Abstract

Youth is the backbone and the next generation that brings new vision, spirit, and energy in carrying out the mission of the church. However, in church life, youth often face challenges of inactivity in worship and service. The congregation of GMIH Maladom in Porniti Village, Central Jailolo, West Halmahera, North Maluku, also faces this problem. This study aims to analyze the pastor's role as a motivator of youth activeness in worship in terms of transformational leadership. The research used qualitative-descriptive method with observation and interview techniques. The selection of sources was carried out using purposive sampling technique and the research data was analyzed using phenomenological analysis techniques. The results showed that the pastor's leadership in GMIH Maladom congregation can be identified as transformational leadership. Pastors motivate youth by providing vision, creating personal closeness, providing spiritual guidance, giving responsibility, and giving appreciation. This leadership results in positive changes in youth participation in church worship and service. The findings suggest that pastors with a transformational leadership approach can be effective motivators in mobilizing youth to be active in the church.

Abstract

Women in a patriarchal culture are always required to be submissive, obedient, and silent. Therefore, when women become victims of forced marriage (kawin tangkap) that lead to sexual violence, their voices are silenced as a form of submission and obedience, as experienced by Tamar in the book of 2 Samuel 13:1-22. The purpose of this study is to describe Tamar’s experience as a victim of “forced marriage” by her own brother, Amnon. The research method used is qualitative with a feminist postcolonial hermeneutic study. This approach brings back the experiences of women who have been ignored or silenced to be heard or voiced again. Using Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s theory of subaltern, my main argument is that Tamar’s experience as a victim of forced marriage was silenced because of the interests and purpose of men, namely Amnon and Absalom. The result shows that Tamar was able to speak out about her experience, but her voice was silenced, not only because of the patriarchal culture that was so strong in the community but also because of the political interests in it, namely the power struggle between Amnon and Absalom. The conclusion of this research is that the silencing of women’s voices and experiences, namely Tamar as a victim, is the result of a patriarchal culture.

Abstract

Religious practices in society are often understood in a limited sense within formal spaces, doctrines, or specific institutions, which can lead to stigmatization and intervention in local cultural expressions and beliefs. This study aims to demonstrate that Osong functions not only as part of a cultural tradition but also embodies religious practices that transcend the boundaries of formal and institutionalized religion. This research employs ethnographic methods to gain an in-depth understanding of social and religious practices in daily life, particularly in the context of Osong. The findings reveal that the Osong song in the Rambu solo’ ritual contains various dimensions of lived religion, such as spirituality, embodiment, materiality, aesthetics, emotion, morality, and narrative. Each of these dimensions not only highlights the community’s relationship with the transcendent but also strengthens social solidarity and the cultural identity of the Toraja people in facing the realities of death and social changes in their environment. These findings affirm that religious practices lived by the community are not always dependent on formal institutions but can manifest in local cultural spaces that are alive and evolving within the community.
