligences, which emphasizes the importance of active student involvement and the use of media that suits visual and kinesthetic learning styles. Toontastic 3D, as an animation-based digital media, provides opportunities for students to creatively organize and develop storylines while strengthening their narrative cohesion and coherence. The method of activity implementation includes socialization, training on the use of the application, assistance in writing animation-based narratives, and reflection sessions. The evaluation was conducted through questionnaires that were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results of the questionnaire analysis from 30 respondents showed that 87% of students felt more motivated in writing after using Toontastic 3D, 83% stated that this media helped them in organizing the story structure (introduction, conflict, climax, and resolution), and 78% claimed to be more confident in expressing their ideas in writing. In addition, students reported that the visual and interactive learning experience made the writing process more enjoyable and meaningful. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the integration of interactive digital media such as Toontastic 3D is an effective approach to support the improvement of narrative writing literacy among secondary school students. This activity also encourages innovation in Indonesian language learning through the use of technology that suits the characteristics of the digital generation.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberikan informasi dan pengetahuan tambahan tentang pentingnya menjadi guru yang inovatif dan kreatif di era digitalisasi sekarang ini bagi guru sekolah dasar. Seminar ini dilatarbelakangi oleh tuntutan zaman dimana para siswa sekolah dasar memiliki aktifitas sehari hari-hari dalam menggunakan smartphone dalam bermain game maupun aktifitas lainnya. Disamping rasa bosan yang menjadi karakteristik dari siswa SD sehingga guru dituntut untuk lebih kreatif dalam mengembangkan materi mengajar yang inovatif maupun implementasikannya dalam proses mengajar di kelas dengan menggunakan IT dalam mengatasi masalah ini. Metode yang digunakan dalam pelatihan ini meliputi ceramah, diskusi interaktif. Aktifitas ini diikuti oleh 8 orang guru pada Sekolah Dasar Negeri 4 Halong, Kota Ambon. Hasil dari seminar ini menunjukan adanya kesadaran peserta terhadap pentingnya menjadi guru yang inovatif dan kreatif dalam mengembangkan bahan mengajar maupun pada proses belajar mengajar di kelas. Disamping itu berbagai pertanyaan kritis yang diberikan peserta selama diskusi berlangsung menggambarkan pemahaman peserta yang lebih baik tentang topik seminar. Kesimpulan dari kegiatan ini adalah bahwa seminar menyangkut menjadi guru yang profesional melalui implementasi digitalisasi dalam aspek pendidikan sangat dibutuhkan oleh guru.

Abstract

Debat Bahasa Inggris merupakan salah satu metode pembelajaran yang penting dan menjadi bagian dari kebutuhan sekolah dalam meningkatkan sumber daya manusia teristimewa ketrampilan komunikasi global. Untuk menjawab kebutuhan sekolah, pelatihan ini diinisiasi dan dilakukan oleh tim pengabdian dari Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, Universitas Pattimura. Peserta pelatihan yakni para guru Bahasa Inggris SMA/SMK se-kabupaten Seram Bagian Barat, Provinsi Maluku. Tujuan pelatihan ini untuk memberikan pemahaman yang komprehensif mengenai pentingnya kegiatan debat Bahasa Inggris melalui paparan sistem debat pada kompetisi debat Bahasa Inggris tingkat SMA/SMK secara lokal, regional, nasional maupun internasional. Pemahaman ini untuk ditandaklanjuti di sekolah dalam meningkatkan kemampuan keahlian berbicara dan berpikir kritis analitik bagi siswa dan guru sebagai pengajar sekaligus berpotensi membina dan melatih siswa untuk kemampuan dimaksud. Metode pelaksanaan dalam pelatihan ini meliputi tahapan persiapan, pembekalan dan keberlanjutan kegiatan. Pelaksanaan kegiatan dilakukan secara daring melalui aplikasi zoom dalam bentuk pemaparan pemahaman secara teoritis untuk selanjutnya tahapan keberlanjutan kegiatan dalam pendampingan dan pelatihan langsung secara luring kepada para guru. Hasil dari pelatihan ini yakni para guru memiliki pengetahuan yang mendalam mengenai debat Bahasa Inggris dan rekomendasi untuk pelatihan penguatan secra luring kepada para guru Bahasa Inggris sekolah tingkat SMA/SMK se-Kabupaten Seram Bagian Barat.
