This research aimed to know the students’ writing a portfolio before and after being taught and to determine whether using a portfolio significantly affected their writing English skills. The research is a pre-experimental study. The population is the students of the ELT department, and the sample is 27 students who took a writing class. The instrument of this study is a writing rubric. The scores were analyzed using a t-test. The finding shows that the t-test score is 4.540, meaning the t-score is ≥ 1.729 (4.540 < -1.729). Therefore, it can be concluded that the null hypothesis is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. It can be shown that a writing portfolio can help learners increase their writing English skills.

Abstract

Storytelling is an engaging activity that benefits both the audience and the storyteller. Through storytelling, students practice pronunciation, intonation, expression, gestures, and grammatical accuracy, while audiences develop their listening comprehension and gain new knowledge. To facilitate storytelling activities and strengthen students’ English proficiency, MGMP Bahasa Inggris and MKKS SMP Negeri Kabupaten Situbondo organized an English Storytelling Contest as part of the Englishphoria event. The contest featured participants from public junior high schools across the region. A key component of this program was the enhancement of the storytelling assessment rubric. The rubric was collaboratively developed and adapted from international standards (CEFR and Cambridge English), aiming to ensure a more objective, fair, and comprehensive evaluation of students’ performances. The event ran smoothly and demonstrated the importance of clear assessment criteria in educational competitions. It is expected that similar events and rubric-based assessments will continue to support English language learning and encourage daily English use among students in Situbondo.

Abstract

Since vocabulary has the important role when learning English, it is better for the English learners to have sufficient vocabulary before learning the four English skills. However, the students’ vocabulary tends to be low because of the less interesting media for learning. Therefore, the present study aimed to find out the effect of pop-up book on students’ vocabulary mastery at Language Boarding House. Students must grasp their vocabulary in order to learn the entire language. Put another way, children find it easier to communicate when they have a larger vocabulary. The pre-experimental one group pre-test and post-test were created by the researcher using a quantitative approach. Twenty-six intermediate-level students made up the study's sample. To gather data, the researcher employed pre- and post-tests. The results of the study demonstrated that using pop-up books significantly improved pupils' vocabulary mastery. The paired sample t-test calculation result indicated that the sig. (2-tailed) value was less than 0.05. It indicates that pupils' vocabulary mastery is improved by pop-up books.
