Abstract

The largest organ in the human body, the epidermis, serves as the primary barrier against environmental factors that may arise from the outside. Xerosis cutis is a skin condition that causes dry skin. It's caused by a number of things, including the activity of sebaceous and sweat glands decreasing with age, which lowers the amount of water in the stratum corneum and causes moisture loss. This can lead to disturbances in daily activities and a decline in sleep quality. In France, mild to moderate-severe dry skin is prevalent at a rate of 55.65%, while its prevalence is 9%. At Hana Nursing Home, sixty people attended the geriatric population screening activity, with a mean age of 78 years. During this activity, the left hand demonstrated an average water and oil content of 36.6% and 16.4%, respectively. In contrast, the right hand displayed an average water and oil content of 33.7% and 15.1%, respectively. The aim of this activity is to enhance participants' understanding of the significance of maintaining an optimal level of hydration in their epidermis.

Abstract

The skin, as the body's largest organ, can function as an important barrier against dangers from outside the body. Insufficient water and oil levels in the skin can cause dry skin conditions. This can be caused by various factors, including age, sun exposure, and accompanying chronic diseases. Dry skin tends to cause itching, thereby increasing the risk of scratching and injury. A good level of skin hydration will improve an individual's quality of life. This screening activity for the adult population at Kalam Kudus Middle School was attended by 127 participants with an average age of 39 years. The mean water and oil content in the left hand were 39.3% and 17.6%, respectively. Meanwhile, the average water and oil content in the right hand was 41.2% and 18.5%, respectively. Through this activity, participants are expected to increase awareness of the importance of maintaining body and skin moisture.

Abstract

The skin, the largest organ in the human body, provides protection against the external environment by covering the entire exterior surface of the body. Dermatoporosis is a skin fragility syndrome that develops as time progresses. Extrinsic and intrinsic factors contribute to skin aging, whereas extrinsic factors comprise nutrition, smoking, ionizing radiation, and solar exposure. In the elderly, the incidence of dermatoporosis is higher. In Europe, the incidence of dermatoporosis varies between 30 and 37%. Dermatoporosis is distinguished by the presence of slender, fragile, and shredded skin. This renders elderly individuals susceptible to complications related to hemorrhaging and infections, thereby exerting a detrimental influence on their overall health and well-being. It is anticipated that by engaging in this exercise, participants will develop a greater understanding of the significance of skin health maintenance.

Abstract

The levels of hydration, oil, and air in the skin are important aspects referring to the air content in cells and play a role in skin moisture so that it looks smooth and elastic. Low levels of hydration, oil, and air in the skin can damage the skin barrier which functions as a physical permeability barrier that is useful for protecting the body from the external environment and low levels of hydration are also indicators of systemic disorders. This activity was carried out in Krendang, a densely populated urban area in Jakarta, with the aim of screening for dry skin by examining the levels of air, oil, and skin hydration. This activity was attended by 131 adult participants. The Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) method was applied, where the levels of air, oil, and skin hydration were measured, and educational materials were provided regarding dry skin and its risk factors. In this activity, the average oil levels in the right and left hands were 26.9% and 27% respectively, the water levels in the right and left hands were 54.25% and 54.69% respectively. Through this activity, participants are expected to increase awareness of the importance of optimal skin hydration status.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight poses a risk of triggering premature aging and skin cancer. Adolescence is a critical period for establishing photoprotection habits due to the high accumulation of sun exposure at this age, including the use of sunscreen. To determine the level and relationship between knowledge regarding the dangers of sun exposure and compliance with sunscreen use among students at Santo Yoseph High School, Jakarta. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 170 students at Santo Yoseph High School, Jakarta, to evaluate the correlation between the level of knowledge regarding the dangers of sun exposure and compliance with daily sunscreen use using questionnaires for each research parameter. Questionnaire responses were scored as correct or incorrect numerically, and the total score per subject was calculated. The final results were categorized into good and poor knowledge and compliance. The majority of students (61.7%) demonstrated good knowledge about the dangers of sun exposure; however, compliance with daily sunscreen use was lower (50.6% non-compliant), confirming a knowledge-behavior gap phenomenon. Gender analysis indicated that female adolescents with good knowledge were 3.063 times more likely to be compliant with sunscreen use. Conversely, no significant correlation was found among male students. A knowledge-behavior gap phenomenon between knowledge of the dangers of sun exposure and compliance with sunscreen use was observed, particularly among male students at Santo Yoseph High School, Jakarta. Meanwhile, knowledge served as a strong predictor of compliance only in female adolescents. School-based health education should be tailored by gender, focusing on long-term medical risks for females, and addressing the elimination of social stigma along with recommending comfortable product formulations for males. Keywords: Sunscreen, Knowledge, Compliance, Adolescents, Gender.
