Abstract

The impact of nutritional status on cognitive function, academic achievement and performance, and overall productivity is substantial. Adequate nutritional status safeguards society against the detrimental effects of malnutrition, thereby preserving the collective national welfare in addition to enhancing individual well-being. The Plan-Do-Check-Action (PDCA) method is implemented by this service. The screening process entails the collection of anthropometric data, including weight, height, and body mass index. The expeditious implementation of community-based initiatives that detect nutritional disorders in their early stages can effectively mitigate the detrimental effects of malnutrition on the health of children. It is critical to incorporate a comprehensive approach that tackles determinants including socio-economic factors and promotes healthy eating practices in order to effectively combat malnutrition and facilitate optimal growth and development.

Abstract

The largest organ in the human body, the epidermis, serves as the primary barrier against environmental factors that may arise from the outside. Xerosis cutis is a skin condition that causes dry skin. It's caused by a number of things, including the activity of sebaceous and sweat glands decreasing with age, which lowers the amount of water in the stratum corneum and causes moisture loss. This can lead to disturbances in daily activities and a decline in sleep quality. In France, mild to moderate-severe dry skin is prevalent at a rate of 55.65%, while its prevalence is 9%. At Hana Nursing Home, sixty people attended the geriatric population screening activity, with a mean age of 78 years. During this activity, the left hand demonstrated an average water and oil content of 36.6% and 16.4%, respectively. In contrast, the right hand displayed an average water and oil content of 33.7% and 15.1%, respectively. The aim of this activity is to enhance participants' understanding of the significance of maintaining an optimal level of hydration in their epidermis.

Abstract

Viral evolution is a subdiscipline of evolutionary biology and virology that focuses on the evolution of viruses. Many viruses, especially RNA viruses, have relatively high mutation rates and short production durations (on the order of one point mutation or more per genome per round of replication). The rapid pace of viral mutation paired with natural selection enables viruses to rapidly adapt to changes in the host environment, despite the fact that the majority of viral mutations offer little benefit and frequently prove to be harmful. Additionally, because viruses often make several copies in an infected host, altered genes can be rapidly transmitted to a large number of offspring. The high mutation rates of RNA viruses, which are the result of an error-prone RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, make them a veritable gold mine for researchers interested in discovering evolutionary novelty and developing new methods to study evolution in action. There are two different forms of genetic changes: antigenic drift and antigenic shift. This article covers briefly the evolution of viruses in terms of genetic variation.

Abstract

Obesity is a condition where a person has an exceeds body weight than normal limit due to accumulation of excess fat in the body. Obesity closely related to insulin resistance, which is a condition where the body cannot respond to insulin effectively. Therefore, education and routine screening for the elderly in order to detect and manage insulin resistance at an early stage is very important. This service activity is carried out using the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) method, which includes education about healthy eating patterns, physical activity and weight management, as well as screening insulin levels. Based on these activities, education and screening have proven important in preventing further complications and improving the quality of life of the elderly.

Abstract

Sarcopenia is a progressive degenerative condition characterized by a decrease in muscle mass, strength, and musculoskeletal function, affecting the quality of life of the elderly. This activity aims to screen for vitamin D and educate the elderly about sarcopenia. Community service activities were carried out in nursing homes, involving education and screening of vitamin D levels. The results showed that the majority of respondents were women (79.6%) with an average age of 74.05 years. Most respondents experienced vitamin D deficiency, with 87.1% deficient, 3.2% adequate, and only 9.7% having good levels, with it being found that more women experienced vitamin D deficiency than men. Education regarding the importance of vitamin D and preventing sarcopenia is provided through outreach sessions and poster media. This activity emphasizes the importance of early detection and comprehensive intervention including physical exercise, proper nutritional intake, and lifestyle modification to prevent sarcopenia and improve the quality of life of the elderly. Community-based interventions are needed to address vitamin D deficiency and promote musculoskeletal health in the aging population.

Abstract

Nutritional status has a significant impact on the growth and development of children. In Indonesia, the prevalence of nutritional status is as follows: 4% (very thin), 7.2% (thin), 10.8% (overweight), and 8% (obese), as determined by body mass index/age. This can be affected by a variety of variables, including socioeconomic status, personal hygiene, and lifestyle. In the odd semester of 2024, Panyaweuyan Elementary School is populated by 285 students in total. The objective of this service endeavor is to conduct early nutritional status screenings for pupils and girls attending Panyaweuyan Elementary School. By assessing the nutritional status of children through anthropometric measurements such as height, weight, and body mass index, this service activity is developed utilizing the PDCA method. The findings from the assessments indicate that while the majority of pupils enrolled at Panyaweuyan Elementary School possess a healthy nutritional status, a subset remains obese and has a compromised nutritional status. Early detection is critical for preventing and treating nutritional issues in children so that they may develop to their full potential.

Abstract

Depression is a common mental disorder in the elderly, associated with emotional distress, increased health care costs, the risk of suicide, and death from other causes. Depression in the elderly is characterised by persistent sadness, helplessness, anhedonia, changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, psychomotor retardation or agitation, fatigue, impaired concentration, and suicidal ideation. Prevalence varies between 7 and 30%, higher in women. Risk factors include bereavement, social isolation, and somatic diseases, which are more common in old age. Depression increases the risk of dementia, morbidity, and mortality, emphasising the need for early screening. This activity uses the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) method to screen for depression in 61 elderly participants at the Hana Nursing Home using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) questionnaire. The examination results revealed mild, moderate, and severe depression in 8 people (13.11%), 4 people (6.56%), and 2 people (3.28%), respectively. Early detection using GDS is essential for timely intervention, including counselling and medical advice, to improve quality of life and reduce depression-related morbidity and mortality in the elderly population.

Abstract

Healthy skin is a condition in which the skin’s moisture, oil levels, and elasticity are optimally maintained, allowing it to protect the body from external factors and maintain its physiological balance. The balance of water, oil, and skin hydration is especially important for adolescents undergoing hormonal changes. The purpose of this activity is to enhance adolescents' awareness and understanding of the importance of healthy skin through education and assessments of some of the skin contents. This community service activity was organized using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) method, which includes health education and assessments of skin water, oil, and hydration levels among adolescent groups. The results of this activity indicate that screening and education contribute to adolescents’ understanding of the risk factors affecting skin health, the importance of appropriate skincare, and the benefits of regular assessments. The activity's discussion highlights that balanced levels of water, oil, and skin hydration play a role in preventing skin issues such as infections, acne, dermatitis, and premature aging. This education supports adolescents in adopting healthy habits to maintain their skin health. This activity plays a crucial role in raising adolescents' awareness of skin health, thereby reducing the risk of future skin disorders.

Abstract

Normal Weight Obesity (NWO) is a condition in which an individual has a normal weight but a high body fat percentage, increasing the risk of metabolic diseases. Early detection through body composition assessments is essential to prevent health complications in individuals with normal weight but imbalanced body composition. Activities include health education, body composition assessments, and the implementation of preventive measures through healthy lifestyle changes. Assessment results indicate that some individuals have a high body fat proportion despite having a normal weight range. The education provided enhances participants' understanding of NWO risks and the importance of balanced body composition to maintain metabolic health. Body composition assessments in the productive age group enable early detection of body component imbalances not visible through weight alone. Preventive measures such as balanced nutrition and regular physical activity play a significant role in maintaining a healthy body composition and reducing the risk of NWO. Body composition assessment is an effective preventive strategy to detect NWO and promote a healthy lifestyle in the productive age group.

Abstract

Metabolic syndrome is health condition that include hypertension, hyperglycemia, central obesity, and dyslipidemia, which significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Blood pressure is one of the main components of metabolic syndrome, where elevated blood pressure serves as an early indicator of serious risk for complications. Routine blood pressure screening in the adult population plays a critical role in the early detection of hypertension and in preventing the progression of metabolic syndrome. This activity aims to raise awareness and understanding among adults about the risks of hypertension and the importance of blood pressure control through routine screening and education on healthy lifestyles. The results show that periodic blood pressure screening is effective in identifying individuals with early-stage hypertension, enabling timely preventive interventions. The education provided successfully enhanced participants' understanding of healthy lifestyles as a preventive measure against hypertension and metabolic syndrome. The conclusion of this activity underscores that blood pressure screening in the adult population is a strategic measure to reduce the risk of complications from metabolic syndrome and hypertension.
